My thoughts and condolences to Dan's wife and family in their loss. I am saddened at the news and my heart has opened in an unusual way today. Through listening to his lyrics over the years, I believe he has lived profoundly in his lifetime---reaching a potential that few of us ever reach. His lyrical messages inspired others to love more passionately.... follow the beat of their own drummer and respect ourselves and nature more. Dan's music touched a deep place inside of me like no other musician. As I listen to all of my CD's today, I can recount endless hours on headphones at the college library-- his early albums literally got me through school and loves lost. My favorite song was "The River" from Home free. Because of his death today, as a physician, I am more passionate in my quest to help other men in their prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. My practice focuses on functional testing which sheds light on prostate dysfunction years before cancer manifests. A wonderful soul, Dan Fogelberg, has left us and moved on. Bless you for loving him.
Your music has been a source of inspiration, memories and great joy for many years. Our deepest sympathies to your family. Your songs will live on long past all of our lives. ~
Mike Ganino
Dan - you are now playing your beautiful music in heaven. My heart aches for all here on earth who will miss you. I have been a fan for many years and your music has soothed me through bad times and made me smile through good times. Your songs were playing in my hospital room when both of my beautiful daughters were born. Thank you for sharing your gift and beauty with all of us. You will be missed forever.
I have only wept for one other musician this hard in my life and that was Jerry Garcia. Dan's lyrics were magical, his songs touched us so deeply. I am truly saddened by this great man's early passing. The leader of the band truly has died ~ Jennifer Buckland
I had the pleasure of seeing Dan Fogelberg live in Pittsburgh twice in the 80's. I always had a tradition and still do to this day. That at the first big snowfall, I would put on "Nether Lands" and list to it. How ironic that I put it on the day I found out about Dan's passing. My condolences to his wife and family. His music will be forever in my heart and mind and I know I'll hear "Nether Lands" at least once every year.
Dan --
You gave us ALL a gift. Your moving music and touching, insightful lyrics
will live on FOREVER. You lifted us when we were down and for that we
thank you! Love always ~ S.
I grew up with Dan Fogelberg, as a teenager in the 70's. I can still recite
every lyric to every song. More than any other artist, his music inspired
me (I later went on to a Master's in music), comforted me, helped me fall in
and out of love. Later, there were several casual, magical, synchronistic
conversations with other Fogelberg lovers, which are special to me even now,
and created relationships that remain special. My heart goes out to his
family and friends, as that loss is felt deeply for those closest to him.
But I must say I've felt close all these years too, and will miss knowing
that a great poet and artistic soul has gone on to the eternal.
Sincerely ~
Nancy
As I write this, the tears are streaming down my face. Dan and his music have
meant so much to me over the course of my lifetime, it is difficult to put
into words the depth of my sorrow. I feel like a little bit of me is now gone
too. Dan was a beautiful, talented, & gracious soul. He humbly shared his
God-given gift of song and inspiration to so many. I will cherish all of his music,
and memories of his concerts I was so blessed to attend over the years.
I know first-hand what a terribly painful disease that cancer is, and it is
heartbreaking to me to know that he suffered. My prayers go out to his wife
Jean, and to the rest of his family & close friends, who are surely as devastated
as we all are now. God Bless all of them.
Heaven has now accepted a beautiful angel into its graces by the name of Dan
Fogelberg. May he forever rest in peace and always know how much he is loved.
The world is a better place for having known Dan.
With love and sympathy ~
Rose Pargiter, Knoxville, TN
When I read the news of Dan's death, I felt that a part of my heart had been
ripped out. Dan has been such an inspiration in my life, and there was
always a song that fit my mood. I would put the album, or cassette tape in, and
now the CD, and just be swept away.
But, Dan's death like Jim Alamo's, the famous basketball coach from N. C.
State that succumbed to cancer will ultimately, lead to the eventual cure of
this dreaded disease.
Dan's light will continue to Shin e... ~

