In 1974, Dan Fogelberg changed the life of an innocent 14 year old girl....a girl who had never heard music that truly inspired the soul. His music has always meant a great deal to me, and still at 47, listening to "Home Free" takes me back to a time of innocence and of being completely free. I am so sorry that the world lost one of the true "poetic" songwriters. He brought such great beauty to the world and will be truly missed by this fan. ~ Susan Dobbs
His music was the soundtrack of many of the best years and events of my life. I was truly sad to hear he is gone, far too soon. Condolences to his family. ~ McLean, VA
Dan's lovely music and tender voice will always be in my heart and in the hearts of all who heard him. I very much regret that his life has ended at a time when he should have just now been able to look back on all his accomplishments and decide on how he would choose to spend his golden years. More than likely, he would have continued to create more beautiful songs and ballads to share with us. We can only imagine what might have been and must accept what now is. Dan is now resting in the arms of his God until in due time, when he will be appointed his new and final mission in the new world to come. ~ Jeff Poole, Troy, OH
I was so very sad to hear of Dan's passing. I've been wondering how he was doing this week. I grew up in Illinois and used to see him in the music stores. I know he's at peace now. He will truly be missed. ~ Gail, Concord, California
At dawn this morning the sunlight faded and our hearts broke as we learned of Dan's passing. Words could never begin to express how his music has touched our lives. The only solace we will find through this deafening loss will be in Dan's music--- it will be all that we hear today. Our heartfelt condolences ~ Wendy & Mark
Dan you were the leader of the band, just think of the music you can now play up in heaven. May peace be with your wife and family. One never knows when your time is up. I have enjoyed your music over the years. Thank you for sharing your great talent. You have also made me think more of taking care of ones self and getting a test also. God bless and Keep your family. ~ Roger D. Robinette
Having known Dan's music since before his first album, I was saddened by today's news. I was lucky enough to see him at Red Rocks in 1978 or '79 and it was a delightful show. My deepest condolences to his family and colleagues. ~ Julie Silverman
Dan's voice was a gift from God. We were all blessed just to him sing. And how lucky we were to see him in concert, which I thank God for every time I got the chance to hear him sing "Heart Hotels" in person. We will miss him here on Earth, but I know that we'll all hear him again . My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Jean and the rest of his family and all of his life-long loyal fans...~ Phyllis Souza, Glendale , New York
Deepest Condolences and a Most Heartfelt Thank You. My reflections today center on the ten nights in my life I sat in small and large auditoriums entranced by the magic of the music that allowed me to escape from the day to day struggle we all face. Most fondly I remember the "Evenings With Dan Fogelberg" when he played alone on piano and guitar. The beauty of art is that it does not disappear with the passing of the creator. I will never think of Dan as a fading memory, rather, as a facilitator of the dreams and passions brought to light through his music. So many times he found the words to express my feelings and desires for life. His growth as a writer paralleled the advancing age of those of us who loved him form the start. A simple thank you and goodbye seem incredibly inadequate today. I will treasure for all of my life what he shared and will continue to share with me. ~ Emmett Miller
It is with a very heavy heart that I write this email. I started listening to Dan the early 80's. His music was so attached to the relationship I shared with my first true love. There is never a time that I don't think about those early days with I hear his music. I will miss him but will cherish the legacy he left behind. My husband is 52 and is sharing the word of early detection thanks to Dan. God Bless Jean....Alot of people loved (and continue to) him and his music. ~ Deanna Greene
I'm so sad hearing this news. I'm 54 and I remember buying and always listening to Home Free when it first came out and from that day on, I had to buy every new Fogelberg record that came out. In high school, we used to cruise around all the time listening to his songs on cassette in the car. Dan's music has always moved and inspired me. ~ Mike Harris - Vienna,Va.
I never knew you. I did know your music. How can someone reach people without ever knowing them? You found a way. Amazing.... Never really gone. Never ever forgotten. Hearts always remember.
Dan, I know that you can see and hear these words - because you must surely be an angel singing with the Christmas choir in Heaven. You have touched us with your music as no one has through the years, and that will ease our pain of losing you now. We will always have your voice, and the soul inside those songs...we hope that your family that remains know that we are here in spirit for them. Our prayer and vision is that you have been reunited with the Dad that you loved so...keep that precious light on, Dan, so you can guide us all home one day. We will always - always - cherish you!
