Dan, I've been an avid admirer of yours since I first saw you on stage in the
70's when I was a student at Mississippi State. Back then, it was just you, sitting in a bentwood chair with your guitar (I still have the picture) and I remember being absolutely blown away by your music. I have since seen you many times in Mississippi over the years. You are not just an artist, you are a poet whose verse and music transcend time and remain as fresh and spiritual as the first time I heard it. You still blow me away. Thank you for your gift of music. It leaves me breathless. Take care of yourself. Be well. God bless you. ~ Melanie
We have never met, but I feel like you are an old friend of mine. I've seen
you in concert 8 times, which is more than any other artist I've seen, over
a span of more than 20 years. You were at college with me in the 1970's;
when I had a baby in 1976; throwing pottery many times over the years, and now
in my 50's as I write this note. I can't tell you how much I enjoy and will
continue to enjoy your heart and energy that come through your music. Thank
you so much. I've meant to write for years and was glad to find this website.
Best wishes with your illness. I know many souls send you love, as I do. Love ~ Anita Vasquez
Dear Dan,
I've just visited your website for the first time and learned of the battle you are facing. God bless you. Today I pulled out some old cassette tapes from college (I'm 45 now) and put your music (Phoenix, Twin Sons..., and Captured Angel) on the player at full blast all afternoon while I did stuff at home. It had been years since I had enjoyed being lost in music and memories in this manner--for you see, I am a professional church musician, and I "work" with music constantly; so, often time at home is just plain time to be quiet--but not today. I immediately got on the web and ordered 4 of your old albums in a more permanent CD format, because I know that these tapes are on their last leg.
Anyway, today I felt very young again and like I was flying on the wings of song--so to speak. I have my DMA in vocal performance and just let loose today with your music. I haven't enjoyed anything as much in eons! I have always so highly respected you and your marvelous abilities--all the instruments, the singing, and the writing. Your music is like nothing else. Your talent is like nothing else and noone else's either. THANK YOU FOR THE JOY. --Anne
Hi Dan,
I just came across your website today.
I had to take this moment to let you know that you and your family and friends are in my prayers! You have always been in my thoughts and your music in my heart and cd player! (and turntable years ago). I first saw you at the Auditorium Theatre in downtown Chicago when I was a teenager. I have been to at least 10 or 12 of your concerts over the years most recently in Rosemont, IL at the Rosemont Theatre. I’m probably not unique in my love for you and your music as I know many are, but when anyone asks who is my favorite? It is always you! I am currently not working in the capacity of a nurse for the past 4 years or so but at heart I am still a nurse. My background included 6 yrs of Oncology nursing out of the past 20 yrs. Probably the most profound years of my life, A truly special privilege!!! My heart goes out to you and your loved ones. I first heard of your battle with cancer on the radio briefly a couple years ago I think and it struck me very hard.
I just want to take this moment to thank you for touching my life with your music!!!
I will continue to pray for you! God Bless You Dan! Warmly ~ Donna (from Cary, IL)
Just wondering how you are doing. Maybe you could post some new news to set my mind at ease. Prayers with you and your family. Still loving your music. ~ Donna Pennington
Dan, May God bless you as you have blessed all of us with your music. I have
many of your CD's, but I mostly listen to your Portrait collection. I enjoy it
immensely. When I first got it years ago I listened to the Hits and Rock n Roll
CD's, now I listen to the Ballads and Tales CD's. I must be getting older.
Whether you ever record or tour again or not your music will go on and on. Keep
up the fight. With love ~ Brad
Dear Mr. Fogelberg,
I was so sorry to hear just today of your illness. I think I can say
without contradiction that you have many, many friends in my home state
of Kentucky. We'll all be praying for you and your family.
Run for the Roses ~

Dan, In 1980 a man sang to me "...I am in love with you" from "Longer" (apparently, he didn't really
mean it), but I have been listening to your music ever since. It is always fresh to me. When you
played in Austin in the 1980s, my sister and I took my young nephew to see you. Recently, a friend
asked me to find a song to share with her dad so I gave her, "Leader of the Band". Being a writer, I
appreciate your sharing your heart. Wishing you the best as you navigate this unbearably
challenging time in your life. Best wishes ~ Cindee Segal
Your music has brought tears to my eyes since I first listenend in the late
70's. It was not because of sadness, more because of the beauty. I lived for a while in Estes Park, Colorado, and spent every day climbing in the Rockies. When I first heard Nether Lands, I was sure that was where you were, and drove down there several times hoping to run into you. I just knew we would have an instant connection. The closest I ever got was right up front at Red Rocks. That's okay, though, because the physical closeness pales in comparison to the internal closeness we have. I'm knocking on wood for you every time I think of you. I love you. ~
Geri from Melbourne Florida
Dan...God bless you for the soul communicated in your music. Music can be
transcendent, and your music is that in spades. I'll meet you in the next...but continue in this world, in this life, for years to come. Your contribution to
the lives of those who love you and what you've shared is something to rest
in! ~
Ed Artigue in L.A.