Jean:
Dan's music has been a part of my life for 33+ years now. I watched my
bride walk down the isle to me with "To The Morning" being played on
acoustic guitar. It was his words that inspired me to write words of
solace when my two grandfathers and father began their journeys into
eternity. Sometime down the road when the pain subsides I hope you will
find a way to share more of your photos (and Henry Diltz), Dan's
artwork, writings, and music that never made it beyond the ranch and the
Maine shore. Blessing and Peace. ~ Mark M. Aloha, OR.
There are no words to express the loss of such a great master of music.
He
has touched the lives of many with his talents. Losing Dan is like losing a
part of my self - like losing an old friend. I've been a huge fan of his for
30 years and to learn of his passing was devastating to say the least. He is
home free now, a Captured Angel making music in heaven. ~ Denese
Dan,
Your music has been a comfort and inspiration for 30 years. I pray you'll find the comfort you've given us. Such a tragic loss. ~ Gary
The heavens will be full of the beauty of your music and the world will miss you Dan. Thoughts and prayers to you Jean, who now travel not alone, but with the love and memory of Dan forever present. ~ Lisa G.
I am truly sorry to see such a talented person leave this earth. He brought
me great happiness with his music.
My wife and I express deep remorse in hearing of the loss of Dan
Fogelberg.
Our wedding song was "Longer". (1991)
Our sincerest sympathy for Dan's wife and family."I'll bring fire in the winters,
You'll send showers in the springs.
We'll fly through the falls and summers with love on our wings" ~
John Smetzer
We'll keep a candle burning - Anja, The Netherlands
The last time I saw Dan in concert was at Ravinia in Highland Park, IL. It was a present from my husband and I sat inside and as usual, was touched by his magic. When my husband told me today that Dan has left this earth, I cried. My son asked me if I KNEW Dan Fogelberg? My response was no, but he knew me. Dan's haunting melodies and incredibly deep and moving lyrics touched me in a way no other singer/songwriter has ever done. Then, top it off with his angelic, ethereal voice. Many times his music has comforted me. This year of 2007 has been a very tough year of loss for my family and so this is all the more devastating. I wrote an email after his diagnosis and told him that my heaven will be filled with his music. I pray that he finds beauty and rest and all things glorious in his. I am so grateful for the gifts he left with his music. ~ Corrine Bachar
Under my senior class picture in the 1977 edition of the Aeire, my high school yearbook, were the words, "love when you can, cry when you have to, be who you must, that's a part of the plan." Dan Fogelberg was a big part of my growing into adulthood. I loved his music, his voice, his guitar playing, but especially his lyrics. I had the pleasure of attending his concert at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky that same year. What a blessing Dan was to his many fans. Rest in peace Dan Fogelberg and peace to those he left behind. ~ Robin F.
My heart goes out to Dan's family. What a musical legacy he has left
behind for us to enjoy!
I don't remember what year it was, but in the late 70's Dan and his band
stopped in Colorado for several shows. In college at the time, my
friends and I traveled from Boulder to Denver to see the show. It was
such a memorable concert for me. Not only did Dan's talent shine, but I
thought his band was just the "tightest". The next week, the band came
to do a few shows in Boulder at the university. Too embarrassed to admit
to my roommates that I wanted to see Fogelberg again, I bought a ticket
and went alone. I'll never forget those two concerts and have told this
story many times since then.
We'll miss you Dan. Thanks for sharing your talents and your heart with
the rest of us.
Sincerely ~
Scott
To the family and friends of Dan,
My world just grew a little smaller upon learning of Dan's passing. His music and efforts on behalf of the environment, as well as his ballads stand the test of time. May God grant you all peace, know that Dan is well. ~
Timothy F. Kerlin Ph.D.
I can remember the first time I ever heard "Leader of the Band". I was just entering high school. That song has had a huge impact on my life through the years. As well as "Same Old Lang Syne". The world has been stolen the blessings of a brilliant lyricist. My condolences to his wife Jean, and his friends and fans. My heart has a sincere pain in the corner of it marked "Dan Fogelberg". I often play several of his songs on my guitar. Today that will be all I will play. Many thanks Dan!
I have never had a single artist touch me so deeply as Dan always did. And
I know his music will remain a part of my life forever.
I loved his concerts. I went to many of them & the energy of the crowd
always amazed me. Kind & gentle. My very favorite singer/songwriter ever.
There are some people that really do make the world seem like a better place & Dan was always one of them. My thoughts & prayers will be with everyone
thru this incredibly hard loss. I visualize him now..somewhere on top of
some mountain playing his guitar.
Respectfully ~
Dawn Ellis,

With a heavy heart, feeling I've lost a beloved family member whose music helped me
survive the death of my infant son and mother. I offer you my heartfelt condolences, Jean.
I was blessed to attend 9 of Dan's concerts. At one in CT, I wrote a letter and asked it
be given to him. Before the show began, my Aunt and I were moved to front row, center
stage seats. At another concert, I asked another letter I wrote be given to him and he
signed a poster of himself for me. The last time I saw him was at the benefit show for
Chellie Pingree in Portland, Maine. So, here I am at 53 years old feeling I've lost a best
friend, yet feeling blessed to have been touched so deeply and still be able to be
touched by his living legacy of incredible music. My husband, daughter and I were
decorating the Christmas tree yesterday, and is tradition, Dan's Christmas album is the
first we listen to. As we were chatting, I said, "I haven't checked the web site in over
a week, I hope he's well." Then I turned on my computer and knew why I was feeling his
presence so deeply in that moment.
Thank you, Jean, for your support, devotion and love to a man who touched so may lives
and will live on in so many memories forever. I know my daughter will introduce the music
to her children and my step son, who plays guitar always plays Dan's songs at
Thanksgiving and dedicates them to me. As millions of fans will all be saying, I share
your loss and wish you peace in knowing that our beloved Quiet Man of Music is in a
better place. I listen to "To the Morning" every morning and the poster Dan signed for me
is framed and hanging in my living room. He moved on with so much love carrying him to a
place were he will walk with angels on streets paved with gold, with his voice blending
with theirs to add to the beauty. God Bless you ~ Vicki Michaud Cumberland, Maine
Dan,

