I think my songs are so strongly layered with imagery in themselves that they don’t need to be defined by visual imagery too much.
I’m moved by things that change. Life itself in this country is changing so quickly that the issues change constantly. Basically, all I can say is when something affects me deeply enough that I write a song about it.
I think at some point you have to decide how much the art means and how much making a living means. I think all of us have to struggle with that. The purest response, in my own experience, has been to follow your own heart and do what you really believe.
The people who come to me are the people who are meant to come to me.
On Georgia O’Keefe… The grandeur of this old woman and how long her life had spanned and the commitment she had to her art and to the wild places and living her life dedicated to the spirit and to her art - in many ways that's how I relate to my own existence.
