Dan was a huge part of my "formative" years in the 70's and 80's. I
always thought that his music and lyrics were a testament to how easy it
is to communicate with others if you are honest, humble and care deeply
for those around you. It also helps to be a fantastic songwriter who is
fortunate enough to surround yourself with other excellent musicians. My
adult kids are all big fans of Dan since they have heard his music from
the time they were born and can relate to it as easily as I did at their
age.
My deepest condolences to Dan's family and friends. Long live "The
Phoenix" since it like Dan's music will always rise again.
Much Love ~
Paul Hathaway
My prayers are with Dan's family at this time of loss. His music touched my
life in so many ways, and there is comfort in knowing that I join with many
fans around the world -- equally touched -- as we wish him God Speed. I know
the 'sound, like the beating of heavenly wings" accompanies him on his
journey.
We love you, Dan. You are sorely missed. ~

I am very saddened by the news of Dan Fogelberg's passing. I used a quote
from "Part of the Plan" in my high school year book 29 years ago. Peace be
with him and his family. ~
Susan
I've been listening to Dan's music since the early 80's and have a fondness
in my heart when the stations playing Christmas Music play "Same Old Lang
Syne." I was saddened by the news and will miss him. He is off to meet the real
Leader of the Band. God Bless. ~
Rick Masnyk,
Uxbridge, MA
Dan I truly will miss you and your music. Today I was crying at work
about you. It saddens me with all my heart. Best wishes to Jean. ~

My great sorrow for the loss of Dan. His music, especially the song "Longer" has enriched my life. ~

I send my condolences to Dan's family and am grateful for his gift of music
to all of us.
I am heartbroken...thank you for all of the beautiful music and memories. I'll never forget you. Love ~ Jennifer
Thanks for the music, and prayers to Jean. ~

Dan has given the world so much. Thank you. ~ Barb
Growing up in the late 70's and early 80's, I thoroughly enjoyed Dan's soothing soft-rock melodies as a alternative to the hard-rock I otherwise enjoyed. Classics such as 'Power of Gold', 'Missing You' and 'Run for the Roses' were my personal favorites, along with 1984's rocking 'Language of Love'. Dan Fogelberg has left behind a legacy of music that will live on forever. In fact, I'm listening to 'The Essential Dan Fogelberg' while typing this email. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. The world has lost a true musical talent and I'm sure, a fine human being. ~
Terry Vinson,

Dan, I wish you peace in your new heavenly home. Thank you so much for all
the years of joy you gave me and many others. I always and will always
associate you with my great youth, thank you for making that time immensely
special. ~ Teresa
I awoke this morning to the news of Dan's passing when my wife told of the
news report she had seen last night. I am truly saddened of this and wish
to send my deepest condolences to Dan's family and friends. My journey began
in 1974 when I first heard Dan's music and I immediately fell in love with
his genius. This was my heart spoken through another's voice. How could
someone I'd never met, know what and how I felt and say it the way I wanted
to say it? That was your genius Dan. Knowing what we wanted to say and put
your voice to it. And what a beautiful voice it was. Pure poetry, pure
romance, pure passion! A balladeer in the greatest sense of the word. For
33 years I have looked forward to your next song to lead me on my own path
of understanding. I will miss that anticipation. Strangely, I just bought
Dan's "Greetings From the West" DVD and watched it beginning to end. As we
grieve his passing let's hope the "*gift we never can repay*" stays in our
hearts and minds to one of life's great poets. Our only loss is not hearing
your inspiration one more time and yet we will feel your presence every time
we hear your song. Goodbye Dan, for you will be missed. Your legacy will
live through us who will pass it on to those who will listen.~ David P.
His music inspired. His words comforted and enlightened. His love of the
Reach and the beauty of Maine reach out to all who know the place. What a loss
to his family and to all those who appreciate and love his talent. Heartfelt
condolences to his wife and to all who knew and loved him...
Dear Dan - I never wrote you or saw you, but you have a memory in my life. Every time I hear "Same Old Lang Syne" I want to cry. It is the most beautiful song. You are just taken there. You were a part of my high school days and I appreciate you and hope you find wonderful peace in the place you are with no sickness or pain, beautiful sounds coming down on the nightshift!! ~ Pam
Through the music of Dan Fogelberg I found a friend, and I found I can
believe in myself and love myself. The words and music of this great songwriter
and person will forever stay in my heart along with warm thoughts. God has a new angel with him now. Dan , you will be greatly missed, but you leave an
amazing legacy. Rest in peace my friend. Love ~ Sherry
Dear Ones,
Thank you for having this website. Much love and blessings to you as you
journey through this transition. Condolences to Dan's wife and family.
