My condolences to Dan's family.
Dan will be missed immensely.
His music was a part of me and will live forever. ~
Tom Christopher
There is no way to convey the extent to which his music touched me and
warmed my heart. When he sang, even on a live album, it felt like a
bunch of old friends sitting around a dorm room, listening to great
music. In Judaism, there is a belief that we live our lives in order to
touch others, in order to make the world a better place and, in the end,
if we are remembered when we go, we have lived a good life. Dan
Fogelberg lived a good life!
I feel like I have lost a friend. ~
Steve Schwartz
Dan was the first artist I discovered on my own as a teen in high school and
was not influenced by other's opinion of what was good. I instantly loved his
melodies and lyrics when I played "Home Free" for the first time back in the
early '70's. I also fell in love for the first time about then and will
always associate his music and learning about love at the same time. Seeing
him in concert whenever he came to the Motown area was a must. Like most
people I changed and my tastes changed but waking up to one of Dan's
melodies and then hearing of his passing stirred my emotions and took me
back to my age of innocence again, if only for a little while. Thanks for
all of the great memories and you will always be fondly remembered by me. ~
Ken, Laguna Beach
So very sad to hear today of Dan's passing at such a young age. His wonderful
words and music touched so many people's hearts. "Same Old Lang Syne" is a favorite
all time song of mine. Sincere wishes to his wife and family,he will be greatly missed. ~ Alan Jack, Newcastle ,England.
Dan's songs touched my heart many times over the past 30 some years.
I was lucky to see him live in Detroit and at the Toledo Zoo. What a talent. What a loss.
Thanks for sharing your gift. May your spirit soar.
My condolences to Jean and all the folks who loved him. ~ Mike T.
Loved Dan's lyrics, music, and beliefs. I feel like I have lost a good friend. Rest in peace and thanks for the music. ~ John McNeely
Our sincerest condolences on the loss of a great songwriter who touched many
lives in a beautiful way. We will remember him always.
I cried when I learned of Dan's passing. I honestly cannot remember the
last time I cried...Dan's music meant so much to me in such an
extraordinary, personal way. My heart is very heavy. My most heartfelt
condolences to his lovely, lovely wife. America lost a legend in Dan's
passing. ~
Douglas W. Bechler
Dan's music and lyrics have changed my life. Since I come from a long line of
musicians, "Leader of the Band" rang a true song in my life. But the song that REALLY changed me was "Run for the Roses."
I've been a horse fan all my life. My mid-life crisis came in the form of an Arabian horse. I now own five beauties, of all breeds and colors.
My involvement with the race horse, Barbaro, sent me revisiting Dan's song "Run for the Roses," and I CAN'T listen to it without crying.
God bless all of you who knew and miss Dan Fogelberg. He was truly a genius and touched millions. His songs will live on in everybody whom he reached with his music. ~
Barb Beck,
Glendale, AZ
As someone once said though the song is over the melody carries on. ~ Sid Morton
Heaven will be a better place just to have Dan's music added to the choir of
angels. Oh, how I will miss you my friend.
I don't remember when your songs were not a part of my life and I am 61
years old. So much of your music seemed to evolve as I did and strike a
chord within me. I am happy you are at peace and free from pain now. To
your family I can only say. you were fortunate indeed to know and love
such a gifted and blessed man. You will be missed Dan, but we know you
will enjoy your freedom as much as we will continue to enjoy and cherish
what you have left behind. ~
Pam Johnson,
Hilmar, California
I'm sure I am not alone when I say that Dan's music has touched my life in so
many ways.
Being a teenager in the 70's...I grew up listening to his songs. It would never
be Christmas without hearing 'Same Old Lang Syne'...and then, of course, 'Leader of the Band'. I
don't think there is another song that touches my heart so much.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Dan's family as we have lost one of the world's most
creative artist of our times. God Bless you Dan and your family...you will be missed. ~
Charisse Westfall, Nashville
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Dan. I grew up listening to his music and now my own children love listening to it. The world will never be the same without him.
My heartfelt condolences to his family. May you find comfort knowing he is with his beloved Dad.
"The leader of the band is"...gone, with my deepest regret. Godspeed. Your words, music and the memories you created will live in my mind and heart forever. Thank you Dan.
I have lost a friend. ~ Lynn
I was so saddened to hear the news of Dan's passing. To Jean, my deepest sympathy. The whole world grieves with you. I am a survivor of child abuse. Dan's music touched me in a profound way. When I was hurting, "Nether Lands" took me far beyond myself, my pain, and my broken heart, to a world where "lavender wings" softly carried me to a better place inside my mind. I have honored Dan in my heart ever since then, by being a huge fan of his music and introducing it to many friends. Dan's music taught me about a love that I never knew as a child, and it gave me hope and something to look forward to as I grew up. "Longer" was my wedding song - I chose it as almost more of a tribute to him than to my beloved groom! Dan's music touched my life, and as such, so did the man himself. He will be sorely missed. I owe a great deal of my healing to him. Rest in peace, gentle friend. ~ Julie in Canada
Your words and music give us comfort. Your absence is felt. What a gift your
life was for us who listened and for those who have yet to discover. Thank
you Dan Fogelberg! ~ Jeffrey Cantrell, Seattle
I've been a fan of Dan Fogelberg's since college in the late 70's and
have been under the spell of all his beautiful music since then. I was
very fortunate to see Dan when he came to Rochester, NY about 10 years
ago. A memory I will keep forever. I wish his family and friends much
comfort in knowing he was a blessed soul while we had him and heaven is
now more blessed in having him there.