We spent the day remembering Dan, the music, the joy, the sorrow. But we have spent the years listening to his voice and his songs will never be forgotten. The memories of our past are entwined to his songs. Our sincere sorrow is all we can offer to Jean and his family and friends. ~ Bill and Carmella
I just learned of Dan's passing. Between 1975-1978 at the Pi Kap House only Dan's music was allowed to be played...and when I heard he had passed on it brought back many wonderful memories of college life and the great music he gave us all. He may be gone from us physically now but his legacy will live long. May God bless Dan's soul and his family in this time of loss. ~ Bob Roseberry
"Same Old Lang Syne" is a song that I play at Christmas time and just replay relationships that I've had in my life. Memories are such a beautiful thing. I know Dan's memories will live strong with his wife & family. I pray that I join Dan Fogelberg in heaven and am appointed to sing with him in heaven. He will always be "the leader of MY BAND". I loved him dearly. God Bless you & God is thrilled that he's there with him. Merry Christmas (tears streaming down my face). ~ Maryellen Richardson, Troy, MO
I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Dan's music was a huge part of my college experience in the early 1980's. So many memories his music and lyrics are a part of, I will only treasure them more. May peace be with all of his family. ~ RS
I will miss the only man in the world, who could put the contents of my soul into a song, more than words can express. God be with you Dan, for you've left the pain behind. Your lifelong fan ~ Doug
Dan Fogelberg's music has been a constant presence and inspiration in my life for over 20 years. The amazing lyrics and beautiful melodies are timeless and I hope will continue to inspire future generations. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
My heart is truly saddened by losing one of the most influential musicians of my life. Love to the family during this difficult time. He will always live on in the music. ~ Greg Lovett....Alabama
You will never know how your music enriched my life. Maybe you do now thank God you shared it with us so freely. What a rich and rewarding life you lead. I hope you were aware. It would be a beautiful thing to share only one song with the world and you shared so many. Thank you for being Dan Fogelberg.
Deeply saddened by his early departure we send our thoughts and prayers to his wife, family and friends. His voice and beautiful music touch us all in different ways. His journey has ended but the magic of his music will live forever. ~ Octavio & Pauletta Montalva
Dear Fogelberg Family - May the love and sympathy of all of Dan¹s fans give you strength in these difficult times. We may not of known him personally, but we all still loved him. Thanks for sharing all your gifts Dan.~ John Beckman Jr
Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
WE WILL REMEMBER YOU
May the peace and tranquility Dan passed on to all of us grace him in passing, and may all who knew Dan come to appreciatively acknowledge an extraordinary musician. Thank you, Sir.
The world will truly miss such a great artist...but he will remain in our hearts thru the wonderful music!! I have had the pleasure of seeing him many, many times (every chance that I could get) in concert and he has always been such an inspiration! My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. His legacy will always live on. ~ Patti M.
Dan will be greatly missed by this loyal fan. When my mother was dying of cancer, I would put his music on and felt comforted. Hopefully, his music will continue to comfort Jean and all his friends. ~ Jan Evans
I would like to try and express my gratitude for having had the privilege of seeing Dan perform on 3 occasions over the years. I have been a fan since the 70's and Dan's music helped me get through a lot of difficult challenges. Whenever I needed to refresh my energy I would listen to his wonderful music and could find peace , be restored for another day. I too have been battling the same sickness that took Dan. I am overwhelmed with emotion at the moment and it is difficult to express my true feelings. I will always miss his inner beauty and haunting lyrics. With deepest respect, I wish you peace.
My thoughts and prayers go out to those close to Dan. The enjoyment he has given me through his music is one that words cannot express. The opportunity to see him perform over the years has been a blessing. His music will live for generations as those of us who loved his music have shared it with our children. Thanks for your gift! ~ Marc W. Fruth
Mr. Dan Fogelberg was a big part of why I took up guitar and singing. I'm 50, and can still play some of his songs. I'm thankful for the inspiration he gave so many like me to make music, but even more thankful for the music itself. It was a privilege to have him on stage. To those who knew and loved him best...your family and close friends, you were so much more than music...you were a dear and precious loved one...and to them I say: You all have my deepest sympathies. I know you will miss him more than anyone will. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you. Thank you Lord, for the life of Dan Fogelberg, and the joy in his beautiful music. ~ Larry McCauley, Fort Worth, Texas
Dear All, Dan will be a great loss. First thing this morning I got his cd out and I have been playing his magical music all morning. Thanks to him for leaving us that . May God hold you in his arms while you grieve. ~ Boni
Jean, and the family of Dan, I cannot express the gratitude I hold for the gift of heart and soul Dan's music gave to this world. I remember the first time I saw Dan perform in Nashville, and I got in with a fake ID. I have only missed one concert since the late seventies that passed through Nashville, and even made it to a couple in Atlanta. I have never been so touched for so many reasons under so many different circumstances through life as by Dan's
body of work. I still have all of the albums I ever bought and can't count how many tapes I wore out traveling down the highway driving to his music. Many things in my life have changed over the years but the love of Dan's music has always been a constant. His passion for the environment has been a strong influence in my life and has kept me on track as a willing participant to be part of the solution instead of part of the cause in taking care of this beautiful planet we live on. The first time I heard "Windows and Walls" it took me to the ground, it is a constant reminder to me to keep in touch with those I love and not forget how much we all need people in our lives. The lyrics to this song remind me of my grandmother who is currently 93 years old, this song could have been written about her and keeps me from becoming complacent in my attention to her. My thoughts are with you at this time, and I will be forever grateful for the influence his music has on my life. ~ Lynn - Nashville, TN
You influenced me, and the soundtrack of my life.