May he continue to surround you with his love and light. Please know
that he is safe now and fine. His spirit lives in his music and every
thought. Peace and love to you ~ Allyson
Thanks Dan for the music. I know there was more to you than just the music,
but that was the only part you shared with us, and we are the better for it.
My condolences to those you left behind, and may God speed you journey into
your next realm. You are missed. Love ~ Tom & Nancy Lunney, Cincinnati,
Ohio
Dear Jean & Family,
My husband and I would like to send you our deepest condolences. We are so sorry about Dan’s passing. We checked in with his website regularly especially after his illness. We kept hoping to hear good news and hear that he’d be going into the studio again or even out on the road. Our hearts broke when we heard the news. His music will always remind us of a time in our lives when we were first falling in love. We always brought our whole Fogelberg CD collection every time we went camping. At our wedding we were insistent on the DJ bringing several songs for the reception. His music will live in our hearts forever.
Love ~
Carmen & John Magliano
My sisters and brother and I have shared a lengthy email exchange about
Dan Fogelberg's legacy...for all of us, his music defined our youth, our
college years - and it brings back wonderful memories of those days for
all of us. My sister, Susan Branigin, who has always been a huge fan of
his, wrote this in response to my other sister's email that she felt
like crying - and I thought it was a wonderful response. I would like
to share it with everyone!
For me Fogelberg is growing up and living in Franklin (Indiana). Spring
time and going to the Mystery Train, where I bought my copy of "Phoenix," in either 1978 or 1979 (or was it 1980?). I remember
listening to that in my room alot, and on the radio in the car. Then,
later, his songs were popular when I was in college. Don't ever feel
ridiculous because you're sad--because music's purpose is the expression
of feeling--of both the artist and the listener. It's what good music
and good musicians are capable of doing. In one form or another, music
is about who we all are inside as humans. We can look back and remember
ourselves at certain times through certain songs that touch us. I think
it's a great tribute to Fogelberg that his music touched his fans'
lives--and he knew that it did. That alone must've made his life
worthwhile, although I am sure there were other things in his life that
did that. Even though the musician may not live forever, his music can,
and it's beautiful that he has such a legacy that way. So listen to
your Fogelberg music and enjoy what it brings you!
God Bless Dan ~ his legacy lives on through HIS music. May he rest in
peace. ~
Kate Branigin Linderman
In 1977 I was a Firefighter at Ramstein Air Base and
nine of us got tickets for a rock concert featuring
Dan and the Eagles. Unfortunately, Dan wasn't able to
appear and the crowd was very vocal in its
displeasure at the news.
I was finally able to see him play in 1992 during his "Greetings From the West" Concert in Concord. My
then girlfriend actually proposed to me later that
night (I reluctantly told her no, but I was very
honored that she asked me).
I have all of his albums and was saddened when I
learned of his battle with prostate cancer and again
when I learned that he had died.
I do have to thank him for urging all of us to be
tested. I have had all the tests and, during a
colonoscopy, a pre-cancerous polyp was found that
could not be removed. I'll have surgery some time in
2008 to remove it before it has the chance to become
cancer.
I only wish that Dan had had the prostate cancer
diagnosed in time to save his life. We have all lost
a fantastic songwriter, singer, and performer. Then
again, I would have to add one more wish.
I wish I could have seen him in 1977 in Germany. Once
was just not enough to have seen him in concert.
God Bless his family and my thoughts are with you.
The first album I ever purchased was "Home Free," which I still have. After
discovering his music and talent, I realized he was a modern day poet and
genius. His rendition of "Since You've Asked" from the "Twin Sons of Different
Mothers" with Tim Weisberg on flute is truly magical. Dan and his music will live
on forever. ~ Rene Castillo - Harlingen, TX
When Home Free, Souvenirs and Captured Angel were released, I was in the midst of
defining myself as a young adult; these lyrics and sentiments, written by an immensely
intelligent, talented and caring individual, touched my heart and soul. I played them
endlessly. When I finally had the opportunity to see him perform live in 2003, I
wept...in part because it was so wonderful to relive those tender and important times
with an artist I was terribly fond of, and in part because I was thrilled to be able to
listen to new works and rejoice in his continued success. Dan Fogelberg...a real triumph
of a human being. I went along my own journey since then, not knowing of this hardship
to which he has now succumbed - I'm happy to learn peacefully and in loving company at
the end. I'm sorry beyond measure.