Sincerely ~
Kim A. Brosius
Dan's music has been an integral part of my life. I started listening
to him in my early 20s and continue to listen to his music in my late
40s. His music has given me joy, peace and many happy moments . I had
the pleasure of seeing him in concert several times over the past 25
years, and his music always left me wanting more.
He will be deeply missed. He was truly one of the greatest songwriters
ever.
May he rest in peace. ~
Annette Roth,
Hanover, PA
I was a fan on Dan Fogelberg's music back in the 70s and 80s. I found comfort in many of the songs. Sadly, I lost track of his career and I regret that. His music touched me and I will miss that, but remember him fondly. His music and his spirit live on. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. ~
Brian Kelley,
Portage, Michigan
I am deeply saddened. His music was always there for me, better than an
understanding friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jean and
family. ~ John
Dan made weekends at the Red Herring something to look forward to. Listening to Dan,
Berkow, Swinnerton,
Cohen, Bradshaw.... in a jam session was a phenomenon to savor. My audio tapes from the
Red Herring have
all disintegrated (I think I still have at least one bootleg album around somewhere), but
those early songs and times will
always remain special and unique. "To the Morning" was my mantra for years and still
reminds me of the aching
longing of so long ago. Jean, my heartfelt sympathies go out to you, the lady Dan no
doubt was looking for.
Peace to Dan and all his loved ones. ~ J. Takahashi Powers, Los Gatos, CA
"There are thorns on the cactus tree, there are thorns on the rose; There are thorns in the heart of me that nobody knows." My heart aches terribly today for the loss of man who graced this world with not only unimaginable talent, but for a beautiful & unique soul who truly made this world a better place. Why God has taken him so young I will be sure to ask one day, but will be forever grateful that my life was blessed with his presence at all. Bless you Dan, for everything you were & will ALWAYS be. ~
Lori Heikkinen,
Minnesota
It is something to have one message of your life reach so many. I know
so many of his did just that. But for me it is that one message that
endures and shall always remain with me. I, like him, felt a profound
loss at the passing of my father and although unlike some the poetic
words do find there way through me, and yet I am so very far from the
courage it takes to share so openly the words that manage to bring to
light the feeling locked within. So, thank you Dan for that message of
understanding and allowing me to know I can open my heart to all that
only seems to be so very sad.
Dear Family,Very sorry to hear of the passing of Dan. A very soft and elegant person. I grew up with Dan's music. It will be etched in my mind and heart forever. ~ Dr Joel S. Cohen, Akron, Ohio
I grew up listening to Dan's music. He had the most soothing voice in the
world. My favorite song was "Same Old Lang Syne" .I love that song. Godspeed brother!
Friends,
I never did have the pleasure of seeing Dan in concert but his music is a living testimony to his gifts of words and music.
"Same Old Lang Syne" is playing as I write - a magnificent song among many magnificent songs from an artist of lasting brilliance.
Good thoughts ~
John MacKenna, Ireland
My prayers go out to Dan's family especially his wife in this time of
sorrow. His music was an inspiration for young and old alike.
Bless you Dan. ~
Colleen Laginess
I can't tell you how sorry I am to lose such a gifted singer songwriter. I
have been listening and enjoying Dan's music for years. I am so saddened and
feel like I lost a member of my family. I will dedicate the next couple of
days to listening to Dan's music only. Rest in peace, my dear man. You will
always be in our hearts. ~ Janice Foti
I am a fan of the music of Dan Fogelberg and found comfort in his
words."Leader of the Band" brings back many fond memories of my Dad who we lost
in 2006. I hope the words and music of Dan Fogelberg bring the same
comfort and happy thoughts to his family and friends.
There will now be some great concerts in heaven.
Rest in peace Dan.
Sincerely ~
Rob Lewis
Dan's song, "Longer" is the song my husband and I call "our" song. It so wonderfully expresses the feelings we have for each other and the life we've shared for over 28 years. When I heard the news of Dan's death this morning, I pulled out his "Greatest Hits" CD and listened to it all day. I thank God that Dan was part of my life in his songs. I'm already "Missing You". God bless you and thank you for the beautiful music you gave us. ~
Cheryl Burnett,
Humble, TX
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I am so sorry for your loss.
The gift of Dan will live on forever in his music. Of that, we can be grateful. ~
Laura Butler
As Dan Fogelberg joins The Great Gig in the Sky. His early passing
surely was not Part of the Plan. God Bless Dan's family. I'm sure he was
a real good guy.
Peace Dan ~
Bill Wright, Westfield, Mass
1972 - I was 13 and stumbled upon "Home Free". I played that album for all to hear. Every album that came out was in my collection the day it was released. Yes, without a doubt, I was a Dan Fan. I caught several live shows over the years. I remember the show in Tempe, AZ back in February '82 (Innocent Age Tour) and twice in Milwaukee back in the 90's. Dan's music is what I found infectious. I know others got into the lyrics.