The first song I ever played in public was "Face the Fire".
Thank you for all the songs, joy, and love...
When I first heard Dan had prostate cancer, I was very sad. When I heard he died this morning, I cried. I love his music. His song, "Longer" was a hit in 1980 when my husband Jeff and I were married. I carry this song in my heart to this day. Just know that Dan's message to get checked for prostate cancer helped my husband. I pushed Jeff to go to the Dr. for an annual physical and he finally did, just last month.
I will always cherish Dan's music and his legend. My deepest condolences to Dan's family and friends. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. ~
Pennie DuPree
Hi there -
I only have one DF album - 'The Wild Places' - but 'Song Of The Sea' is one of my most favorite songs of all time. I'm sad to say that I wasn't even aware of his condition, and so to read such grave news on the BBC website is very sad indeed. Rest in peace, Dan. You and yours will be in our prayers.
With deepest condolences ~
Anthony - South Wales - United Kingdom.
I was so very overwhelmed with the news of Dan's passing this morning.
His music has been a mainstay of my life from his very first release.
Can't say how many concerts I've attended over the years. My children
who are in their mid to late twenties have grown up on Dan's music and
he inspired all of them to their own musical careers in voice, writing
and performance. I know that his battle was faced with dignity with a
strong sense of the reality. We have truly lost a great writer and
musician. He and his music will live on forever as will the shared
memories of his family, friends and fans. I can only hope for a healing
for the family through the "grief stage" of this experience. May God
bless them with His peace and healing. Many tears are being shed around
the globe and we grieve with Jean and the whole Fogelberg family.
With deep and heartfelt sorrow. ~
Jean Anne Spivey
I grew up in the 80's and Dan Fogelberg was a large part of the mainstream music culture at that time; his music, lyrics, and wonderful voice were a peaceful haven during college and graduate school. I will remember and cherish him as long as I live.
Dear Dan, You were and still are an inspiration comparable to your melodic description of you and your Dad, awesome. Thanks for the insight that made those days (70's) easier to focus and succeed. Those were GOOD TIMES! ~ Phil, Roanoke, VA
My thoughts and prayers are with Dan and his family and friends. I was so
saddened to hear he lost his fight with cancer. I will forever be thankful that
I discovered his music as a teenager. His music spoke to my heart and soul in a
way no other artist has ever been able to do. He will be missed more than words
can express. God bless you, Dan. ~
Mary
I grew up listening to Dan Fogelberg and I was saddened to hear of
his
passing. His music will live on. I offer my deepest condolences to his
family.

Jean -
I know that I am just one of millions sharing their feelings of sadness, love and support.
However, I could not let this moment pass without letting you know just some of my
thoughts.
I had been playing the guitar for about a year. 1980. I grew up in a sheltered Christian
home. I hadn't listened to a lot of "secular" music. A friend of mine who was one of my
mentors in guitar, kept playing these "cool" songs - "The Sand And The Foam", "Longer",
"Run For The Roses", just to name a few. That was my introduction to Dan's music. In
1981 I bought my first album of his music. "The Innocent Age." Without question,
one of the most Spiritual albums I own. Dan never knew me, we would never meet. Yet
he touched me like an old friend. His voice was familiar, his lyrics so personal. His love
for life and passion for music were so evident, that the deaf and blind could understand
and feel his heart.
Now at 45, I lead worship in my church. I find myself incorporating styles of Dan's strumming
and chord selections in my music. The Spirit that he so skillfully crafted is a part of me,
a part of my music now. There will be many in heaven because of the spiritual force behind
Dan and his music. I am humbled that I would be so removed and yet a simple small part
of his music. If only I could have known him face to face. (I know his music does allow us
a small glimpse of him).
Jean, thank you for sharing your husband with all of us, but also with me. Thank you for your
sacrifice of time while Dan helped shape our world. This earth is truly a better place because
he was here. It is a better place because of your love for him and with us. Thank you. Oddly
enough, like "Same Old Lang Syne," the cold snap here in Colorado broke. The snow will melt
in my yard today. And if it could, it would rain.
Dan was one of my Heroes. ~
Mark Matthews
To the Family of Dan Fogelberg - I cannot express my sorrow at the news of Dan's passing or the joy that his music gave me
throughout the years. As a central Illinois native, I was especially touched by the "local boy who made good".
I thank God for the legacy this man left us.
Bless you now and forever. ~
Roxy
I've been a professional/semi-professional musician for much of my life.
My father was also a musician and, because of these two facts, I found
much in common with Dan. Listening to "Leader of the Band" still brings
a tear to my eye and made me bawl like a baby after my own father passed
away.
More importantly, I gained much inspiration from Dan, his career, and
his depth as a performer and writer. I was even able to improve my
harmony vocalization skills by practicing along with Dan's recordings.
I have a multitude of memories and experiences that can be directly
attributed or associated with the music of Dan Fogelberg. One of my
life's regrets is that I never got to see him perform live.