May the knowledge that his wife was a loving, steadfast and devoted friend and lover
somehow bring her peace through this experience we all fear and dread, that is, the loss
of our most precious life partner. Her help and support to him through these years no
doubt made all the difference in the world, and I hope she can realize some comfort from
that and get some care and help from those who loved them both. I will pray for all. ~
Christina Bogan, Buffalo, New York
I lost count of the number of phone calls and emails I received today
giving me the news of Dan's passing. My prayers are with his family and all who
loved him. Please know that his music touched many and will continue to touch
generations to come. We played his music at our wedding 26 years ago and
today anytime we are together and hear "Longer" we share a little smile. That
memory cannot be lessened by death or time. What a wonderful gift !
As one who was a musical artist and performer for many years, Dan was, bar none, my greatest influence and inspiration. To say his music has been meaningful to me, or that it has enriched my life is an understatement. His music gave me solace and insight when I needed it most, and inspired me to poetic depths like no other. Upon hearing the shocking news of his passing yesterday I was struck with a deep inconsolable sadness and sense of loss that is difficult to describe. It's nearly impossible to believe...The world has lost a bright, eloquent and beautiful light at a time it needs this most.
I am grateful for the beautiful companionship of Dan's music over the years and for all it has meant to me. I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to Dan's family (including Peter, whom I've met). Dan and his music will never be forgotten.
~ Nora Gedgaudas
I thank God for the beauty and lasting impressions of
Dan's music. Dan was simply a musical genius with an
unmatched combination of incredible songwriting
ability and a gift of musicianship found in no other
performer I have ever seen. Through Dan's songs I
still feel a connection to my father who shared the
same love for Dan's music. He died of cancer in 1996
at the age of 49. My thoughts are with Dan's family
and friends. God bless Dan --- his songs will live
forever in my heart and mind.
Dan Fogelberg got me through all my tough times in high school in Illinois and then in college. I would fall asleep every night listening to him. Dan helped me through some rough boyfriend breakups and through my lonely times and then through the death of my father when I was 19. I was introduced to Dan in 1974 and he will remain a huge part of my memories until I die. ~ Carol Speir Crabb
Dear Jean and all in the Fogelberg family, I feel as though one of my closest family or friends passed on. His impact on me was not just one that an ordinary artist has on most of us. He wrote and sang what was in our hearts as well. We are all better for having his music play in our hearts. I still get chills when I play Nether Lands. Dan will be missed but never forgotten- his legacy will live on. ~ George, N.Y.
How sad I am, as so many others, to hear of Dan's passing. I was just listening
to "Souvenirs" in my car this morning, singing along, being ever so grateful to have listened to and loved his music for so many years. And I didn't even know until later today when a friend called to tell me the news. I just passed my one year anniversary since having surgery for endometrial cancer, so I know a bit about the struggle. Love to all of Dan's family and to all other fans out there who are mourning this loss with me. Sincerely ~ Margaret H.
I was sorry to hear of Dan's passing. He was talented beyond words and I feel like I lost
a personal friend even though we never met. He will live on through his timeless music
but to his family and friends, please accept my sincere heartfelt sympathy. God bless Dan
Fogelberg always. ~
Craig S.
If you had to distill Dan Fogelberg's words and music down to one word it
would have to be "ENCHANTING." His words were so vivid and visual and his
voice and music brought the lyrics to life. I married the "leader of a
band" in Detroit and we both cherish our Dan Fogelberg LPs (yes, LPs!). Even
today we are still mesmerized whenever we hear his music. It had a quality
that is hard to put into words other than his own.
Dan's music and lyrics were a gift and his voice was that of an angel. Dan,
you'll be right at home in Heaven.
Bless you ~
Susan Murphy & Bill Pilipchuk
Dear Mrs. Fogelberg (Jean):
Your husband and his music meant so much to me -
they still do. His music really was and is part of
the soundtrack of my life! I was in my 20s and just
starting out when his first LP was released, and my
spirit soared every time I listened to it. I wore
it out on the turntable! What the lyrics and music
conveyed to me was so in tune with what I was
feeling and thinking and trying to do - Dan and I
were kindred spirits (so I thought, anyway). I
loved that album and I loved that singer-songwriter.