I'm truly saddened by Dan's passing. His music will live on forever. ~ Mitch Rollins, Norman,OK
Words cannot express my sadness at hearing of Dan's passing. I have come to
this site regularly hoping for good news and was saddened today to get the
news of Sunday. My prayers to Jean as well as the rest of Dan's family. His music is a marker for many major events in my life. Every time I listen or play
one of his songs I will remember him fondly and thank God for his gifts of
words and music. What a tremendous gift he shared with us! Peace. ~
David, Louisville, KY.
In 1976 my parents took me to my first concert. It was a Dan Fogelberg in Norfolk Va. Since that day every other concert I have ever seen I have compared to that first amazing live performance. He will be missed but I will still always compare everyone else to him.
My heartfelt sadness is with your family and friends, Mr. Fogelberg. You have been
such a wonderful part of my life since my teen years. Your music makes me smile
no matter what is happening otherwise in my life. I know that Heaven has open
arms for you and you are in such a better place, but nonetheless you will so
be missed here by us who are still left on this earth!!!! The music lives on
forever and ever.. Your true fan ~ Lisa
Dan's words and music got me through some pretty tough times in my life, as
well as giving me inspiration during some of the best times. I just
discovered that he has passed and is beyond the Reach. He will be sorely
missed. My condolences go to Jean and all the rest of us who are left
behind. ~
Stephen White
Since the days of Captured Angel and Souvenirs your music has been what made it through my speakers when I needed peace. May you find it now my friend. ~ Steve
I wanted to express my deepest condolences on hearing of Dan's untimely passing. His words have given me a measure of support that has seen me through some of the darkest days of my life. Those words continue to touch me at my core, and for that, I can only offer my humble thanks, and prayers that his family and friends will be comforted in some small way knowing that he has helped to give a complete stranger hope and peace where it was lost. Quite a legacy, indeed. My best ~
Chris Johnson, Somerville, Massachusetts
I was never so shocked and saddened as I was when I heard that Dan had lost
his brave battle with cancer. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting
him, with my having grown up in the Peoria area, I always felt a closeness
to him, almost like he was an older brother. My favorite song, "Same Old
Lang Syne" still brings tears to my eyes, even after 25 years! My deepest
sympathy to all his family and friends. GODSPEED, DAN! ~ Bill Irwin,
Vacaville, CA
Thoughts and prayers go to Jean and the family. This leaves a void that
will be impossible to fill. Thanks Dan, for all you shared with the fans
over the years. We now share collectively in sorrow. God bless. ~
Mike Mooney
Fare thee well Dan...your music has touched our souls
and our loss is heaven's gain. We are all so lucky to
have had you in our lives.
Peace and kindness!
He still exists...The real Dan Fogelberg was in Dan's soul. His beautiful physical body may in fact have stopped living, but the real man was in his soul.
THAT lives on and on.
My own wife Marianne passed on three years ago from cancer. She flew out of this world and into Heaven. She was a huge Dan Fogelberg fan. I am certain that she was there when Dan arrived in Heaven....where there is no pain!
My condolences to his wife and family in this dark time, but please smile between those tears, because you WILL see him again someday.
May God fill those empty spaces with his love.
The captured Angel isn't captured anymore, he flies with the wind! ~ Matthew
Jean and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you today.
I have an ocean of gratitude for that first day of inspiration and the thousands of
memories since. I was budding guitarist singer/songwriter and a freshman at the
University of Massachusetts in Amherst in the fall of 1974 when I first heard Dan's
voice. I was standing in a local mom and pop record shop on Main Street and they were
playing Dan's "Souvenirs" record in its entirety over the sound system. For me it was
one of those "crack your head wide open, let the beauty pour in and be forever changed"
moments.
I'm a professional musician. I have been all my adult life. These days I work primarily
in the recording studio and occasionally on the road with a few high profile recording
artists. I've enjoyed success as a songwriter with songs that have appeared on many an
album, in movies and on television, and although I never had the pleasure of meeting Dan
in person, he was a mentor to me. He played a larger part in my life. Through his gift
of music, he motivated me, inspired me and pushed me to be better than I could ever have
been on my own... and I know that I'm far from alone. I hope you'll find comfort in the
knowledge that Dan's illuminating influence continues to reverberate through so many of
us. We will miss him, we will celebrate him and we are forever in his debt. ~
Jim K, Nashville, TN
Few people have delivered such enduring messages both lyrically and musically as Dan Fogelberg. He will be missed...and still loved.