He will be missed.
I am so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. He will be sorely missed but his legacy
will live on forever in our hearts, minds, and souls. In my teens and early
adult years, his words filled a gap in my life that I will always treasure. In
1977-78, I was lucky enough to see Dan in concert in Berkeley, CA, what a
day! My condolences to his wife and family. Six years ago my mother passed away
and know the emptiness, longing, and sadness one feels at a loved one's
departure. May we all be comforted to know that Dan is no longer suffering and
at peace and jamming with all the greats!
Best wishes ~ Renee, San Francisco, CA
"He fills his page of history, dreams his dreams and is gone."
How can one man have managed to write so many songs that touched so
many, so deeply. His words so eloquent, his music so moving. I was in
high school when Dan's first album was released, and have been a fan
ever since. I eagerly awaited every album he released, and played them
until they wore out. No matter what the circumstance, there was always
a song to fill an empty void, or make the highs even higher.
My deepest condolences to Jean, the rest of the family, and the world
for this tremendous loss.
You will be missed, Dan. Rest in peace. ~
Bev C. - Las Vegas, Nevada
I have seen Dan in concert many, many times. Learned about him in the early 70's and I have been a fan since. Anyone would tell you Dan is my #1 man. My sincere condolences to all of Dan's family. I will surely miss him; I have no doubt he is happy and with Our Lord Jesus. God Bless You Dan and Family ~
Josie from Jersey
Dan and his family are in our prayers. God Bless! ~
JAI Family
Dear Jean and Family,
I loved Dan's music and was very saddened to hear of his passing. His music enriched my growing-up years, and I have The Innocent Age on vinyl. I will continue to treasure it and the music. May God give you strength and comfort in the days and weeks to come. ~

"To The Morning" was the first Fogelberg song introduced to me twenty
five years ago. "Home Free" along with "Phoenix", have been two
favorites in my whole collection. Bless you in this time of mourning
and remembrance. ~
Scott Stilwell
Having loved your music for over 30 years, I feel as though I've lost part of my own
family and a bit of my soul. Your heartfelt lyrics and beautiful music will provide
all of us who loved you with peace and comfort as we live on without you. Your music is
now is our souls. Thank you for this great legacy. ~ Susan Coleman, Louisville, KY
Thanks Dan for all the great songs, my friends and I grew up with your music,
and it touched us. And although we've never met, we feel like we've lost an old friend.
God Bless You Dan! ~
CA from Honolulu, HI
Dan was such a talented singer and songwriter he will be missed by many. He
was the only singer my son ever told me he enjoyed listening to from my
collection of music (my son likes heavy metal), but he told me "he sings
good songs", which was a REAL complement. My condolences to Jean, family
and friends. I was blessed to see him in concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma a few
years ago. ~
Brenda Smith, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
I've been grieving over losing Dan but I know that he is at peace. May God bless
his family with strength to go on until they meet again. What a gifted man of
God! A true blessing to all who knew his music! Love you Dan, we will miss you ~ Kat & Doug
My prayers go out to Jean and the family. Dan was by far, the singer/songwriter that brought about and introspective approach to my being. The "Innocent Age" was the album that I listened to over and over for solace and strength. His music was source of inspiration to me during many trials and obstacles in my life. I sought comfort in his words. My hope is that Dan realized the joy and magic that he brought to all who listened to his prolific lyrics.
Though you will be greatly missed... your music will live on forever! ~ Tom, Gurnee, IL
Today is the day the music died for me. His music made the lonely days of an awkward teenage girl easier. The power of his lyrics still touch the heart of this middle-aged woman. Dan will be greatly missed. My condolences to his wife and family.
The guitar and the voice are silent, but only for a moment. Play Loud
and Sing Strong in the Kingdom of Heaven....~ Bear
Your music is timeless as are you. Thank you for your gift of music to
the world. In it we all have found a bit of ourselves. May your family
find much peace in the memories you shared. ~ patti
My deepest condolences. Many, many years ago, I was working in
Yellowstone Park, and a close friend of mine shared my love for Dan's
music. We hitchhiked out of Wyoming and got a ride to Colorado where Dan
was reported to be staying. I will never forget him or his music, or
those days of waiting in anticipation for the "new album" he was putting
out...or the concerts. My very favorite concert was in Southern
California, where he closed with an old gospel song. What a man. Thanks
for the music, Dan. Sincerely ~ Luann Hays of Las
Vegas, NV
I, like many, many others, actually learned to play acoustic guitar while
listening along with his early albums. The talent he had was truly
extraordinary. I hope he finds rest in the high country of heaven. We will miss
you, Dan. ~ Eric Hendry, Dallas
I am so saddened by the loss of one of our greatest artists. As many have already said, it's as if I have lost one of my own family members. His music has helped me through many difficult times. I started listening to him at age 14 and at age 44 I still listen to him. Your family was very lucky to have him. Because we (the public) only know him by his music and not as a friend the words he has written tells us a lot about his character and the kind of person he was. My prayers are with you and your family and know he will be greatly missed. ~
Carol Lalli,
Yorktown, Virginia
Dear Family and Friends,
I am so very sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I cannot describe what Dan's music has meant to me throughout the years, except to say that when I got an iPOD at the ripe old age of 50, the first (and almost only) complete album I downloaded was "Captured Angel," and I have it on vinyl, 8-track, cassette, and CD. His is another voice silenced too soon. God bless you all. ~
Sara Volk
The world has lost one of the purest voices and noblest expressions of the muse with
Dan's passing. I share the feeling of loss with all of the people Dan's music has
touched. I will treasures his musical legacy and share it with my grandchildren. See you
in my memories Dan... ~
Don Fera
Another leader of the band has gone . RIP
I was privileged enough to share a stage once with Dan Fogelberg, and
expressed to him that "Aspen/These Days" were the songs that inspired me
to learn to play the piano so many years ago. He was a model of humility
even in the peak moments of his career.
