My heart goes out to the family. I truly understand as for my husband was
diagnosed 18 months ago with the same. Everyday with him is a gift. Not a day goes
by my heart breaks knowing I won't have him around for a long time. There are
no comforting words but the support people give can help a little. We can be
proud of their courageous battles. Take care!
~Donna Mare Cantrell
I never considered myself a man of music, but recall saying out loud at a
concert in Erie PA years ago that I would gladly pay the price of admission just
to hear him sing "Leader of the Band" one more time. His music touched me in
ways no other songwriter has ever done. I've missed him without knowing it
for many years. Now with his passing I realize I'll never be able to relive
my concert experience in Erie that night. I mourn your loss and the loss to
all who loved his music.
My sincere condolences and heartfelt prayers go out to Dan's wife Jean, and to the Fogelberg Family; I know that in my heart and soul, our loving Father in Heaven has taken Dan into his arms to his final home. A loving soul such as Dan, who gave the world such beauty is deservedly at home in the presence of the Lord; rest well, my musical friend...for all the days and night that your music gave me comfort.
In God's love ~
Don Lombardi
I am so sorry to read about Dan's illness and death. Before today I was unaware. His
song "Longer" was my wedding song when I married in 1980, and it was a prescient choice
as my husband and I have been married ever since.
Early detection is the most effective chance for all cancers. My mother was recently
diagnosed with breast cancer at age 73. It was caught early because she has her routine
yearly mammograms. Don't listen to the recommendation out there that says women over age
72 no longer need annual screenings.
Dear Jean,
You and Dan have been on our hearts, especially since
my last talk with Brian. I can't imagine what you're
going through right now...All Strength and love to you
from Kathryn and Hank, Liam and Cameron. Peace and
rest for beautiful Dan.
~ Love,
Kathryn
Dan's music has been such a part of my life and has carried me through
some of my best and worst times. I'll miss you, Old Friend!!!
~Roger L. Henry
A voice raised, a silence broken, a gift given, a legacy forever. Peace be
with you, Dan. ~Tom - Columbus, Ohio
Dear Dan,
It is with the deepest sadness and regret I greet this news as I feel your loss like I am losing a brother. Your legacy is of course your music but the work of art in the innocent age will stand the test of time. In the passage from the cradle to the grave we are born madly dancing. Your dancing has come to an end all too soon. I know the reach will sing welcome as homeward you hurry along. I hope your father is there waiting for you with a loving hug to welcome you on your journey. So long my friend. ~
Phil McGibney
It's through tears that I'm writing this... Dan's music got me through so many sad and happy times in my life. I feel like I've lost a good friend. My sympathies to Jean and the family. My father has battled prostate cancer for many years. It's been tough. Every time I see or talk to him I realize how fortunate my family is to have him still with us. I will say a prayer for Dan and the family. The world has lost an incredible voice. Heaven has gained the voice of an angel.

I cannot express the sorrow I feel for the loss of this wonderful man. Dan
has touched my life in so many ways. His music has led me through the
beginning of love and the end as well. "To the Morning" was and still is my
favorite song. So many memories revolve around his songs. Please accept my
sincere condolences. I'm sure life without his presence will be much
different.
He will always be in my heart.
~SandraDee
It is with a very heavy heart that I write this. My heartfelt condolences to Jean and family.A light has gone out in this world.
Love from ~ George McMillan and family.
Dear Jean;
We all share your grief today for a musician and songwriter whom we all
loved but, can only feel a part of what you and family must be feeling
today. Therefore, know that many of us will be lifting you and your
families up in prayer for comfort, peace, assurance and strength as you have
so many friends out here whom you just haven't met.
May God give you all things good in the days ahead.
~Kevin - Orlando, FL
I also wanted to add that the song "Part of the Plan" is one that I have been
drawn back to and sing to myself for decades, when things in my life became
difficult. Perhaps this is part of God's plan.
May he rest in peace, and with music. ~
Sharon
So much wondering how he was doing over the past 2 years. I'm glad Dan was able to die at his home in Maine. I feel like I have lost a member of my family - even though I never knew him except through his music. Sat down and played 'Bones in the Sky'. "And as the moon rises, the black mountain mourns for the old friend he'll look on no more". ~ Gordon Harrison - Melbourne, Australia.