Dan -
I "discovered" - or rather -- I was introduced to you in 1977 in Okinawa
by a fellow Marine. We military folks
had a tendency toward buying big stereos. Usually because there would
be 16-20 of us in one room, all listening
to our own music - competing as at a multi-stage festival (a la "Memphis
in May"), with just as much variety in
the music. I tended toward country and classic rock - still do. But
hearing that album (Nether Lands) was a pure
epiphany for me. I am a drummer, and I keep trying to learn guitar (one
day I will). That day at liberty, I went out
and bought all three of your earlier albums. I've been a fan of yours
ever since.
When I was growing up, learning everything was what I wanted to do.
It's clear that you follow that same philosophy. Your paintings, poetry, compositions and playing all speak to this. I
do all of these things - but, I don't unfortunately
have your writing talent, though I am a decent drummer, and I sing
reasonably well - many of your songs in fact.
Get better - the world
needs your beautiful music. Best regards ~
Martin Michaels
Dan and family, As a family battling this disease {myself in '04 and
now my brother} I too can't stress enough the importance of PSA and
DRE tests . I've always been a fan but more importantly you're in my
thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. ~ Terry
O'Brien, Saratoga,
N.Y.
Dan, I'm a big fan and have been since the first album. Thanks for
touching my life so many times over the years. Best of luck with your
recovery. When you're back on tour, I'll be there to celebrate with
you. ~
John A.
Hello Dan,
First and foremost, I am very sorry to learn of your illness. You are in my thoughts and I wish you comfort and peace.
My name is Kim (47); wife, mother, nurse, and one of a trio that sings traditional songs from the Balkan region. I'm from 'downeast' Maine; Hancock Co. area. I have enjoyed your creations throughout my adulthood.
I was introduced to your music from a movie I watched, I think in 1980, where a disc jockey played, "There's a Place in the World for a Gambler." I was hooked from then on and made a collection of the albums you had out. I have to say I was very taken by your beautiful eyes and looks in general. I saw you in concert once too, in Portland, ME. You have a wonderful talent and I thank you for sharing it with the world.
My Best to You and Yours ~ Kim
Dan, I pray that you are doing well. You are in my thoughts daily. Your music
has been such a large part of my life for 30 plus years now. My kids grew up
with your music as part of many things we did as a family. When they hear your
music now, it usually takes them back to a great memory and time. I hope to one
day see you perform again if that is your will and God's. Thanks so much for
your wonderful gift of music, it as blessed me beyond measure. ~ Bill Burke,
Colorado.
Missing you...Good song, correct sentiment.
Your music will last lifetimes. You've been in our thoughts & prayers since learning of your misfortune.
Dan,
Just wanted to send well wishes and prayers for a
speedy recovery in your battle with cancer. Your music
is, in a sense of a timeline, before my time. But
thanks to my parents listening to your tapes and the
airplay on the soft rock stations, I've grown up on
your songs through my parents. I know you've heard it
all when it comes to all the positive speeches that
people give about beating cancer. I've never had
cancer but I have had family with cancer, a few beat
it and a few didn't. But from what I can tell you is,
my relatives that did beat it, didn't give up and the
ones that succumbed to it just accepted it and
eventually it overcame them. The power of faith in God
and faith that everything is everything and everything
will be all right because you have the love of God, the
love of your family and the love of your fans. Hang in
there, this will make you stronger and you'll be up
and around in no time. And your legacy and your music
will live on forever...
Best Wishes from Lancaster, Ca.. How I wish we could once again see you perform
live -- you, Russ Kunkel, Jerry Douglas....the High Country Snows concert at the
Universal Amphitheatre was the very first LIVE performance I had ever been
to....and Dan, you're still the best... ~ Jeff Cooper
Dan , You've been one of the most powerful musical and creative influences
in my life , and in the 30 odd years I've been in the music industry you are
among the very few artists I find myself returning to for inspiration again
and again. Your body of musical work speaks for itself I think , but I'd
just like to say I consider you one of the most important writers and
musicians ever to come from these American shores . When I see a Bald Eagle
on occasion on my morning walk I think of you and what you stand for and it
gives me hope for the future . God bless and keep you and yours! -A
brother musician in Nashville - We love you Dan! ~ William in music city
Just thinking about you today, Dan--hoping you are doing well. Your
music means so much to me today as it did back in high school. Thank you
for a great thirty years of glorious music. May it continue for many years
to come----fight the good fight... ~ Greg from
Milwaukee
I remember as a 12 year old, my sister bringing home this new album
she got called "Nether Lands". Who was this man, Dan Fogelberg?? Well, I fell in love. I was soooo before my time!!! haha Needless
to say, i was not the most popular girl at school as everyone else was
listening to REO Speedwagon and Journey. But Dan, you changed my
life!! I traveled every two years from Page, Arizona to Phoenix to see you
with my sister. It was the time for us to let our hair down and
scream like teenagers. Now, as a 43 year old woman, I have made my daughter grow up with
you. Her fave is "Tell Me To My Face" from Twin Sons. Music is so much
a part of our family and Dan, you have been a part of our family for
almost 30 years. Wow, even I feel old. Our family prays for you and your family. Thank you for sharing your
gifts with us.