So sorry to hear of Dan's passing..did not know he had been diagnosed.
I am sure it was a very difficult and painful last few years.
His songs live on and will be enjoyed by many----I hope it helps to know
that he as been a voice, at least for me, when I could not find quite
the right words to say how I felt. ~
Vivian Demas, Esq.
I was very sad to hear of Dan's passing. He just had a beautiful voice. I
have quite a bit of his cd's including the Portrait Box Set. My absolute
favorite songs of his were "Same Old Lang Syne", "Heart Hotels", "Since You've
Asked" and "Nether Lands". I got to see him in concert a few times in the 90's
in Las Vegas where I lived at the time. "Longer" and "Since You've Asked" were
sung at my and my wife's wedding. Rest In Peace Dan, you will be missed. ~ Samuel Litman
I am so very sorry for the loss of Dan to this world. Dan is one of the reasons I wanted
to learn to play guitar, and his song book is one of the first I bought to learn to play
all my favorite songs of his that I've listened to since the first album. I'll never
forget seeing him in concert in the 1980s with my sister. He was as good a performer as
he was a singer-songwriter. He leaves a wonderful legacy, not just of his songs, but of
inspiring people -- men and women -- to get screened for all types of cancer. I wish his
family God's peace at their time of loss. ~
Amy,
Fort Worth, Texas
There is no more to say than just "Thank You." ~
William R. Majernik Jr.
Dearest Jean, I am so sorry for your loss. I'm sure as you already know Dan was
a wonderful Man and Artist. I have loved his music since the 1970's, although
this is the first I have heard about his illness. I just read online that he had
passed away. I am terribly upset because I always wanted to see him in person in
concert. Now that will not ever be possible. Back in the late 90's he came to
Tulsa, OK and I begged my Husband to take me to see him. He agreed, but when it
was time to go he was unexpectedly called in to work so we didn't get to go. I
only hope he knew how much we all loved and admired him. Again, so sorry for
your loss and for all the people out there who loved him. Sincerely ~ Michelle
Reed
Dan's music truly touched the hearts and souls of everyone who heard it. I
hope tat future generations will discover his music and be touched as we all
were.
My condolences to the family, but try to remember that he may have left this
life, but his voice and talent will now join the other musical angels in
heaven. ~
Claudia Martin
Peace, blue mountain skies, thank you for the melodies.
Strung together with words like pearls that made us love
and sometimes cry.
A part of our youth of days gone by. Thank you Dan. ~ Lou
Dan was one of my favorite musicians. All his albums were
beautifully

My most heartfelt condolences to the Fogelberg family. Now I know that the rock and roll
heaven truly has one hell of a band, with Dan on the lead vocals.Your words and music
will live on with me, and millions of other people who love your songs.

I don't even know where to begin. I hope his family and friends take comfort in knowing that our beloved singer/songwriter is at peace. His music helped soothe me and gave guidance in so many turning points of my life. His music is truly a major part of the soundtrack to my life. It's such a sad, sad loss for the world. His music will live on and continue to do the good work it always has done. Goodbye, sweet friend.
Love ~

My heart has broken a few times during my life and this afternoon, as I logged on to
write an estranged friend that I've been trying for some time now to reconnect with, I
read the headline on Yahoo! of Dan's passing and was SO DEEPLY saddened. The same
friend, from third grade, who I was writing is the ONE who first introduced me to Dan
Fogelberg's music when we were in 9th grade and best girlfriends! It's bittersweet irony
today. The song she first had me listen to was "Part of the Plan" from "Souvenirs" and from there I went on to literally wear out my LP of Nether Lands and was
THRILLED they printed a CD of such an old album just a few years ago! How I ADORE that
title song, and then "Dancing Shoes," and all of his other songs. There were no so-so
songs. I am especially sad that I did not keep up with his career during these last few
years but hope to hear his more recent work.
To his wife, family, closest friends and colleagues, I am very sorry for your heartache
and that Dan will no longer be in your day-to-day lives. I am also deeply sorry that you
had to endure such a long road of heartbreaking emotions while he was ill.
Rest assured that his spirit will live on not only in his music, but in the hearts of
millions of us who are humbled and honored to call ourselves his fans. His music makes
me cry hard, smile so deeply it hurts, want to run, want to slow down, it just makes me
feel and THAT is what music is all about! He will NEVER be forgotten and I will be
playing his music throughout the holidays and in the future to honor him!
Sincerely ~
Priscilla Bechtinger
Dear Jean and family, I, like thousands of other fans are sincerely sorry to hear about Dan. I'm going to be 50 this January. Dan was my # 1 top favorite artist and was the first that I learned how to play the guitar with "Part of the plan".
I never get tired of his lyrics, guitar licks, and music. He will always be with us. God bless you ! ~
ED Daeges, Omaha,Ne
Jean and family,
Please accept my family's deepest sympathies and condolences upon Dan's
passing. His music has inspired me and uplifted me for more than 30 years. I
was fortunate to see Dan in concert in the 80's in Kansas City during his
acoustic tour. It was a memory of a lifetime. He is in that wonderful place
that he wrote and sang about so often, and I know the "trail rose up to meet
him as he travels Ever On."
God's blessings to you during this difficult time. ~
Janet, Brad, Jarryd and Alexander Webb
To the family of Dan,
Words cannot express the sadness I felt when I read about the passing of
Dan on Sunday. I became a fan of his music in my latter teens and grew
to have more passion for it as I got older. Now at 30, I find myself
turning the volume up anytime I hear his voice. I am certain the music
in heaven sounds much more beautiful with his voice.
My thoughts and prayers to you all! ~
Karla B. Fisher
This is the end of an amazing and beautiful era. Thank you for sharing and
leaving with us with all the melodies that have been so touching and important
in our lives. I can't imagine that the planet is ready to be without this
soul. Thank you. I will all miss you. Jean - My deepest sympathy... ~ Jenifer, Long time