No other musician has had the inspiration for me like he did.
My life has been significantly blessed and sweeter for having heard his
voice, and experienced his presence.
I'm sorry for your loss. ~
Douglas Spotted Eagle,
musician/2001 Grammy Award recipient
It was sometime in 1974 when I first found Souvenirs. I was stationed in Hawaii and only had an amp and turntable and headphones. Being an Illinois (Decatur) boy also, I identified. I always loved the melodies and lyrics. I quickly bought Home Free and was forever hooked.
Thank you, Dan Fogelberg, for all the great music.
Jean, family and friends of Dan,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn the physical loss of
Dan. I personally look forward to meeting Dan in God's kingdom one day. Thank
God we still have his music with us.
God bless ~
Michael Young & family,
San Marcos, CA
So very sorry to hear of Dan's passing this morning. He was a fine poet and musician.
He and his family are in my prayers.
Dan's songs make me get up and call someone I haven't spoken to in a while. His works
can still make me smile in spite of myself or give me a lump in my throat even after
hearing the song countless other times.
Thanks to all of his family for sharing him with us all of these years. ~
Paul Weisblatt
I was just thinking yesterday that I hadn't heard much from Dan on the radio, and that I ought to check and see what kind of music he has been doing recently. I was unaware of the prostate cancer, and was quite shocked to hear the news on the television.
Jean, my prayers are with you and your family this day. I want you to know how very much I enjoyed your husband's music, and especially the QUALITY of his music. To this day, I cannot hear "Leader of the Band" without breaking down in tears, even though I'm really not that kind of gal. But I can't imagine I'm alone in this response -- definitely the sign of an exceptional musician, and an exceptional storyteller.
Thank you ~
Kris
My family and I wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the Fogelberg family
at this sad time. We will choose not to remember his passing but celebrate the
joy he gave us in our youth and all that he stood for. Music has lost a quiet
giant, but I will always have memories of the good times he was part of in my
life.
God Bless You Dan. ~
Joe Bradley
Thank you Dan for all of the beautiful memories that your music evokes. Your rhythmical words and melodies have always stirred my imagination and
emotions taking me back to some of the most poignant and magical times of my
life....your lyrics are poetry that I will treasure forever. ~ C
Be swift on your way, Dan. We have a kinship that matters greatly to me; we share the
same name, and you died on the date of my birth, December 16th. I hope to see you on the
other side. ~ Dan Smith
We were so very lucky to have Dan for as long as we did, even though it was way
too short. God must have wanted him in his band really bad to take him so early. Rest in Peace.
Dry your tears
Angels hold him now
No one will forget him
Forever you will live in our hearts
Out live our dreams
Give yourself peace of mind
Each time we meet
Live again in the music
Be aware of our tears
Even to the end of time
Reach for the stars
Give us time to heal
Dear Jean,
I have listened to Dan's music and attended his concerts for over 20 years. No one
before or since compares. His music and lyrics were unmatched. Clearly he had a
God-given gift and thank heaven he magnified that gift for the benefit of so many.
At times like this the immortality of the soul becomes a poignant yearning of the
soul. Will I ever see him again? Has he gone somewhere peaceful free from pain-and
sorrow caused by the ravages of this disease? Is he with his parents, grandparents and
other loved ones already over the bridge?
Let me assure you of the reality of life after this life and of the immortality of the
soul and the reality of the resurrection. You will see him. He lives on the other side
of the veil and he lives in our hearts forever through our memories and his marvelous
music. You may even receive messages from him from the other side through dreams, strong deep impressions that he is near, even clear realizations that you never quite
understood before. You may even feel impressed to write music that would never have
come to your mind without outside assistance.
May God bless you in the days and weeks ahead.
Your friend ~
Randy Gibbs
I am a longtime fan of this wonderful man!! He inspired me so often when I was down. I am a cancer survivor
so I know the pains that he must have had to go through.