Thanks and have a great day! ~
Laura Permenter
Dear Dan and Family,
I just wanted to let you know that I think of you so much. I visit
your web site periodically to check up on you. Haven't heard much from
you lately but I'm hoping that things are going well for you. With all
the good wishes and love coming your way from all your fans your health
will be restored. I believe in my heart that you will beat this thing.
Your music has reached the depths of my soul and I've been listening to
you since I was in my very early 20's and now I'm in my very early 50's!
(In my mind I'm still that 20 year old). Anyway, God bless you and
your family and Dan know that you are very much loved.
Hugs ~
Denise
Your music always has spoken to my heart and made me visualize what you were
singing before music videos. I love your acoustic music from the 70's and
80's. You had that long hair and beard and I just thought 'he is so handsome
I want a man like him'. This weekend I played your music only on my new Ipod
and I slept to the soothing sounds of Home Free and Captured Angel. I call
myself a captured angel because I can't fly here in the city or feel
connected to this ugly city of LA. I long to be in the mountains or on the
beach with a man who loves your music and likes to play it too. I am so
sorry to google you and find out that you have cancer. You speak to my soul.
You are also a painter like me. I've related mostly
to your early music up to The Innocent Age and Phoenix and I loved the
bluegrass album. Please know that you have had a very deep impact on my life
and always will.
You are my favorite artist of all. I'm partial to the acoustic ballads
rather than the rock. I wish you were healthy. I know in heaven your music
will be there for me because I can't be without it. I thank you for playing
beautiful music and I hope your health improves.
Always ~
Kay of Glendale,CA
I just want to say thanks for all your songs that have so many meanings for
me. As with you, I grew up in Peoria and went thru many feelings about the
place. thanks again for you songs. Good luck ~ Jean Bennett
Dear Dan & Family-
First and most importantly, I hope that you are feeling well and recovering. If the love and caring of a lot of people makes a difference, you've got a lot going in your favor. I just want to add my hopes and wishes that you'll recover completely, and that life is good for you and yours in the meanwhile. I'm an old man of 54 and have listened to your music so long that I feel like it's part of my DNA now. The older I get, the more value I place in art, literature, and music...the ability to create something which touches others and has a life of its own. You have done that magnificently, and I thank you for it. ~ SW
Hi Dan & Jean - hope everything is getting better with you. Here is my
story on how I got to love your music so much. My best Friend and cousin turned me on to your music when I was only 15 years old. If I
had to pick to favorites I would pick "Longer" because it is my wedding
song and also it reminds me of my best friend Lynn. My other favorite is "Leader of the Band" as it reminds me of my dad and grandpas, plus I turned my dad on
to your music as well. I really hope that you will come back to
performing in concert. I do miss seeing and hearing you at Red Rocks. Thank you so much
for your music. Love ~ Charmaine Makatura from Colorado
Dear Dan,
Thank you so much for your music. "Part of the Plan" is the best musical reminder of my high school experience. My 13-year-old son "played" "Leader of the Band" over and over on a uke to your cd when he was four years old (now he's been performing guitar publicly for three years).
Thanks for the sermon, I will get checked. Best of luck to you and yours. ~
Ray
To Dan & Jean, Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Your music has
touched Connie and I in so many ways over the years. "Nether Lands" came up on my iPod today while I was out for a run; the simplicity
and majesty of that song always moves me. Your music has made our
lives so much richer. Thank you. ~
Steve
Dear Dan, I have recently been replacing my old albums with CDs of all of
your music. I thought I would go on line and see if I have a complete
collection when I discovered the truth about your cancer diagnosis. I thought it to
be a rumor so when I read it, I was shocked.