Dan was/is my favorite musician. I have followed his career since the 70's
and have seen him many times in concert. I cried when I heard the news. I
too have a summer home in Maine. My favorite song among
many favorite songs of Dan's was "The Reach". I had just introduced my 19
year old daughter to Dan's music and she fell in love with it. I feel like
I have lost a brother.
My sincere condolences... Thank you for the inspiring music. ~

Next month I turn 60 and have enjoyed Dan's music for many, many years. I always thought of myself as a man's man, but Dan's sensitive music and lyrics touched me deeply. He was not only a tremendously gifted writer and musician, but a thought provoking artist. I have many of Dan's CD's and hopefully will enjoy them for many years to come. The world has lost not only a great entertainer, but a humble, sensitive man. God bless you and thank you. ~

Dan, my heart is broken today. Your beautiful lyrics and songs will live on in my heart, and for generations to come. I will teach my grandchildren about you. I know that you are at peace now. Thank you for the peaceful moments that you gave to us. My condolences to Jean, and your family. Heaven has captured an angel. Love ~ a fan since the 70's.
".... and the night gets so dark but some kind of message comes through to you, some kind of message shoots through and it says to you love when you can, cry when you have to, be what you must that's a part of the plan, await your arrival with simple survival and one day we'll all understand." Adore that song, love those lyrics. Thank you for all the wonderful music, lyrics and art and goodbye to one of the good guys.
I have known Dan's music over 25 years. I was 18 years old and now I am 44. I heard "Nether Lands" at the house of a friend and I fell in love with it. I have the LP and have always considered it a treasure. I acquired in on CD. Still today the strongest emotions and the magical atmospheres that it evokes to me have remained. Thanks, Dan. I hope that a beautiful and sweet music always accompanies you. ~ Alberto Carnero - Valstrona (Italy)
Many condolences to the family and thank you to a master craftsman. I have been a fan since the seventies and always loved "Phoenix" for a lot of reasons, mostly for its positive views of the future and the will to overcome obstacles. "As The Raven Flies" would be a fitting tribute also. God bless. ~ John in St. Louis
I cannot tell you how much Dan meant to me. I fell in love with his music in our choir room in 1972 as a junior in high school, and I have loved him ever since. I always managed to try to catch him on TV whenever I could. I thank God for PBS and hopefully they will keep his performances alive for us true Dan fans. I will truly miss him but also am glad that I own every album he ever produced. God be with Dan's family at this time. ~ Lisa, Sterling, Illinois
Dan Fogelberg was such a gifted and beautiful spirited man. His passing is to believe that he's no longer in pain with this terrible disease. May God bless his family during this time of great loss. Peace & Love Always ~