November 2007, I ordered "The First Christmas Morning" and the DVD "Greetings From The West". I had all the albums and CDs Dan has put out the past 30 years except these two. Saturday, December 15th, I put all 4 discs in the CD player from the Portrait Collections and hit "random" and for over 3 hours listened to some of the finest music ever recorded. Woke this morning with my cup of coffee and caught a blip of the day's headlines as they scrolled across the bottom of the television. Still half asleep, did I see what I thought "Dan is going out on tour..." (I discovered the news of Springsteen touring through the area the same way just a few weeks ago.) Then I saw the news scroll again.. My heart sank. A feeling came over me I can't describe.
After reading all of the messages here, I know I am not alone.
Your music shaped and molded me from the seventh grade to just this past weekend! Let's not be sad but go forward with our memories of Dan's music, lyrics and passion for all he stood for. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all - family, friends, fans and musicians everywhere. ~ Gary, Green Bay, WI
God bless a fine writer and singer of songs. His hit "Leader of the Band" was very special to me and my brothers and sisters. Our dad, who dies in 1958 at the age of 49, was a band leader at St. Michael's Catholic Orphanage in Hopewell, NJ in the 1920's. He loved music. Thanks Dan. If you meet my dad in heaven, sing him your song - he will love it. Semper Fi! ~
SGTMAJ J. T. RANDOW
Our prayers are with you and family. God Bless.
I know the angels are winging in harmony with him as we speak. Thanks
Dan for touching so many lives with you wonderful music that I grew up
with from high school to now. You will be so missed. ~
MB
He was my hero.
God bless you Jean.
I grew up listening to Dan and his wonderful music. Just the other day I
thought of him and some of his songs and went to the website to learn he was
sick. Just so sad to have a learned and lost a wonderful memory maker. He
was such a wonderful singer songwriter. My heart is sad. He will be
missed greatly. ~
Janie,
Charlotte NC
The news of Dan's passing is truly sad. I thoroughly enjoyed his music
throughout the years and had the pleasure of hearing him live in Minneapolis
back in the 80's. What an enormous talent, that surely will be missed.
He was a musical inspiration, not only for myself but surely others. And..in
a world surrounded by meaningless music, thank God his music will live on
forever.
Goodbye Dan,
Thanks for getting me through the rough patches. ~
Reginald M. Adkins
Dan, dear Dan...this morning a friend emailed me about your passing and I was stunned and deeply saddened. Like many, I felt a great interpersonal connection with you through your music. I am also sad because it had always been a dream to see you in concert, but since cancer stole you from us at an early age, that will never be. No artist has ever been able to capture the human experience in their music so perfectly as you have. As a musician, you have always been an inspiration, and always will be my favorite artist. Thank you for sharing you gift, you will always remain in our hearts. ~Steve
I will never forget the great music that he has left us that will live
on
forever. May the peace that passes all understanding be with you during
this time. Your family is in our prayers.
~ Paul Michael Cretella
Beginning in 1972 I found myself listening to the early works like Home Free and Souvenirs and formed an immediate bond to the stories Dan told; his lyrics and his melodies. Dan was one of those artists who touched your heart with his music and spoke to some of your deepest feelings and emotions. In over 35 years of being a fan, and following him through the various "transformations" his music went through I always found that he remained true to himself and his fans. Today I feel a large void in the world and feel I have lost a true "friend" and kindred soul!
Dan Fogelberg ... THE Leader of the Band ... never to be forgotten!
Peace. ~
John Huffman,
Wichita, KS
So many times we reflect upon our past and music is one of the few vehicles
that can instantaneously bring us back to a special moment, a moment that
lives inside us and seems to only get truly unleashed by a special song.
Dan, your music has so many of those songs and so much of your music
unleashes those memories for me. It is hard not to think about the 1970's
and 1980's and not have one of your songs playing in the background. I was
revived at each of your concerts that I attended and am saddened that I will
not be able to see you again. However, I am very grateful that I was
touched so many times by your music and will always hold your music as a
prize in my collection. My very best to your friends and family. ~
Donald J. Larnard,
North Hampton, NH
Dear Jean,
I am so sorry to see that Dan is gone, but he is really not gone. He will live forever
in our hearts, thoughts and our souls. His music changed lives, brought happiness, and
smiles. I will never forget the two concerts from years gone by.
I am happy for the time that you and Dan spent together. I am sure that you brought many
smiles to his face as he did to yours. Dan will be smiling down from Heaven, serenading
you with the breeze from the ocean and the mountains, bringing you fresh flowers every
spring and summer. Dan will not be forgotten. He will live on in all things around you.
My deepest sympathy to you, your family and musical fans. ~
Chris Fiedler,
Milan, Illinois
I just had to add my note to this list of condolences having been a Dan fan since Souvenirs & having seen him in concert every chance I get -13 times in Chicago & Los Angeles. Dan's passing has made an already blue Xmas for me even bluer, deep blue. His unique voice as a musician & artist is one in a lifetime and will never be replaced by anyone else. The loss is great. For years, Dan has inspired us through our youth & young adulthood, but now we have lost a guide & therefore, feel more alone in the music world. Yes, we have the old records & memories for which we are grateful, but this already sad world has become a sadder place without Dan Fogelberg. Here's where the saying "you will be missed" really means something. Our condolences to Jean & the Fogelberg family. You were very fortunate to have known this great man personally. ~ Art M.-Los Angeles
Just heard this and I'm very upset. Dan was an awesome talent and could do anything. He was never as appreciated as I thought he should be. Hopefully with the new areas of medicine, such as stem cell research, we can stop this crime from taking any more of the quality people. My brother had prostate cancer and survived, but not my cousin, Ray. I get checked regularly. What a sad day for rock music and the world in general. And I never got to see him in concert. Down the road, Dan, down the road. ~ Mr. Daniel J. Monico
It was with great sadness that I read of Dan's passing yesterday. We
have lost another gentle warrior for the environment and the human race.