I will keep you all in my prayers! I too was a young teen girl when I first heard Dan's music, his voice. His music was enough to give me peace, make me stronger then I was. It helped me become the person I am today! He will be deeply missed but always remembered. May his music live on so that kids of the new age will be blessed with someone that had meaning to his songs. Much love and hugs. ~ Diane Hocq - Pana,IL
Dear Dan,
Rest in Peace. You are with my beloved son Justin. He died without warning,
one month, three days ago at the age of 20. He loved the water like you. He
knew how much your beautiful, inspirational music meant to me. To Jean, even
with time to plan, your grief must be overwhelming. They say that losing a
spouse or a child are the most difficult. I encourage you to take life
moment by moment as you travel this road. I am going to believe that Dan has
already met my beloved son Justin and that they are watching over us. My son
expects me to keep working on changing the world as I did while he was
growing up from a little boy to a strong, compassionate young man. I assume
you are expected to exhibit similar valor. You can do it. You will never be
alone. With love. ~ Terri - Tampa.
Dan brought my husband and I together many years ago and has kept us tied together in the years since. Thank you for so many wonderful years of music and inspiration. Our lives will forever be changed because we were touched by you. ~ Debbie and Mike
I only wish I could find a way to express the depth to which Dan's music has always touched my soul. No other music has gone so deep. It is truly timeless and, for all these years, has always taken me to a beautiful place and made my heart soar. I cannot fathom that he no longer is here among us, but thru his music and the indelible place his gifts reside in our hearts, he lives on forever. Deepest condolences for Dan's wife and family. ~ RL McGuire
I was introduced to Dan's music by a beautiful person Connie over 30 yrs ago...Connie didn't last but Dan's music has endured and been inspirational to me. To family and friends my deepest sorrow. His songs will live forever and give lasting tribute to Dan's legacy. ~ Mike Layton - Windsor,NY
I want to thank Dan for all the beautiful words and music. Your words lifted me up and your music soothed my soul when it was adrift. You will be missed but musicians leave us such loving gifts that will always inspire us. My condolences go out to Jean who was such a beautiful and loving wife and friend to Dan. Thank you for caring, loving and being there for Dan. Take care. ~ Elizabeth

I named my oldest son Daniel in honor of this wonderfully talented man. He
and his music have been a part of my life for so many years. I will continue
to treasure his beautiful music and feel very lucky to have attended several
concerts. My love and prayers go to his family. Dan, you are back with the
leader of the band. Thank you so very much for all you have meant to me and
will continue to mean for the rest of my life. ~ Robyn King and family
It is with tears in our hearts to hear of your passing .This is the saddest news I've heard in a very long time. Your music will last forever. I Love you Dan Fogelberg and will miss you so very much. Thanks for sharing your gift.
~ P.Britten, Australia
I feel as if a part of my life has just left. I remember playing his
songs in the 70's over and over again. He just had a "magic" about him.
My heartfelt condolences go to family. ~ Bonnie Sheppard -
Fort Lee, VA
I can play only two songs on the piano - "Your Song" and "The Long Way". I must have
played it hundreds of times and I still feel the music very powerfully every time I play
it. Thanks to Dan.
I grew up listening to your soothing , mellow tunes. You will be sorely
missed. God Bless Dan.
~ Mike
It is said that everyone has a soundtrack to their lives. The music of Dan
Fogelberg has been and continues to be mine.
Hearing of his passing was like losing a friend, a very dear friend who has
been with you through good times and bad.
Your fight is over now Dan, and it was a battle well fought. Now is the time
for you to sleep, and be at peace.
Everyone friends, family and fans alike will mourn your passing, but your
legacy will forever live on in your music and the dignity you fought this battle
with.
God Bless your wife and family, we are thinking of them at this time.
Your music will forever live on in the hearts of everyone whose lives you
touched.
~ Angela Hunt - Bolton, England
This morning, I'm "watching the sun, watching it come, watching it come up over the rooftops," and I'm saddened. We never met, but Dan was my friend. And yours. I have a large framed copy of the lyrics to "The Power of Gold" hanging in my barbershop; it reminds me and my customers that the important things in life cannot be bought at any price. Also, during down times, I break out the guitar and play Dan's songs, and some of my own. I thank you for the words and the music, the peace in the midst of a cacophonic world, and I wish peace to your family. Today we will interrupt Christmas music in the shop for a day of only Dan's music. God Bless you all. ~ Wendell - Bradenton, Florida.