Dear family, I send you my heartfelt message during these days for you. Dan's music always touched me in a special way. There were words of hope and love, things we knew and did not know. I know that there is a special place in heaven for him singing with the angels. May God be with you and hold you and keep you. We all loved him and he left us such a gift that he will not be forgotten. ~ Garnett E Embry
I am shocked and saddened to hear of Dan's passing. His music is a part
of my life. I first remember hitch hiking from U of I to ISU to see Dan
in concert in the 70's. One of many times we saw him. My college roommate had his father for music class in Peoria. I hung with old friends of
his in Champaign. I now live in Maine. How ironic. Maybe someday I will
get to meet the man that gave inspiration, reflection and a sense of place
to me. Lucky are those that knew him. Lucky are those that hear his
music. Peace. ~ pmr
Thank you. ~ Tom
Life here is short. A blink of an eye. Yet in that short time Dan Fogelberg
inspired so many. This is a loss we all share in different ways but it will be
important to celebrate his life, music and the message that Dan Fogelberg left
us. He leaves behind the gift of song and the inspiration to preserve the
wilderness to make this world a better place...a more peaceful place...which
perhaps he has finally found.
Our prayers are with you in this sad time. Dan will be missed. He was one of the best.
To the Fogelberg Family,
It must be a comfort to know how many people Dan's music touched. I will
spin Souvenirs and Captured Angel on the turntable tonight and raise a glass
in his honor. ~
Douglas Allen,
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Jean, please know you're in my prayers. As it's a sad time on earth with Dan's
passing, the heavens have received a very special angel. God Bless. ~ Penny
One of my very first albums. Still remains in my collection where many others have been weeded out. His music was like a fruit tree that consistently produced many a tasty bite. May another generation discover your talent.
I have listened to Dan's music since I was 12 years old. I am now 47.
I also listen to Nash, Buffett, and the others who treasured him both professionally and as a real, prolific human being.
I just heard about your 'release' from this world in your physical form.
I will never forget, I will keep the flame burning, because you spoke from your heart, and in doing so, touched mine for over 30 years.
I saw you twice live, and was thrilled I even got tickets. I was in Portland Oregon, and you brought your guitar, the piano, and your DUCK!!!!
Some people do things to be famous. You, without knowing it will live in hearts and generations to come forever.
I am a better person because I was fortunate to have contact with you in your music. "There's a ring around the moon tonight, and a chill in the air. And a fire in the stars that hang so near, so near.....". You will always reside in my heart always with gratefulness and with deep respect.
Jean, I hope his legacy comforts you as you grieve, as his music and his character will never die.
Dan, you did not yell, you whispered, and that taught me to listen better. ~
Shannon Monahan,
A friend and listener always.
Dan was one of my greatest influences and I loved his talent as his music
would take me to places beyond the stresses of the world. He's composing in
heaven I'm sure and heaven is richer for it. It breaks my heart that he's
gone but God Bless him, he's not suffering any more. ~ Nonie Crete
God's Love and Peace to Jean and Dan's family. This world has lost one
of the greatest musicians of our lifetime. Dan's music has helped shape my life since I was 15 (I am now 45). As a
teen, I can remember listening his "Nether Lands" album over
and over again. His music touched my heart and soul. It would make me
cry it was so beautiful, his voice and his lyrics. Dan rest peaceful
with the angels in heaven . Your music will live on forever in this world
and in heaven.
With my sincere heartfelt sympathy ~ Lori
Dan is truly the leader of the musical heart - his words and music will live on

My deepest, sincere condolences to the family and dear friends of Dan.
His music was beautiful and he was a beautiful soul. I will never
forget him. The world needs more people like Dan - his death comes way
too soon. ~