His music will live on for generations to come and bring comfort and
peace to many. That is about as great a legacy as you can leave. God
bless you Dan and thank you for all you have given. ~ Peter Hussmann
How do you begin to say goodbye to a legend? First
with
tears. Today is filled with such sorrow, it is unbearable.
Tomorrow, will be more tears, but some smiles as we reminisce about
those amazing moments that were lived before the backdrop of Dan
Fogelberg. Next year, you will be with us as we continue to glimpse
into our past, and find that you are so tightly woven into. Thank you
for amazing memories that could not have been written as beautifully
without you......our Leader of the Band. ~
Deena Spradlin
I just wanted to express my most sincere sympathies for the loss of your
husband and a great great artist. Dan Fogelberg was a household word when I was
a teenager. My brother and I listened to him all the time. And as a
singer, I have sung many of his songs with pleasure.
The lyrics to so many such as "Leader of the Band" and "Along the Road" have
meant so much to me in my life. Thank you for sharing your husband with us for
so many years. He will be missed! ~
Peggy Wentz
Dan was one of my very favorite singer/song writers. I'm so sorry he's gone. ~
Doug Stewart,
Clinton, Iowa
I wish to convey my deepest condolences to Mr. Fogelberg's family.
He will be truly missed by all.
I only wish that you truly knew how much your music and lyrics meant to
so many people. Your music came from your heart and soul, that is why it
touched so many people.... it was real. I pray that your songs live for
many years to come where others can be touched the way I was. Maybe,
you leaving us so young was God's Plan in helping people understand the
terrible things that cancer does. May we see the blessings we all have.
Thank you for your love of music that glowed so brilliantly.
A fellow U of I student, and a life long fan. ~
Debbie Skonieczny
Thank you so much for the goose-pimples.
Your talent is timeless, as is your memory. God speed. ~

To Jean, and the rest of the Family of Dan Fogelberg:
I just read the news about Dan, and my heart goes out to all of you. Please accept my warm, heartfelt condolences.
I'm 43, and when I was about 10, I was introduced to Dan's music by my uncle, who encouraged me to play, and I'm sure is also very sad about Dan's passing. I heard a lot of Dan during those early years, and when my appreciation for his music increased with maturity, I could say without a doubt that he was one of the most gifted artists to ever live. I still marvel at his finger-picking style and beautiful melodic compositions, both musically and lyrically.
I mentioned that I'm 43 for another reason. Prostate cancer seems to kill men younger and younger. A guy who led a band I played in about 20 years ago died of prostate cancer at 59 last April. I am going to heed the warning for men at 40 to get checked out.
I immediately thought about how sad you must be, and put my dear wife in that position for a moment. I want to do as much as possible to keep that from prematurely ending my life, and be around for her.
Dan is now in God's memory and I pray that you will all find the strength you need to live your lives, even in Dan's absence. Once again, my condolences, and please take care,
Sincerely ~
Mark Underdahl
Goodbye Dan. You gave us some beautiful music to soothe the heart and soul.
Say hello to the other legends after you pass through those pearly gates.
Dan, Thank you for the wonderful music through the years. You inspired me and made me think. Your songs bring back wonderful memories of a time long past. Your music and words helped me through many difficult times in my life, each song touching me in it's own special way. I will greatly miss you but your music will live on forever. in my heart and soul. May you rest in peace. May God be with you and guide you home. ~ Lori, KS.
I was listened to Full Circle all weekend as I drove around in my
car
preparing for the holidays, and was shocked when I heard the news. What
a sadness I feel to learn of Dan's passing. I am at work and trying not
to cry. He has blessed the world with his gift of song, his music and
words always so full of emotion for me. I was introduced to his music at
age 13, used a line from "Part of the Plan" for my H.S. yearbook quote, my
cousin played "Longer" at my wedding, sang his songs while rocking my
babies to sleep and have been lucky enough to enjoy him in concert at
least 6 times. He will remain my forever favorite for the ways he has
touched my life.
My prayers go to your lovely wife and your family at this time.
I am a fan of your music since I first heard you in 1975.
I hope that you will be united with your dad in heaven, and spend
eternity jamming with all of the giants in the industry.
I am glad that I heard your music, and I am happy that you were not
alone at the end of your journey.
God bless ~
Ann Chuff-Osborne
I am so sad. Dan Fogelberg's music was such a source of pleasure and solace for this lonely freshman boy back in 1972. 'To the Morning' is such a achingly beautiful song.
I know it's a cliche. But he lives with us in our hearts forever. His music is a part of us and our consciousness. I am so very grateful I knew of his music and I feel like I knew him personally.
My condolences to his family.
Know that people are thinking of you.
I began listening to Dan's music back in 1977 while in high school. I
owned every album he created and loved them all. His music and lyrics
were so powerful. While most of my friends were listening to hard rock,
I quietly listened to DF. Please play again for all in the next place.