Jean & family my deepest condolences on the passing of Dan. His music will always keep him alive in our hearts and minds. He will be truly missed.

Dear Jean and other loved ones -
I send my sadness at the loss of Dan Fogelberg. I also thank him for his
encouraging others to get tested for prostate cancer.
I saw Dan in concert in Washington DC and loved every minute of it. My
father was always playing music in our home and "Leader of The Band" is
an amazing song which always reminded me of him. "Run for the Roses" is
one for my mother - I will always picture her singing that as I was
growing up.
Godspeed to all of you in your sadness.
We will remember Dan.
~
Rebecca
A very sad day. My heartfelt thoughts go out to Jean and the rest of the
Fogelberg family. Dan's music has had and will continue to have a great
impact on many lives. His physical pain is gone but his memory will live
on. Rest in peace Dan. You will be sorely missed. ~ Stephen - North
Babylon, NY
I was shocked and saddened to learn of Dan's death. His music touched so
many people for so many years. When I was 17 years old my older brother
died of a heroin overdose. Dan's music, especially the album "Souvenirs"
enabled me to get through the most difficult part of my young life. Thank
you Dan and rest in peace. Your music lives forever!
~ Polly White -
St. Pete Beach, Florida
Just learned of Dan's passing while having my morning coffee (organic, fair
trade, of course.) "Nether Lands" got me through some very tough times,
providing inspiration, comfort and the strength to continue seeing the good
in people, and loving them when I wanted to just give up.
Through the years his music has been passed down in the family. Now, the
four, five and six year olds are asking me...."Hey, play that song...the one
about the "Heavenly Wings." Was never able to see you in concert, but I
survived many a Buffalo blizzard hunkered down listening to your beautiful
music.
Your soul is indeed rising and singing now, Dan. To you wife, and other
loved ones, may I offer you my deepest sympathy and wish you comfort and
peace.
Love and peace ~ Becca
The world is a poorer place today. It is rare when a person of such beauty is able to touch the hearts of so many people and to have him die at such an early age is sad beyond belief. I go forth today with a heavy heart. May you find some peace Jean in knowing that Dan was a very special man and that he helped shape MY life and I will miss his beautiful music until my own passing. May he rest in eternal peace.
~ Gary Holdcroft
God Bless you Dan. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent and
insight over the years.
~ Thom - Fuquay Varina, NC.
My life is intertwined with Dan’s music. I laughed, loved, grew up, with his
music playing in the background. I feel such a sense of loss today. My
deepest sympathy to his family over their immense loss. Dan, thank you for
sharing your gift, and Godspeed on your journey to the stars. ~ Lyn
My deepest sympathy to the Fogelberg family on the loss of a great musician and great man. I always loved his music and felt a personal connection (even though I didn't know him) I was born and raised and went to high school in Pekin, Illinois where Larry Fogelberg (the "Leader of the Band") was the band director. I had many friends who played under Mr. Fogelberg and to this day whenever I hear that song it takes me back to my youth and central Illinois. We will miss you, Dan. Rest in peace.
To Dan's family, we fans are so sorry for your loss.
Dan touched so many people. May God give you the
strength and courage to get through this difficult
time. ~Linda
Dan.......everyone will be talking about your songs and lyrics and all,
but from one musician to another.......MAN, YOU SURE COULD PLAY !!!
~ Mark Giesting
There are tears in my eyes as I'm typing
this message, for the loss of such an
extraordinary artist. But there is a smile in
my heart that will always be there, for the
joy and inspiration his music has given me and so many others. I'll never forget
the live performances I was so fortunate
to catch. Heaven just got a little more beautiful. ~ Jenny Vinyard
- Springfield, MO
He will truly be missed. But his music will definitely play on.
~ Betsy
Dan was a great artist who created beautiful music with significant lyrics. When they're
not on the airwaves or in my I-pod, his songs still play in my head. They are a part of
me and millions if other humans. He made a lot out of those 56 years. I'm sorry to lose
him.
~ Gideon Fountain
To all who loved Dan as we loved his music my deepest heart felt sympathy. I
heard on the radio this morning that Dan had passed away. I was reflecting
on the last time I had seen him in concert it had been years but his music,
lyrics, and that strong voice still rang in my ears. His words always
inspired me in times of love and sadness. What words would he sing now I
wonder? Dan.......Thank you. Rest in Peace Brother.