My family and I always saw Dan as a musical part of our lives....my sons
were raised on his songs and learned them by heart.
He will leave a huge hole in the musical community, he rests now and we must
continue our lives whit what he gave us.
Thank you Dan Fogelberg for the MUSIC. You truly were a "Leader of the Band"
My prayers are extended to the grieving family of Dan Fogelberg. His music will always be with us to love and enjoy. I especially love "Same Ole Lang Syne" which I listen to frequently at this time of year. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. ~
Vilna M. Johnson,
Bridgetown, Barbados
My wife and I give our condolences to you, Jean Fogelberg, for the loss of
your good husband, Dan.
I am sorry for your pain, but I assure you, he is in a much better place.
A time will come when you
and all the world will see and hear Dan sing again. When I was a young,
shy teenager of 16 back in
1977, I first heard a song from your husband on the radio, the classic
title cut "Nether Lands", a
tune that deeply moved me, especially musically. It was one of a few
songs ever written in rock
history that shaped the style of music I would firmly get to like within
me. The Nether Lands album
would turn out to be the first record I purchased in my life, and one I
consider to be a masterpiece.
I wish to thank Dan Fogelberg for writing these songs and many other great
tunes that he created.
God truly works in mysterious ways. Just about three days ago, I found
out that Dan Fogelberg had
cancer by looking him up on the internet for the first time, wanting to
read his biography. My own
father died of cancer in 1990 similarly, as well, so I know the rugged
road. My heart and prayers
go out deeply and truly to the great Dan Fogelberg. He was a good songwriter, but to me more
importantly, a man of respect and love. I saw this in his love for his
father. "Kindness to a father
shall never be forgotten", it is written. May God rest his soul. ~
Michael B. Galaburri - Milford, Connecticut
Dan has touched my life for over 35 years. I have traveled far and wide
to
catch him in concert. I was fortunate enough to catch his last tour in 2003
in Biloxi, MS. His music has followed me through my life and the world has
truly lost a great songwriter, storyteller and singer. My condolences go
out to Jean. The world was a better place when Dan was allowed to touch our
lives and may he be at peace in the heavens today. ~

When I was a child I use to listen to the "Leader of the Band" over and
over. I loved that song and I used to sing along with all my heart. I had
forgotten this very emotional memory until today. That song brought me a lot
of joy and good memories. Thank you Dan. May God shine on your journey
forth. ~
Peter Gagnon NYC
I send my deepest sympathies to his family and friends as his music
left
lasting memories to those of us who appreciated his talent. When heavy
metal, disco and various other forms of music were emerging, Dan's
lyrics were gentle and profound. I graduated from college in 1979 and
every time since then that I have heard one of his songs it takes me back
to a time when I was young and free; free from all the adult worries
that come along with parenthood. I have shared his music with my
children, two of which are in college. Unfortunately, this generation
has has no performers whose messages affect the heart like Dan. Again,
let me extend my condolences and prayers during this time of grief. His
gentleness will be sorely missed. Sincerely ~ Marylou Ferrentino
Thanks Dan for all of the wonderful songs that have encouraged me and
helped me as a person. Songwriting is a special gift that is given to
only a few of those who can create and impact lives. Thru your songs you
have left a living legacy to many fans for a lifetime.
We will be surely "Missing You" ~
Mike F.
There is a special place in my heart for Dan's music, his song "Leader of the Band" is written on the strings of my heart for my own father who passed on, 14 years ago. But who he was and is, still amazes me and Dan's song is never far from me. Dan's music and voice quality were in a league of their own! My deepest sympathy. A fan for many years ~ mary ann
This morning when I opened my e-mail, I had messages from high school
friends, my college friends, and my best friend in Pittsburgh all telling
me that Dan has passed away. We were all shocked and saddened and
needed to reach out to one another. You see, we were all touched by his
passing because his music defined our college experience. His music was
played all the time. While I was in college (at the University of
Illinois where Dan also attended), even though I was struggling to get
by, I bought every one of his albums and attended as many concerts as I
could. His song, "Stars," is still one of my favorite all-time songs.
But, I was even more connected to Dan than my college friends because I
went to high school with him. I was just a freshman when he was a
senior, but I remember going to dances and events at the Expo Center and
listening to his band, The Coachmen.
I'm a teacher in Nashville, and after reading the e-mails this morning,
tears started flowing. I told my classes that I had to share some sad
news. I asked my students (who are high school age) if they knew who
Dan Fogelberg was. Over 2/3 of the class had listened to his music.
I told them my story and why Dan's passing had affected me so deeply. I
told them that Dan went to Woodruff High School-my alma mater and his.
I told them that his music defined my college years. I told them the
origin of the song "Leader of the Band," and told them what a beautiful
songwriter Dan was. They all were so compassionate and were saddened by
the news as well.