Dear Dan and to Jean, I met you in Lake Tahoe, some ten years ago in South Lake Tahoe for five of the most memorable minutes of my life!!!! You were, (after all) the one I learned to write lyrics and songs, sing, and play guitar from. As we finished that conversation I remembered saying, "I'll see you when you're back in California!" And I did see you several more times ....but, I never bothered you nor met with you again! That is, until today!
I just felt it important to "bug" you and tell you a few things. One, if a guy at 47 can admit to having a super hero... well then, Dan you are definitely mine! Two, thanks for giving me the passion of guitar, singing and writing, you helped pull me through some pretty rough times in my own life. Three, and this to you Jean, I am a physician at a local Northern California hospital and encourage my patients to have their prostates checked yearly, please keep me informed if I can assist Dan's organization, it seems the least I could do for all he's done for me!
To you, Daniel Fogelberg, I thank you for the music. There are few Human Beings on this planet God blessed with such spirit, strength, talent and heavenly voice! You gave to me an awesome, wonderful and special gift.... a gift I know, I never can repay! My thoughts and prayers and memories I share with you Jean, he will be sorrowfully missed. Sincerely ~ Michael Joyce
Your music touched my life in ways I cannot express. I was certain you were
the only other guy on the planet that experienced the things I had. I saw
you once in concert a few years ago. I was really hoping to see you again. ~
Rick Migal
May the trail rise up to meet you - May your heart rejoice in song - May the skies be fair above you - As you journey ever on. Ever on--ever on. Dan's music has been a great friend to me for many years. I am so saddened of his loss. He is a beautiful soul and his songs live on in all of us. Love and Peace to Jean and the family.
I'm a Peoria native and have listened to Dan since the 70's. I remember
finding his first album at a music store in The Village and thinking how
cool that a guy from Peoria had a record. When I went to college I was
surprised to find that other people had discovered him as well. For the past
35 years his songs have been a part of my life and all of them bring back
wonderful memories. After I purchased his last CD, I was hoping to finally
catch him on tour and learned about his illness as I checked the website for
tour dates. It's been my habit to check on the site every so often to see
how he was doing, but I was watching the news last night when the report
came about his death. Thanks, Dan, for the music, the message, and the
memories. ~
Kathy
Never met Dan, but feel like I lost a good friend. A musical companion for
many years of my life. Rest in peace Dan. My condolences to Jean, family,
friends and fans all over the world. ~
Wilfred - The Netherlands
The leader of the band has left the building.
I've loved Dan Fogelberg's music since I discovered it in the eighties. I craved simple rhythms and expert musicianship as a diversion from the often loud and hyper-rhythmic sounds I grew up with as a young black man in the Inner City. It was Mr. Fogelberg's lyrics, however that really got me. I've only known of a couple of songwriters who could touch me with such profound lyrics. One was Smokey Robinson, the other was Dan Fogelberg.
I wasn't someone who really listened to lyrics closely until I had a girlfriend who knew every lyric to every song, it seemed. That caused me to listen more closely. That's when I discovered Dan Fogelberg's songs! Among my favorite songs was "Make Love Stay". How could anyone not be moved by these lyrics:
Moments fleet taste so sweet within the rapture
When precious flesh is greedily consumed
But mystery is a thing not easily captured
And once deceased, not easily exhumed
Mr. Fogelberg's lyrics have fueled the deepest love in my heart for my lovers, and gave me so much to think about in regards to life in general. I'm very sorry that his contributions to music have ended today; but his music will not die. I hope to be half the songwriter he was. If I can achieve that, I'll be doing okay. Dan Fogelberg, we'll miss you deeply.
To his wife and family come all of my best wishes and prayers for your peace and comfort in this time of loss. You were blessed to have such a man in your life. Thank you for sharing him with us! ~
Alfonso Freeman
My thoughts and prayers go out to Dan's family.... I'm so sorry for your loss. Dan's music has touched my heart forever.
Sincerely ~
Teresa
I was truly saddened to read of Dan's passing yesterday. As I listened to "Leader of the Band" today one more time, which always reminded me of my own father, I wept. A marvelously talented man has passed on. May God bless him and ease the mourning of those closest to him.
I didn't realize just how deeply I had been touched by Dan until I heard the news of his passing.
I was dragged to a concert.... had to be dragged from the record store afterwards.
Never had I been so touched by a single performance and still haven't.
For your body of work.... Thank You.
To his Family - may you find Peace. ~
Ric
To Dan's Family: My sincerest condolences for your loss, especially at this time of the year. As a kid growing up and a guitar player Dan's lyrics and music were very special to me at that point in my life and I still enjoy it today. Regards ~ Paul
Dear Dan,
Thank You for sharing your beautiful soul with us! May you rest in
peace. Your words will be with me "all of the days of my life".
I am deeply saddened by the news of Dan Fogelberg's untimely death. I grew
up in the 1970's and 80's listening to his music and it has been part of the
soundtrack of my life. I have been a fan of Dan's music for a very long
time. I have been learning to play the acoustic guitar for couple of years now
and am currently learning to play his song, "Longer". My condolences. Dan will
be greatly missed in the music world and thank you Dan for the wonderful
music.
Dan’s family,
My prayers are with you. I feel I have lost a brother. I lost count of how
many times I saw him and I don't have the words to say how big Dan has been in
my life. Please be strong and may God be with you during these times. ~ Darrek, Exiled in Atlanta
Thanks for the music Dan...and thanks for enriching my life. You'll not be forgotten. ~ Gary Sanderson
It is with heavy heart I sit here typing this. My condolences to all of Dan's family. I still remember some thirty odd years ago the first song I learned to play and sing was "Crow . It has remained one of my favorites. Dan certainly inspired me as an amateur musician. Many of his songs are included in my repertoire. Just about 2 weeks ago we had a power failure here in the Midwest so I pulled out my Hummingbird and started singing some of Dan's songs. My wife commented about it being awhile since she had heard me sing some of them. I think tonight I have a date with a Hummingbird and a "Crow". Peace be with you Dan . ~ Beau Brannan
Wow, 20 years or more of music that helped shape my life and I didn't even know
it. Just hearing a song, no matter who the artist is, so often brings back great memories. With Dan's passing I just realized how many of these memories will be brought back with his beautiful music. God bless you and your family. Thanks for the memories! ~ Jim,
Pahrump, Nevada
My most heartfelt condolences to Dan and Jean's families. The first time I heard "Hard To Say", at age 13, I knew that I would grow up listening to your music. Thank you for all of the wonderful stories that my mind evokes when I hear your music. You will be missed terribly. God Bless You. ~
Charlie
I'll never forget hearing Dan Fogelberg during my freshman orientation at the State University of NY, College at Oswego in 1984. It was a slide show (how quaint in the '80s) showing all of what were a great number of beautiful scenes of this wonderful campus. It was accompanied by the song "To the Morning". That memory has been with me to this day and will never leave.
To me, that's the legacy of a great singer/songwriter--songs that touch other people's lives so profoundly and completely that they are embedded in their lives. Dan Fogelberg was one such songwriter and he truly will be missed.
Heaven's band is even a better one today and those of us left here behind are the less fortunate for it. ~