Then his second album came out and I went through
the same love affair all over again! I memorized
the music and lyrics - my God, it was as if I had
written those words and feelings! I stopped cold
every time I'd hear a song of Dan's played on the
radio in Philadelphia and sang every word along with
him. I waited for word that his tour was coming to
a concert hall nearby so I could see him live.
It was like this for years and years, maybe not
always with every song but that didn't matter -
Dan's music and lyrics spoke to me often and I was
listening. My words may be of small consolation to
you now at this time of enormous heartbreak, but my
wish for you is this - I hope you will know and
remember how much your husband's artistry means to
so many of us who, in a small way, traveled this
road with him. His music and lyrics will live
forever and that is a magnificent legacy.
I wish you peace in the New Year and that your heart
is not heavy for too long. You have an angel
watching over you, Miss Jean. Dan will always be
with you - all you have to do is listen.
My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
Respectfully ~
Dee Luther,
Newton, MA
Peace be with You and Your family. Thank You for sharing your talent with us. You will be missed. ~ Karen Goike
So very sad to hear of Dan's passing. He is an inspiration to live life to its fullest, every day. To be kind and thoughtful. He will be missed but I have learned from his beautiful soul. Best wishes to you, Jean and Family. ~Deb in Durango,Co.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Dan's passing. His music has been very important in my
life and the lives of so many of my friends. What a lovely and comforting talent he was,
with a voice that was so beautiful and unique. No one sounded like him. I regret that
we never met.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family. ~
Shawn Colvin
Ah, Dan...your songs yesterday, today and tomorrow inspire and touch all who hear them. I
thought of you when I reread this poem by Mary Frye.
"Don't stand by my grave and weep, for I am not there.
I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond's glint in the snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
In the soft blush of the morning light.
I am the swift bird in flight.
Don't stand by my grave and cry,
I am not there,
I did not die."
You, Dan, are indeed the glint in the snow, autumn's rain, and the blush of morning
light. And so much more. You were loved. And isn't that grand? May you haunt me forever
with your melodies. May kindness touch your loved ones always. With deep affection ~ Vicki
Dear Jean,
I started this Monday morning like any other. I opened Boston.com, and learned about Dan's news. I was so sad. I am just another listener, a fan. I was just a kid when Dan's music came out. I listened to his music throughout the years. When I thought about him this morning, I realized that I grew up with Dan's music around me. Through so many times in my life - happy, heartbreaking. He was there. His music was beautiful. And every one of us, who have ever listened to his songs, has felt as though he has climbed inside our mind and our heart. I understand the pain you feel right now. I lost my mother to cancer when I was only 30 years old. I wanted to curl up next to her and die, right along side her. But I am my mother's daughter. And she always said to me "Linda, that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Such a wise quote. You do go on, and time does heal. And Dan would want that for you. Remember how lucky you are to have had him for the time that you did. And know that so many of us honor Dan, and are sending positive thoughts to pull you along. -Linda
My deepest sympathy to Jean and the family of Dan Fogelberg. Sadly, I never
got to see Dan perform live. I had tickets to see him when the tour was
canceled 3 years ago due to his illness. Dan's music has been a big part of my life
since I was a child. I will forever appreciate the unique and beautiful God
given talent of this gifted musician. May you rest in sweet peace Dan. ~ Kim
Moran
May God bless and keep you. Thank you for blessing us with your music.
Dan, Thank you for the music to live by, love by, fall out of love by and grow
up with. You were a big part of Colorado music since the 1970's and I will miss you. My sincerest condolences to your wife and family. ~ Cathy Crowley, Littleton, CO
Dear Fogelberg Family and Friends:
It was with sadness tonight that I first learned of Dan's passing. It was maybe a parting blessing that I was scanning the radio stations earlier today in the car when I came across his beautiful voice. I suddenly felt settled and secure. "Same Old Lang Syne" was playing and it immediately brought me back to my childhood. I was touched even as a young child never having yet experienced what he sang of but appreciated the touching story it told, all the same. Today after stumbling upon it, it dawned on me how long it had been since I heard that song. It was as beautiful and meaningful today as it was the first time I heard it as a child. God bless you and your entire family while you deal with life without Dan here on earth. I bet he's singing with the angels.