I just wanted you to know that so many of us are sharing in the grief of
Dan's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Jean and the rest of
his family and friends who will miss him so much. ~

To Dan Fogelberg; You will always be the Leader of the Band in our hearts. ~ Barbara Gilmer
I am truly saddened. Although not a personal friend of Dan Fogelberg, his music
was a constant companion for almost a decade. I believe it made me a thinker and helped shape who I am today. I hope that his family and close friends find comfort in this difficult time. I am truly sorry for your loss. ~

I am a life-long fan of Dan's. I had just purchased two of my favorite albums on cd last week, Captured Angel and Windows and Walls. I already have Nether Lands and Souvenirs. Everything I have of his was on lp so I needed to update so I could once again enjoy his beautiful music. His music touched me in so many wonderful ways.
I too was born in Peoria and had to move away to appreciate my home. I understand his love of Colorado and Maine. God Bless his family and dear friends. ~
A devoted fan from Illinois
You are so much a part of who we are. Thank you for your gift of music.
I was afraid this time would come, but had always hoped and prayed that Dan
would somehow beat this. I am truly devastated by the loss of someone who
has touched my life for so many years. He will be so terribly missed.
Godspeed to you Jean, and know that you are not alone in your grief. Be well
on your journey, Dan. ~ Kathy, Fremont, NE
My heart grieves at the same as it remembers you with joy. I could not have gotten through high school (1974-1977) without your music. The entire Souvenirs album put me to sleep every night back then. So for that you will ever live in my memories. I offer my sincere wishes for strength and peace to Jean and all your family and friends. You will be missed, but we will carry on with playing your music, and singing your songs (loudly!). Love ~ Ariana in Las Vegas
I grew up in Peoria and was always proud of a local boy doing well. Dan's
music has been woven through all of my adult life. His song, "Longer", was
sung by a friend at our wedding and remains one of our favorites. Whenever
we took a road trip and wanted some music for company, Dan's music was
always at the top of our list. We were fortunate to see him and Tim at a
concert in Phoenix, AZ in the early nineties and it remains one of our
favorite memories. May his family find comfort in knowing that Dan lived a
life which was worthwhile, meaningful and touched many, many people around
the world. We are certain Dan and his father are playing together for the
angels now. ~ Cheryl & Paul Wiley, Peoria, AZ
How shocked I was to hear of this terrible news. Dan, your music has
touched my life in so many ways. I'll never be able to put in words what
the song "Same Old Lang Syne" means to me. I will never forget you. God
Bless you and your family. ~ Kelley.
Such a great loss. I had moved from Illinois to Tacoma, Washington arriving there on my 25th birthday. Anytime I got homesick I would listen to "Illinois" and feel a kinship with the singer. A bright star has gone out and he will be missed. ~ Alicia (back in Illinois!!)
What an awesome artist and a wonderful human being. We were so blessed to have him on this earth for 56 years. I am sure he will be singing with the angels in heaven. I pray for his family for his wife. He will never be forgotten. When I heard it was like my past died too. His music so much a part of my life and his concerts were so magical and inspiring. Thank you God for Dan Fogelberg and for his legacy. ~ Linda Parenti
When I was young and greatly influenced by music, I listened and loved Dan's music. The funny thing is that even though I am much older the music sounds the same and bring me back to a place of warmth and great memories. My only regret is I didn't see him live. I wish his remaining family peace and only good memories. ~
Matt - Texas
My shock and surprise at the news of Mr. Fogelberg's passing are hard to
express. His music has helped me deal with loss in my life like the
death of my father. I have shared the words and music with my own
children over the years, knowing that they will benefit as I have. I am
so sorry that he is gone. ~
Chris
This world has been so truly blessed with such a magnificent spirit that is "Dan Fogelberg." He is without a doubt my favorite artist, marking milestones in my life with his poetic heartfelt masterpieces. Grieving is never easy, especially at this time of year, but I have no doubt that Dan will continue to walk the path of those he cherishes, heart to heart, loving them every step of the way! Thank you Dan ~ Connie
Dan...Godspeed sir. Your music and your life were an inspiration to me for
many years. You touched us in so many positive ways. I'll never forget
back in the early 80's on a ski bus trip to Lake Tahoe at a very late hour
and I was playing your music out loud. Numerous people commented to me on
how moving your music was. God Bless your wife Jean and the rest of your
family.
I have loved his music since the 70's and always bought his albums. When I converted to CD's I bought 6 & "Home Free" was one of those. We went and saw him about 4 years ago in Raleigh NC and he put on a great show. I was sorry to hear that he passed away. My thoughts are with his family & friends. ~ Connie Lynn-North Carolina
A legend such as you will never be forgotten. You have touched so many people's lives through your cunning, eloquent, and beautiful music. I've seen it in my friend's and dad's lives, as well as mine. Your music will never die, as it will strive on through the ages to touch those in need. ~ Andy Chow
I was heartbroken hearing the news today..I have been a huge fan since the mid seventies, even taped his album covers and photos to my college room walls!