~ Michael A. Sanchez
I'm sorry I didn't tell Dan what his music meant to me all these years.
Peace to his family now. ~
Steve Kelley
His music touched many hearts and spoke words many could not speak for themselves. He will live on through those words and the beautiful music he created. God bless to his family and friends. He will rest in peace.
My heartfelt condolences.
Anyone who loves music, the environment, and family mourns the loss of a great artist, and musician today. I've been thinking back to a concert of Dan's my wife and I went to here in Buffalo and remembering the great performance he gave. He was a unique performer who had the ability to craft his words and melodies into something very special. May the trail rise up to meet you Dan.
~ Jim & Joanne
May Dan's spirit fly on angel's wings, and may he rest in the palm of God's
hand. Dan shared his Light with us through his music. He was and will continue
to be a gift of song to the weary world. Godspeed on your journey. ~
Beth Johnson
Just wanted to say God bless you Dan. I have listened to your music since I
was a kid in the back woods of North Carolina and I play at least one of
your songs every morning when I first get to work. It just puts me in a
peaceful mood and makes my day that much better. "Hard to Say" is my
favorite and it is definitely hard to say good-bye to such a great person,
but I know you are where God wants you to be.
Sincerely ~ Dennis Dudley
I first saw Danny when he performed at the Red Herring in Campaign,
Illinois in the late 60's and would pass the hat at 3 AM for his only
compensation. Later, he disappeared for a while and came back with some
new songs he had written. Before that he had been doing covers,
especially of Neil Young. He later gave a concert in the church
sanctuary upstairs as his fans would no longer fit in the coffee shop in
the basement. At that point we knew he was going places. I had a band
at the time as well and we were managed by Irving Azoff.. Some of my
band members eventually joined REO Speedwagon, including Bruce Hall,
Gary Richrath and Michael Murphy. One of my bandmates was good friends
with Danny and kept in touch all these years. He will be missed. His
music touched us all. ~ Michael Walkup
Dear Jean,
I am so saddened to hear of Dan's passing away.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the rest of your family.
I saw Dan in concert in San Luis Obispo, California a few years ago. It was
an incredible experience to see and hear his music live on stage.
I have been a disc jockey for over 40 years and have been playing Dan's
music ever since he started recording.
I am so grateful for Dan's music, which he left us to be played and enjoyed
for many generations to come.
Sincerest Condolences. ~

Dear Fogelberg Family & Friends,
Deepest condolences in the loss of Dan. Our entire family, and believe me there's a bunch, love Dan's music and spirit and through his wonderful talent, he will never be forgotten.
Right now, my beloved brother in law Bruce (also a musician), is fighting a very aggressive prostate cancer. It was found about a year ago and his prognosis is grim. Nevertheless, with examples like Dan, he's finding the strength to keep scrapping for more time with my sister, Sarah, and all of us.
Thank you for sharing Dan with us all these year. Please know that our family will lift yours up in prayer as you go through this time of loss.
God bless you and yours. ~
Patty Rasmussen
Rest in peace, Dan. We'll miss you. ~ Lisa in Virginia
Jean,
My wife Vicki and I share our condolences. Dan's music had such a wonderful influence on my life in the early 80's and in a way brought my wife and I together. It was through his music that I found peace and love and the desire to put my thoughts and feelings to pen and paper.
Please accept our sincere regrets for your loss.
All our love. ~ Joe & Vicki Sims
It is with a heavy heart that I have read of Dan's passing. His music helped me through some of the darkest days of my life and inspired me to write music of my own. I know of his connection with the Native Americans and can only rejoice that he has changed worlds and is being embraced by his Forefathers. ~
Bob Jamison -
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Dan's passing has affected me in a more profound way than any other
musician. His songs describe life and how to deal with in such a poignant
way that so few can communicate. His wisdom was far beyond his years. My
sincere condolences to his family and to all of us who loved his music. ~ RC -
Boston MA.
I am so saddened by the news of Dan's passing; he was such a big part of
my life from a very early age, and his songs were the soundtrack to some
of my fondest life's memories. My son, now 23, loved him from the age
of 2 on, and was only 3 when he saw him in concert. My deepest sympathy
to his wife Jean and his family. The world will be an emptier place
without him and his beautiful music.