My husband was diagnosed just this year at age 50 with prostate cancer.
I feel so fortunate his was detected early. Rest in peace Dan...I'll
forever hold you in my heart. ~ PAS, Madison WI
At the end of a relationship when I was in my early 20s, I was feeling
more
angry than sad. I wanted to feel sad, to mourn the loss of this love, but I
was too bitter. I decided that the right song could cut through the anger
that was protecting my heart and let me feel the emptiness. So I sat down
one day alone in my room and "auditioned" a number of songs, waiting for one
that would touch me so deeply it would make me cry. "Same Old Lang Syne" was
the winner. To this day, more than 20 years later, the song still reminds me
of that girl. But in a good way. What makes that song work is that it's
honest; there's no bravado or false sentiment. It's about real people and
real feelings. And that's what I needed then. Thank you for that for many
other important moments and memories, such as singing "The Sand and the
Foam" over and over until my colicky infant daughter in my arms went to
sleep. God bless and RIP. ~
Jason
Dan was one-of-a-kind. His work is what encouraged me to expand my playing from
total
hard rock, to acoustic ballads. It is immeasurable to the extent he will be missed by
myself and the public at large. My condolences to his family and close friends. I must say I was very surprised at the news of Dan's passing. As I was unaware that he
was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I myself was diagnosed on May 16, 2007 with stage 3
advanced prostate cancer. Gleason 7 and PSA 88.8. I finished radiation 3 weeks ago and
have been concerned about my prognosis. Dan was only 1 year older than me.
The deepest sympathy for your loss. His music was a big part of my life as it was to so many others. My mother had very few tapes when I was a little girl so we would listen to his greatest hits over and over. It's still one of my favorites. God bless you. ~ Casey Taylor, Knoxville, TN
My husband & I grieve the loss of this beautiful poet.
We played his song "A Love Like This" at our wedding in 1994.
We will always think of Dan when we see a beautiful sunset or hear his music in the sounds of nature.
Thank you, Dan. ~
Jim & Michelle Gugin
I will desperately miss Dan.....I thank God I have his music. My all-time favorite song was "Same Old Lang Syne." Jean, thanks for supporting Dan in all he did. You are truly a great woman. I am not scared now of getting myself checked now that I'm getting up in this age range. Thank you Dan for all that you gave us. ~ Robin.....Austin, TX
To Dan's wife Jean and his family my deepest sympathies. Dan's songs especially "Same Old Lang Syne" give me the chills and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear them. Reading Dan's Bio, he lived a fulfilling live with his family and friends and will be greatly missed. ~ Lori
Dan's music touched me at a formative age, and is still a treasure to
me.
My deepest sympathies to his wife Jean and his family.
I have no way of properly conveying the way I feel right now. I was first introduced to Dan Fogelberg when I was dating my wife...5 years ago. Though I am young, the songs Dan wrote were songs that have made an incredible impression on who I am. When I found out of Dan's passing this morning via email, I was suddenly filled with tears. God be with you Dan, know that there are many people who I know that will pray for you and your family. You are great musician...one of a kind. Goodbye Seraphim return to your place amongst God's truest; until the day I hear you voice again.
Hello to the immediate family of Dan Fogelberg. This day is a little less bright no matter how clear the sky is and how
big the sun. The bright lights in my surfboard shaping room seem a little dim.
I know that many share in the loss of such a talented, poetic songwriter. I
cannot help but to go back to the early 70's when the radio played " As the
Raven Flies" and I had to know who the artist was. The rest is history. Dan
Fogelberg was and is such a legacy in so many fans' lives. We grew up with him
through our teen years and into adulthood. The needle on my old phonograph
could have worn completely through the album as I truly played it that many
times over and over, never tiring of it. Singing along with every memorized
word with a smile on my face. Hoping to someday meet a man that I so very much
admired.
Thank You so very much Mr. Dan Fogelberg for becoming so special a
musician to all us adoring fans. Your music will live always as your legacy. Your
seemingly unending talents will continue to give many something to love and
hold onto especially in times of trouble. There have been so very few to grace
the music world with such beautiful composition as the poet you were. I will meet you someday soon and we will have eternal friendship as we
hold our faith in God and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ our Savior. A free concert in heaven featuring Dan Fogelberg and
everyone gets a front row seat. Man, I wouldn't miss that ! God Bless the Dan
Fogelberg family. Sincerest Condolences ~ Brian Fort, Pompano Bch., FL
It was with great sadness that I read of Dan's passing. I have always loved
his music, which has touched me in so many different ways. My wedding gift
to my husband was tickets to Dan's concert at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, NC,
in 2003. We enjoyed his performance immensely and it meant the world to us
that we were able to share in his wonderful music together. It was shortly
thereafter that Dan was diagnosed with cancer. My husband and I kept tabs
on his progress by visiting his website. When there was no update for quite
some time, we both feared the worst. We were just talking about Dan last
week and wondering how he was doing. When we read the sad news this
morning, we both wept. It was amazing to us how someone that we never met
had such an effect on our emotions. He will be sorely missed, but he will
live on through his music. May God Bless and keep his wife and loved ones
during this most difficult time, and always. Most respectfully ~ Renee
You were loved but now you will be missed.