When the phone rang today and it was my sister calling, I knew she was the only one in the world that would get it. In the mid 80's our dad died suddenly and I remember while planning his funeral we talked and realized that "Leader of the Band" meant so much to each other. We all were going to place something in his coffin and she wrote the words and put them in.
Back to today's phone call, when I got on the phone with her and said I cant believe you called, guess what was playing on the radio station as we spoke ...."Leader of the Band" - we both knew our dad is with us today. Dan thanks for sharing your words with us.
You will never know how much your music meant to me and Dad, I love you... ~
Katie, Vermont
Dan,
Thank you for sharing your soul through song with us. Thank you for being true to you creative vision
in the midst of commercial pressure. Thank you for the joy you have given me. Thank you for sharing
the gift. I am a better man and artist because of your music.
Thank you so.
To Dan's Family,
In April of 2000 I lost my wife to breast cancer. I miss her every day. As time has passed the pain
of the loss eases. But, the ache in your heart at your loved ones absent will never completely go
away. You might be thinking " if this guy is trying cheer me up he is doing a poor job." I want you
to know from another who has loved and lost what is normal and true.
The price of love is joy and the price of loving and losing that special one are fond memories that become treasures.
Be sure to tell your story don't hold it in. Share with others the greatness of your love for Dan
and his valiant fight. Be proud of your loyalty of staying by Dan's side and helping him wage his
war to live. Most of all grieve and give grief it's due. Dan through his fight and now his death has given you
a special gift and that is a new outlook of what life ease. You will never take life for granted ever again.
Things that once upset you will now seem unimportant. Life will have a new refreshing look and feel.
When you notice what I am saying is happening to you be sure to thank Dan and Thank God.
Once the pain eases there will be a day you rise like a Phoenix.
My prayers are with you at this difficult time and I hope for all of you brighter and happier days.
With sincere sympathy and appreciation ~
Jeff York
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dan's family at this time.
He was one of my favorite singers, I had the privilege of hearing him at
Red Rocks some years back.
He will truly be missed ~
David P. Truhler
This tears me up and I didn't even know Dan Fogelberg personally. But
his music has inspired me countless times and kept me going on many hard
days. My deepest sympathies to all his friends and family. Losing a
loved one is never easy. Losing a loved one that was obviously such a
neat person must even tougher. The world became a better place to live
thanks to Dan Fogelberg. I'm sure he is serenading the angels in Heaven
right now under the watchful eye of the Leader of the Band. Thanks Dan.
You will be missed. ~
Joe Hudson
I am listening to "Phoenix" right now and crying - Dan was the soundtrack to my high
school and college life - I can define certain relationships by Dan's songs. "Longer",
"Beggar's Game" and "Same Old Lang Syne" represent 3 different people and still pull at my
heart when I hear them. When I went through a terrible period of panic disorder, Dan's
tapes kept me calm - I am so saddened to hear the news. But his music has touched my life
and will always be with me. ~ Sue
Dan Fogelberg's contribution to the music world were so loved and appreciated by so many. He inspired me in life, love and music. His music was a
special part of my college years and the memories it invokes are precious to me. I
am so saddened to hear of his death. I pray for his family at this very sad
time. Please know how much he was loved and adored. ~ Mary Ann Kalorian-Zychowicz,

I felt the passing of Dan Fogelberg as I listened to his music December 16th...driving to work. ...and the news confirmed it this morning. I experienced the need to reach out to him and thank him His music is in my heart. My prayers to those closest to him who have surely lost an angel.
December 16th is also Beethoven's Birthday. The music endures. A fan ~ Susan
I cried when I first heard "Leader of The Band". I cried when I first
heard "Same Old Lang Syne". "Longer" is my wife of 26 years and my song. I
cried today when I learned Dan died. ~ Tom - Indianapolis, IN
Dear Jean, I was shocked to hear about Dan. He has been such a part of my life,
with never meeting him. I feel a loss.
I can't imagine what you are going through. I will pray for you and your family. We all loved him so much. God bless ~ Lisa
No words can express my sadness. My life has been so blessed, since "Home Free" and "Souvenirs" came out. I was so blessed to see you at "Taft Theatre" in Cincy,1974 or 5. Beautiful cannot describe your music. You have always been one of my top 3 singer/songwriters. I will play a song in your honor tonight at the Louisville Contra Dance. God Bless You ~ Rick Edwards, Louisville
My thoughts and prayers are with Dan, his family and his friends.

A very sad day, indeed. Were it that each of us could make such a magnificent contribution to others through song! We'll miss you Dan.
~ Rob S. Toronto, Canada
Dear Jean,
No words can express our sadness in hearing of your loss. My husband and I met in the early 70's and married in 1975; and if our 32 year love story could've been set to music, it would've been Dan's beautiful voice and words playing through the years in the background. He never knew us and yet he seemed to us as an old friend that knew us all too well by the words of his touching songs. The world can't begin to know the personal pain you're going through, but please know that millions are grieving the loss of our gifted and dear friend. His loss on earth is heaven's gain this day. We'll be praying for your strength in the days ahead. ~