I lost my partner, age 58, on December 26, 2004 to prostate cancer . He
was also diagnosed at stage 4. I urge all men to start early getting a
yearly blood test so they can monitor not only the PSA level, but also
the velocity. Any major increase should be investigated. My thoughts and
prayers are with Dan's family. I know the frustration and pain that you
went through.
Warmest regards ~
Peggie Howard
I do not know what it is to lose my husband or my son but I do know that part of my
heart is sad beyond words. Dan's music was magical and healing. His music brought me
through many hard days when I didn't want to see the "Morning". He gave me hope to go on
with every word he wrote. I am so very sad for your loss and I pray for God's comfort
during this very hard time. He is already missed by all of us who loved him from afar.
We all sigh with sadness this day. ~ Janet/Ohio
My thoughts and prayers are with Dans family. His music will always have a
very special place in my heart. I still remember every word of every song
from the Souvenirs album and just about every album after that. Nether
Lands will always remind me of my Sophomore year at Indiana University. If
you didnt own that album you must not have had a turntable. I will pass
the musical legacy of Dan on to my three teenagers. Thanks for leaving this
world a better place than when you arrived. ~
Mark Haun
Dan, you were the best. Since I was a kid all I ever wanted to do was to
meet you in person and thank you for such wonderful melodies that came
from your heart and shared with everyone. Rest in peace, leader of the
band.
Dan, your music has guided me in ways I could never have predicted in
1989, when I first discovered your music at the age of 18. You have been
my love guru. Listening to how you have endured a broken heart time and
again, and still opened yourself to love again has given me courage to
do the same. I hope you are in a place where all love is requited, all
prayers are answered, all wishes are granted, and all feelings are
spoken. The rest of us remain in a place where all your songs are an
inspiration to live and love. Your music is forever etched on my soul.
With love ~ Kelly M, Montrose, CO
I'm truly sorry to learn about Dan's passing.
He truly was a delightful singer, songwriter and instrumentalist
and his voice was absolutely magical.
He will continue, I'm sure, to live on in many people's thoughts.
An inspiration to every new musician and audience alike. ~
Paul Landry,
London, England
Dan: Your music played a part in some of the happiest times of my life. May
you rest in peace now that your pain, and suffering is over.
Godspeed.
Your music was an inspiration to me in the 70's. Pure, simple, beautiful.
The world of music has lost a wonderful artist. So sad to hear of Dan's
passing. He will be missed by so very many people. ~
Brian
Upon hearing the news last night my heart was filled with an intense sadness but at the same time an immense gratitude. I can't even begin to
imagine my life without the inspiration of the beautiful gifts Dan shared
through his music. I am praying today for peace for you Jean and for the
rest of Dan's family and close friends. ~ Craig Tanner
What can be said that hasn't been said before about Dan? He was a
rare
talent, indeed. Very few have touched my heart like his music. I was
fortunate enough to see him in Asheville, NC in the mid 90s for an
acoustic concert. And, it is in my Top 10 list of all time. And that's
saying something from this Baby Boomer. My deepest sympathy to Dan's
family. We will not see his likes again. Farewell, my friend. We will
meet again. ~
(Mr.) Gerry Huntley

Dear Jean,
In memory of Dan because he's touched my life in so many positive ways, I'd like to share one of my favorite poems. I hope that your beautiful memories of life with Dan will continue to bring you comfort and peace!
With love and gratitude ~
Judi Long,
A Devoted Fan from Pennsylvania
"For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind
and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath
from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand
and seek God unencumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence
shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top,
then shall you begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs,
then shall you truly dance." -
Kahlil Gibran
Jean:
With your husband's passing, I am reminded of the Parable of Immortality by
Henry Van Dyke. (I changed, via brackets, the feminine pronouns to the
masculine form, for Dan.)
"I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads [his] white
sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. [He] is an
object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last [he]
hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to
mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, "There [he] goes!"
Gone where? Gone from my sight...that is all. [He] is just as large in
mast and hull and spar as [he] was when [he] left my side and just as able
to bear [his] load of living freight to the place of destination. [His]
diminished size is in me, not in [him]. And just at the moment when someone
at my side says, "There [he] goes!" there are other eyes watching [him]
coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here [he] comes!"
May God's peace be upon you, and Dan's family, fans and friends.
Sincerely ~
Jan McBride,
(Carpinteria, CA)