~Lori~
Rochester, NY
My condolences to Jean & Dan's family. I've enjoyed listening to Dan's music since the early 70's. I was lucky enough to have seen him in concert many times over the years. I never thought it would be the last time, but I feel so fortunate that I was able to see him play in CA in 2003. My heart's broken today, but I'm so happy that Dan shared his words & music with all of us. ~ Karen Jean in California
So sorry to let you go, but so thankful your suffering has ended in
peace. Your music has calmed me, entertained me, and sustained me
through many turbulent times in my life. I "grew up" with your music
as part of the soundtrack of my life...to this day, I cannot hear the
opening notes of "Same Old Lang Syne" without my breath catching in
my chest and my eyes welling up with tears. The world has lost a
glorious light. Thank God we still have your legacy of music. Prayers
be with you as you continue on your journey. ~
Lisa in Texas
No other musician quite defined my college experience the way Dan Fogelberg
did. His passing reminds us all that we are given a short time here on
earth, and the best thing that someone can say about us after we are gone,
is that we made a difference. Dan Fogelberg made a difference.
Dan was truly like a member of our family. His words will be with us forever
even if he is not. My thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with his
family & friends, and every single "Dan Fan" out there. ~ Lindsey Durbin La Mirada, CA
Your music made a tremendous impact on my approach to many of
life's
challenges. Thank you. ~
Chad R. Oldham
Dan was always one of my favorites and wrote an especially poignant song called "Same Old Lang Syne." That song meant a lot to me as I saw a marriage fall apart in 2006; as well as remembering an especially bittersweet college romance.
His music was gentle, meaningful and, more often than not, right on the money in observing the fragile state of relationships.
I remember playing his albums back then at Michigan State in the 70s. Many good memories of my dear roommate Leo and I talking about his music, and trying to figure out how to play his songs on our guitars.
I always wanted to see him in concert and, unfortunately, never did.
I will miss his insight.
Deepest condolences to his fans and family. ~
Paul Townley,
Grosse Ile, MI
I have been a fan for years.
Dan was a total musician. His music and words were wonderful, plus he
was talented both on guitar and piano.
I had the honor and pleasure of seeing him in concert more than once,
the last time in 2003. The crowd was not very large, but you could tell
everyone there was there not to just go to a concert, but to see Dan
Fogelberg.
He had a connection with the audience.
It saddens me that we will not have any more songs from this wonderful
artist. When word came of his cancer, I prayed for the best.
The fans only saw the public side of him, but I know that was as
wonderful a person as an artist, you can tell by his songs and seeing
him perform.
He will be greatly missed by his fans.
My deepest sympathy to the family.
I know that he was a great person and you will miss him terribly.
Please know that you have the sympathy and support of many, many people.
Our grief is not the same as yours, but we share in your grief on his
passing.
Thanks for all the great songs and memories, Dan. Though you have journeyed
to the Spirit World, your music will always live on here. ~
Douglas Blue Feather
Dan, your music was and is a part of my life that I cherish, but will live on. Jean, please find comfort in all of our prayers, support, and great memories of Dan. ~ Lin in Houston
I was incredibly saddened to hear of Dan's passing. His music had an impact on my life like no other. I was given the album Captured Angel in the mid-70s, and it felt like it was written about me. "The Last Nail" never fails to bring tears to my eyes when I listen to it. My all time favorite "There's a Place in the World for a Gambler" lives in my heart forever. ~ Kathryn
My sincere condolences to the family of a very talented man who was an inspiration to me from the first time I ever heard his voice in 1972. Peace and love ~ Carla
Dear Jean, May God bring you peace and comfort. Dan Fogelberg was a beautiful human being. He touched so many people's lives with his music. He leaves such a great legacy. I was blessed to have seen him in concert. I love his music. His songs touch your emotions and just carry you away to a beautiful place. God bless you. ~ Lawrence Rowe - North Carolina
To Jean and all of Dan's Family, Friends and many many fans as am I. I just heard the sad news, stunned. I loved his songwriting talent, beautiful voice and soul.
I cannot believe his voice is silent.
He brought me much joy and I thank him for that. "Leader Of The Band" is one of my top favorite songs. It always made me think of my Dad.