I grew up listening to all of your music and have always felt inspired by
it. Just hearing a song takes me back to a specific place and time. I
actually used to live in Littleton, Colorado and my roommate and I used to take
drives in and around Ward, hoping to catch you playing at some out-of-the-way
pub. Ironically, I now live with my family in Gurnee, Illinois. One year after
moving to Illinois I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was extremely
aggressive and proved to be a devastating challenge, especially since my
children were 7 and 4 at the time. I went through rigorous treatment and was clear
for a year when I then had a recurrence to my liver. I went through a second
round of treatment and miraculously am now cancer free. I guess I am now a
statistical anomaly. I know that the many prayers and well wishes that
circulated for me helped ease the bumps in the road. You have always brought
peace and comfort along the road in my life so the very least I can do is offer
my prayers up for you. I sincerely hope that it brings you and your family
the peace that I have felt. I pray for all the best for you as you face this
challenge. Thanks for all the joy in song you have given to me.
Sincerely ~ Carole Wright
My thoughts are with you and your family. I have family with the same Dx
and
know the importance of your sermon. I also want to share my love for your
music. When I entered college in 1973 I lived alone in an apt. and one day
as I listened to the radio I heard of a new artist that I would grow to
love. I heard "Wysteria" and that was the beginning of my appreciation for your
music. I would sit alone studying, listening to your albums, and every word
of every song throughout college. The songs and your voice actually brought
me to Colorado where I completed graduate school. To this day I play your
music sometimes with my patients in speech therapy. Thank you for a lifetime
of music with profound lyrics. ~
Lareen Chonzena
Dan and family,
I do not want to know a world without another great musician in it
before their time. So that said my wife's and my prayers be with you and
all your family. I am from Kentucky and I saw you at Bellarmine College
I think it was 76/77. You did "Run for the Roses" as it was a Derby Eve I
think. My wife and I have seen you the last three times you were here in
Southeast FL. And Dude we miss you coming here. So again all our
prayers and peace be with you.
I rank you in with George Harrison, John Lennon, The brilliance of the
combined Eagles especially Mr. Walsh just to name a few. ~
Dennis & Meribeth Allen
Dan, my thoughts and prayers are with you. When I was 22 in 1981, I bought my first good stereo system. While in the speaker room, the store played The Innocent Age for me and I was an instant fan. Your music has always been so beautiful. Saw you many times at Poplar Creek. I wish the best for you and a complete, quick recovery. You have always been an inspiration to me. Thank you and God bless.
Dan,
My sister and I love your music!
You are in my thoughts and prayers!!
Peace ~
Jennifer
Hi Dan,
I just found out that you were ill via Rosie O'Donnell's website blog. She has been a fan of yours forever, as I have. "Face the Fire" was the best song ever written. I remember 3 Mile Island like it was yesterday. Such scary times, but we got thru it, as you will now...Keep the faith Dan.
Much love, prayers, and good wishes ~ Becky Kelly, Troy, Michigan
Dear Dan and Family -
I have just read news of your diagnosis of Prostate Ca. I wanted to send this message to say that your music has meant a great deal to me in my life. I am 45, but when I was much younger and was introduced to Phoenix and The Innocent Age I was extremely moved by the depth of your writing. I experienced a lot of loss during those years, family members, being uprooted from California to move to Canada, all sense of stability and I had difficulty relating to my peers who had much more traditional and less stressful lives. Your lyrics and music were a haven then and now. I hope you will find strength and comfort yourself in knowing how many people like me whose own life challenges were made easier because of your creativity.
You and your family will be in my thoughts. ~
Rebecca MacBride
I must take a moment to express my thoughts about you, Dan.
I was introduced to your music, by my college suitemate, in 1978. I was instantly hooked. I saw you in concert 2 times. I recently upgraded my very worn-out records to CD's. I now listen to them everywhere.
You have grown up with me over 25 years. Your music is like an old friend to me and now to my family.
Much thanks to you old friend and please have a quick recovery. ~
Jeanette O'Donnell,
Austin, Tx
Hi Jean and Dan, Just a note to let you know I am thinking of you and care much. Hope you
are thawing out after the winter snows.I know you love them, but the
flowers of spring are always welcome. If you happen to go west soon say hi to the
desert for me. I moved to the east coast, NC, and I am missing New Mexico and
Arizona a lot these days. May you both find spring in your steps and may the
trail rise up to meet you. ~ Kristin, NC.
Dan, I was so sorry to hear about the battle you are going through. You made such a difference in my life when I was a teen growing up. Your music calmed me and helped me get through the transitional period in my life. My prayers are with you. You have touched so many people. ~ Carrie
Dear Dan, Such wonderful news that your treatment is going well and you are enjoying life to the fullest. Your music has been such a comfort to me over the years. Each and every day I will keep you in my thoughts. Seeing your concert at
Red Rocks was so special to me. I was up in front in my wheelchair and what a thrill it was! Love and prayers ~ Connie Benson |