Dan, you have come FULL CIRCLE. Sleep in heavenly
peace. ~
Hugh B
The world is a sad place today, but Dan will live on through his
beautiful and timeless music. My deepest condolence to Jean and the
rest of Dan's family. I know that you have many, many wonderful memories
to bring you through the next few days and weeks of mourning. Please
know we are all thinking of you. ~
Ann
Thank you for your music dear Dan. You will leave a large void. My thoughts and my prayers are with you and your family ~ Christian
I was raised listening to Dan. When I was a baby, I would wake up at night and my dad would play his Dan Fogelberg albums to soothe me back to sleep. As I got older, my father and I would sit in our living room and listen to album after album of his music. When I heard the news today, I realized that there is not one memory that doesn't somehow include Dan's music. From Christmas, to road trips; birthdays to graduation, even my wedding (longer was played as a surprise to me), all of these are memories that I will cherish, thanks to Dan and his music and his passion for perfection. May God bless his family and comfort them in their time of need. Thank you Dan for sharing your music with the world. You will be missed. ~

Dear Jean and family,
My deepest sorrows go to you and your family at this time. The Dan Fogelberg legacy will stand the test of time. I too am a high school band director like Dan's father and so "Leader of the Band" has always been a significant song for me in my life. His music has greatly influenced my own musical career. "Heart Hotels", "Leader of the Band", "Run for the Roses", "Hard to Say", "Longer", and "Make Love Stay", just to name a few are tracks that I hold dear to my heart.
I pray that you will find peace in this time, a peace that can only come from our loving savior Jesus Christ. In him we can do all things. Dan's music will stay alive in our hearts and in our homes.
In Christ ~

Hi - My name is Erin Forbes Burckhard, and I grew up
in
Peoria, Illinois in the 60's. Dan and his family lived a few streets away,
and when all the neighborhood kids would get together, we would play
kick-the-can, and I remember Dan playing along as well. He was more my
older sister's age (54), but I do remember him and have grown up listening
and being a huge fan of his music. He was truly one of a kind and his
musical talents were by far one of the most talented and original I have
ever known. At my wedding in 1989, our first dance as husband and wife was "Longer". Many relatives were at the event and we reminisced about him
then.
I keep in touch through the Peoria Journal Star on-line, and learned of his
battle with cancer a few years back. I am so sorry for your loss. He was
such a handsome, talented, kind man, and will be missed by all who knew him.
I was shocked when I heard the news on the tv this morning. I will always
remember him fondly. What an incredible talent.
My condolences to his wife. Sincerely ~
Erin Forbes-Burckhard,
Canby, Oregon
The last time I saw Dan in concert - Bass Hall in Ft Worth around 2003 - he closed the show with a tribute to George Harrison. I have to believe that in the coming days and weeks, many musicians will be paying similar homage to Dan. He deserves that and more. He will be missed. ~ TS in Arlington Tx
Your musical contribution was amazing! Thank you and may God bless you
and your family!
~ William P.
Hello,
I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dan Fogelberg. He was an inspiration to many and lived his life in an exemplary manner.
I am the first cousin of Bob Dylan, and I think he was one of the most underrated songwriters of our time. He truly moved me with his song, "Same Old Lang Syne". It was a masterful piece that caught my attention the first time I heard it and that feeling returns every year when the song is trotted out at Christmas time.
We will all miss Dan very much, but are better for having been able to experience his music and his love of the environment. ~
Steve Zimmerman
Dan, what can I say. I discovered your music in the middle seventies when I went away to college and will never forget it. Your songs are deeply planted in my memories. I am 52 and battling the same disease in the advanced stage. I am enjoying a drug holiday currently and then back to the hormone therapy again. I know how you felt as those drugs sucked some of the physical joy out of your life. I will think of your music when it comes for my time to stand. I will not forget you. ~
Mike
How saddened I was to hear this morning that Dan had lost his fight. Just yesterday I
had heard "Same Old Lang Syne" on the radio and thought, "I wonder how Dan is doing?" By
then, his light had been extinguished. I had the privilege of seeing Dan in concert
back in the early 80"s when he did his acoustic tour...just Dan, the guitar and piano.
Unbelievable! I will always be grateful I got to see him in person. What a loss to
all of his fans. I pray you will find some solace in knowing just how many lives he
touched through the years. His gift of music and lyrical content will never leave us. ~ Paula, Pittsburgh
In Dan's own words - and wise ones I have quoted many times:
Once in a vision
I came on some woods
And stood at a fork in the road.
My choices were clear yet I froze with the fear
Of not knowing which way to go.
One road was simple acceptance of life
The other road offered sweet peace.
When I made my decision my vision became my release.
He never gives the 'answer' in the lyrics - leaving it open to each who sing or read or live the lyrics. Truly a wise and intelligent artist.
I am an artist also - and his poetry and apparent understanding of things beyond this world were insightful and spiritual. Go read the lyrics to 'Nexus'. He's been to where he is now many times before. This was an easy transition for him. Sadly his family, friends and fans are not so fortunate.
I can only hope that someday I could create memories that affect millions of lives in positive ways. His was a life truly well lived - even in such a relatively short time as the 56 years he was 'here'.
One of my greatest pleasures at one of his concerts was seeing his father at a Halloween concert in Chicago back in the 80's - Dan's glowing introduction of him - and then the entire band donning pairs of the old 'big nose and glasses' and launching into playing 'Rock and Roll Band' by The Moody Blues. It was as much fun for the band as it was for the audience.