To Jean and the Family of Dan
I'm so sorry to hear the passing of Dan. He was truly a real artist in every sense. His spirit and voice will live forever. Rest in Peace Dan you will be dearly missed.
Peace ~ William
The world is a lesser place, but heaven is rejoicing. I've missed Dan's
creativity over these years of struggle. And now I'm heartbroken knowing
there will be no more music from one of the most talented people of my
generation. My heart grieves at the loss of a kindred soul that I've
never personally met. But we'll meet some day, my friend. ~Tim
Dan, I gave a light to a candle for you praying you would come back to us. I remember seeing you in Colorado with a friend of mine. We delivered a painting and decided to sit and relax. There you were sitting; speaking with a lady. I wanted to jump up and come over, but realized you were in a private moment. You are not gone, just in spirit within our hearts and the Universe. This is for you Dan, We visit this world for only a moment and that moment is known as life. During this time we learn about laughter but also of tears. We find more questions than we do answers. We experience the joy of new arrivals and feel the sadness of loved ones departures. So we must try to live every second, for oh, so quickly our moment is gone.
I stumbled upon Dan Fogelberg's obituary in this morning's Atlanta Journal Constitution. I am sorry to say I didn't even know he was suffering from cancer - so I was shocked. I was a 13 year old newly arrived in the U.S. in the early 80's and "Same Old Lang Syne" was one of my favorite songs of that year. Especially at this time of year, when I have the radio tuned to the "all Christmas music all the time" stations, I hear "Same Old Lang Syne" and invariably turn up the volume. After reading the article, I got up from my cup of coffee and newspaper, and dusted off my Dan Fogelberg Greatest Hits CD and listened to it for the first time in many, many years and said a prayer. My condolences to his family and friends.
I never had the wonderful opportunity to see Dan in concert, but I did see him on a PBS special last year that was taped earlier in 2003. It was very special...he will be missed but his music will live on! I have had the opportunity to sing "Longer" at several weddings of friends. It was a special part of the ceremony to be sure. “Same Old Lang Syne” has brought many a tear this holiday season and now will do so even more. My thoughts and prayers to his family…and yes, I had the medical procedure done this past year, thankfully no cancer, strongly recommended as early diagnosis for all of us 50 and over. ~ Rick Tobin
Dan touches my heart much like the music of the other greats like McCartney,
Browne, and Taylor.
Even though we do not understand how or why music touches us as it does,
thank you Dan for a well lived and useful life.
~ Ken
Jean,
My heart goes out to you concerning your great loss. Dan's music is so very special and touched many people worldwide. We are all grateful for the presence of his wonderful talent and his ability to communicate the way he did. ~
Patrick - Omaha area drummer
To the Fogelberg Family,
My wife and I were deeply saddened by the news of Dan passing. We did not know of his fight against cancer.
When I purchased, way back in the 70's, my first Fogelberg album, because I loved the song "Part of the Plan", I had no idea of the depth his is ability to touch a listener. And as the years and albums (CDs) rolled out I purchased them without even a 'test drive'...I knew the music and lyrics (Damn, he could write incredible lyrics!) would be top shelf. Thank you, thank you for the years of pleasure found in the music.
I know Dan is watching from his Heavenly perch as all these accolades are being passed along...he deserves them all and more. As for his family and friends, he'll always be around.
~

I am heartbroken at the loss of the man whose music meant so much to so
many. My prayers are with Dan's family and with Jean. Jean, I am so
grateful that Dan had you in his life and that you were there for him. God
bless you. ~ Cheryl Agin
I was introduced to Dan's music by my husband, who is a musician. He loved the depth of your lyrics and the softness of your music. He waited patiently for your new albums and religiously bought each one. He learned to play all of your music and even won a "name that Dan Fogelberg tune contest", in only two notes! To say he was a fan is an understatement--your music defined him. Dan was a rare talent, who made us all feel like we were his friends.
Heaven is welcoming the beautiful music of Dan with open arms. What a shame that earth has lost such a beautiful soul--the world will never be the same without you. You will be missed.
My deepest sympathy to his wife and family.
I grew up listening to Dan and his music will continue to influence me forever. My heartfelt condolences to his wife Jean and his family.