My most sincere condolences go out to family and friends on his passing. ~
Jay Allen
Godspeed, Dan. Thank you for sharing the gift of your music with us.
~ Wendy & John
I, like so many others, have listened since the beginning, but never realized how much your music was a part of my life until you left us. My heart goes out to Jean and any other family members. I guess Heaven needed a new "Leader of the Band". ~
Rose Baker,
Rock Hill, South Carolina
My deepest sympathy to Jean for your loss. Until all of those who knew Dan and
all of those who hear his beautiful voice in song are gone, his spirit will
remain with us. Godspeed Dan. ~ Sue
My heart was saddened with the news of Dan's passing. I have been a
huge fan since college in the '70s. His music got me through some rough
times. I know he will live on through his music. ~
Mike,
Riverside,CA
I was heartbroken to hear the news. My heart goes out to you for your loss. I learned to write music because of Dan. I love to play music because of Dan. Myself and the rest of the world has lost a great man. God bless, and may he rest in the most peaceful way. Thanks for so much. ~ Edward
You've left us too soon, but have left a legacy
and touched the hearts of all who heard you.
God Speed, Dan. ~
Rob LeMay
Dan's music really touched me and reflected what was going on in my life at different
stages. I will wonder what music he might have still given the world but will love what
he produced all the more - it is a brilliant legacy. I am so sorry for your loss. ~
Judy in Fort Collins
I grew up in Durango, Colorado and discovered Dan's music when I was sixteen in
the seventies. His music and lyrics helped shape and influence my life through
high school, college and meeting and marrying my husband of 25 years. My first
gift ever to my then-boyfriend was a Dan Fogelberg 8 track tape! We were very
lucky to have seen him in concert; the best one was at Fort Lewis College in
Durango with Dan, a piano, and several guitars. That's it. It was awesome. As soon as I heard of his passing I immediately shared this with my husband and sons. We are all so saddened by the loss. Two of my sons are in college and one is in high school. They all grew up hearing his music. Even though they are into metal and hard rock, they continue to listen to him and recognize the genius of his songwriting. I'm so happy to have passed this on to them and know Dan's music will continue to touch their lives and many others for generations. My deepest condolences to you Jean and the rest of the family. ~ Linda, Glenwood Springs, Colorado
In 1974, I met Dan; but only through his music pressed in vinyl. I never
had the privilege of shaking his hand or seeing him in concert.
Nonetheless, since then, I have considered him a lifelong friend. His
talent has awed me. His lyrics and music have become a permanent part of
me. Rest in peace, Dan, and God bless. ~
Rick Faulkner
As a star shines brightly for many years after it's extinguished, Dan's star will continue to shine brightly on the lives and times he's touched so deeply. As words did not come easily when the man ran into his old girlfriend in the grocery store, I too am at a loss to adequately express what I feel about his passing.
I cannot express the loss that I feel at Dan's passing. His music affected
me so deeply. I cannot imagine my life without Dan's songs. I play guitar
and have always enjoyed playing many of Dan's songs. I saw him in concert
on multiple occasions, and was moved to tears while listening to him
perform. His music will live on and give joy to many for years to come.
My condolences to his family and friends. I feel as though I have lost a
friend as well. ~ Allen Joslin
My heartfelt condolences. I just had a Radical Prostatectomy December 10th. I am 43 years old and now
set on the Mission of cancer awareness - I would love to use Mr. Fogelberg's
letter - his succinct heartfelt words of advice need to be spread. I only
had a PSA because my Dad has prostate cancer. He is undergoing continuing
radiation and hormonal treatments since the Prostatectomy did not get all
the cancer.
God Bless you all! ~
Todd Spriggs
Mr. Fogelberg's music was as wonderful as ever and I feel like I grew up
on his wonderful words. His CD "High Country Snows" ranks on my top 10
list of all time favorite CD's. He had such a wonderful voice and was
such a great inspiration to me.
Rest in peace!! ~
Dana
To Jean and the Fogelberg family - You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I have a very heavy heart because of Dan's passing, but I know that his legacy of music will live on forever.
I fell in love with his music in the middle 70's, when I was in high school. I always felt like he was a friend, even though I was not fortunate enough to have met him, and was never able to see him perform in a live concert, he always held a special place in my heart and always will. He touched my soul in so many ways, and when nothing else seemed to help, his music got me through some of the darkest times of my life.
I hope that all of your special memories will give you comfort and peace during this difficult time.
Heaven now has a new and special angel.
Thank you for sharing his life and music with us.
May God bless your family now and always. ~

I just found out - it is Monday, the 17th.........now I know who was that man
that came to me in a dream last night. We sat and talked and talked in the
most beautiful place, on a porch somewhere with willow trees and bushes full of
honeysuckle blossoms that spilled over to where we were sitting.
Excerpts from "The Last Nail" are filtering through my mind right now.."So let the ashes lay where they will,
just say that once you used to know me.
One last time sing that old song we use to know,
but this time sing,
a little more slowly.
Fly away my sweet bird,
over the land,
take life for all the freedom you can.
But if you ever should need a man,
well, the offer still stands." -Dan Fogelberg.
Thank you, Dan, for making my sets some of the most fulfilling and rewarding
I have ever had the pleasure of performing. Thank you for teaching me how to
be a good songwriter. I will continue to play Aspen with all the respect and
admiration I can muster. You will be missed! I will keep Jean in my
heartfelt prayers. Your work has been an integral part of my life since 1976, I
couldn't have done it without you. Sharing your music with my classroom full of
SpEd students in the Carolina mountains formed a bond between us that only the
magic of our hearts could comprehend.
I am eternally your admirer. ~ Judith Morgan Wintringham,Summerfield, FL
Dan's music was wonderful.
My wife and I after hearing that he had died were very taken aback by
the news.
We grew up with him.
Now in our mid 40's, his death really brings home the taught that life
is truly finite and that we have to make the most out of every day.
God bless his family especially during the holiday season. He was an
inspiration to us all.
Respectfully ~
David Freudenrich and Tara Howey,
Pittsburgh, Pa
Dan, you made wonderful music. Your albums were like singles to me - start one from beginning to end. There was never any skipping around because each song flowed into the next. I have read through many of these condolences with tears in my eye. I share all of the sentiments expressed here. ~ Bruce Sage, Texas.
Some of my fondest memories of Nederland include having a wonderful neighbor by the name of Danny.
May you rest in peace and sing with the angles, my friend.
With heartfelt wishes and prayers to your family and friends. ~

To the entire Dan Fogelberg family:
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on your profound loss.
I have been a Dan Fogelberg fan since Nether Lands in 1977. I played that
album over and over and over, virtually wearing it out.
I had an opportunity to see Dan in concert in the late 70's at Concordia
College in Moorhead, Minnesota. I remember being a little taken back
when he showed up on stage with no back-up band or other musicians. It
was just Dan and his guitars. Let me tell you, it is still a concert
experience that I cherish. Dan played from his soul and his words were
sung with meaning and purpose. To my surprise, I was introduced to Dan's
good friend (or should I say his twin brother from a different mother)
Tim Weisberg. Tim came out with sax in hand and the two of them took
this concert to another level.
While I surely did not get to meet Mr. Fogelberg, I am very saddened by
his death. The music world lost a great musician, a great lyrical
craftsman, and a wonderful talent.
My life is richer because of his music and I will always be a fan.
May God Bless You All ~
James Boberg
Dan: "... and he gave to me a gift I know I never can repay." I certainly
can't say it any better than that.
My clock radio woke me up with your passing to the other side today. I
must sadly admit to you that I did not know you were sick. But, I
lingered beneath the covers and hummed several of your songs to myself,
a luxury I do not usually afford myself.
Your music was your unknown gift to me (like that humming this morning).
I can't begin to say how much the gift has meant to me over my life. "Since You've Asked" was played at my wedding (along with a Chet Atkins
piece and "Water Music"). I have sung the song at countless weddings
myself and always marvel at its simple, intrinsic beauty. As an
Illinois musician myself, your music touched a place in me that few
things touch. Please accept my belated thanks.
Wonderfully, your voice will live on as my souvenir. A souvenir of a
time in my life that was so incredibly filled with love, peace, joy and
friendship. A time that you were a part of, without even knowing it.
But, now you do - and I write this in the first person because I want
you to know it and believe that you do.
To your wife, family and friends: you are in my prayers. May your
sadness be soft and short. Maybe this will help. How many time do you
think Dan and his dad have played "Leader of the Band" already (with his
dad finally playing that solo again - it was French horn I think). "Peace and Love." ~
bob
Peace.
I want to send my prayers out to Dan's wife and family I know this pain
too well. I lost my wife in 2006 to cancer. She also fought a courageous
battle with this awful disease. She left a hole in me and my 16 year old
son's heart and it was through her that I became a fan of Dan's. She was a
huge fan of all his works. I hope Dan is in heaven now entertaining all
who have gone before us for God gave him this beautiful gift of music. I
am sure that Dan is playing right now in the best arena of all heaven.
Ride on my earthly brother and say hi to my sweet Colleen. Your music and
more importantly your presence here on earth will be missed. ~ Chris d
I've listened to and loved Dan's music for decades. He gave so much
through his music it fills me with sadness that he's left this world.
May his family and friends find comfort in each other's arms and the
strength of Dan Fogelberg's legacy.
My 2007 contribution to the LiveStrong campaign for cancer research is
in his honor. ~
Debbie Steinmann, Atlanta, GA
Dear Dan's family and friends -
What can one say? Words are so easy at times, and so hard at others?
I came to Dan's music later in life although I DO NOT REGARD MYSELF AS OLD! I feel that he magically enhanced my life with his talent.
I only heard the news of Dan's sad passing this morning in England, and I felt that I must let you all know, that the "Man " touched my life, as he must of done to millions of others, with his music and effervescence. I am not too proud to tell you that I cried when I heard the news. You must be so proud, and honored to have been part of his life. I know at this time words can seem so inadequate and feeble to allay the sad sense of the loss that you must be feeling right now - with the sense of injustice that you must be feeling against the world, and all things in God's world, to take such a shining star as Dan.
I will leave you with your fond memories, and let you fulfill your grief, but you are in my and my family's thoughts.
Love...or what is your will ~
Paul Whittington (& family),
Middlesex, England
I'm sure you will receive countless emails from countless fans of

and I just want to say God bless you and may he comfort you in your time
of need.
Dan will be sorely missed but his music will live forever along with his