God bless you all at this most difficult time. ~
Susan Miller,
Charlotte NC
With great memories of you Dan and your wonderful music, since I was very young
to now a grown woman and mother, still your ballads hold a special place in my
heart. May God hold you now and a heartfelt sympathy extended to your
family. ~
Becky Gordon of Ocala Florida
My husband and I were deeply saddened to hear about Dan's passing. I spent my high school and college years being inspired by his music. May his family find strength in knowing he will live forever through his music. May he rest in peace. ~Christina & Dennis
I have never written or e-mailed anyone outside family, so today upon hearing of the death of Dan I am moved to write these thoughts. He was a part of my high school senior year 1974. I almost cry every time I hear "Same Old Lang Syne."
I feel very sad today because I truly believe one of the greatest musician,
singer and songwriter has passed. I have never listened to any musician that touched me the way that Dan Fogelberg's music did. His
music was truly magical. I know that he is a "free angel" now. I am so glad that I had the chance to see him in concert many times.
Thank you for all that you gave to the world. You will be missed more than words can say.
Words cannot convey the impact Dan's music has had in my life since first
hearing it in the mid '70s. I remember waiting for Souvenirs to be released!
He was a master storyteller and incredible musician. I was lucky enough to
see him in concert four different times. His life and voice will be sorely
missed, but his music will live on -- his gift to us. To his wife and family,
you are in my prayers that you will have the strength to endure the grief of
losing a loved one and the peace that comes with the knowledge and
conviction of God's plan -- for this life truly is "Part of the Plan." I think Dan
knew this too. Bless you all and may your happy memories endure forever! ~ Lisa in Northern California
Thank you for your contribution to the world, Dan. The stories you told through
your music will echo through our hearts for many years to come. Peoria is proud
of her son.
Dan and his songs meant a lot to me. I learned many of them and played them to audiences
around the country. They were always well received. I will miss him during the
remainder of this life, but I hope to hear his new material when I get to the next.
Be well ~
Stephen Taylor
The music...the words......the spirit with which they were put
together. His music changed my life. The first songs I learned to play were
Fogelberg classics. He passed his gift down the line, his music changed
lives, relationships and souls. I will for the rest of my life remember what
he gave me, my friends and my family. "Keep the faith, and we will all be together again" ~ Kevin Moors, Arcadia, Florida
Dan, you changed my life for the better with your beautiful
music. I began playing acoustic guitar after hearing you play, and you
taught me my finger picking style. Thanks for all the wonderful songs, your
outlook on life, and putting music to nature. I will forever be grateful. ~ Terry Ritchie,
Turkey Ridge,
Southern Ohio
You will be missed by so many who heard your sweet voice and the greatest lyrics! May GOD let you shine...
What a huge loss for Dan's family as well as his fans.
I listened to his music throughout my life and each song brings back so many
memories of times that have gone by.
I thank him for that. ~ Wendell Alderson, Sacramento, CA
Dear Mrs. Fogelberg,
I met Dan via the Souvenirs album in 1974 as a just discharged Nixon Vietnam
era draftee. Being about my age, just a year older, Dan touched me with his
music deep into my being and helped me immensely personally during these
very turbulent public and personal times.
I synced with him to the point of allowing myself to wear the same GI issued
shirt he wore on that album cover, during my college years in northern and
southern Illinois. He filled my ears with his talent and passion during many
homework and exam sessions in my little house there.
A new Shure cartridge for the Pioneer turntable today, with a fresh
Discwasher clean and the vinyl is back in play here in my seemingly all
digital household. I am again enchanted by "Illinois" from Souvenirs and
rocked by "Loose Ends" from Nether Lands, pulling me back to 30 year old
memories.
I will in fact follow his advice on the DRE, and just had my PSA checked a
few weeks ago as my Dad passed from prostate cancer a few years ago.
Fortunately we had him for about ten years after his diagnosis.
I am truly sorry for your loss, and feel myself with many millions of others
I am sure, that the world just got a little bit colder this winter.
Wishing I could have told him this myself ~
Michael from Wisconsin
To all of the grieving fans, friends and family of Dan - Which seems so long ago, I witnessed the best concert performance I have ever experienced from Dan in Dayton Ohio. With being raised on his music, I jumped at the chance to see him on stage. With the entire band poised to perfection, Dan Fogelberg moved me to tears. With jeans, blazer jacket, scarf and a Strat, I was brought to my feet the moment the curtains were pulled back and Dan hit the stage. Only to be completely dropped into a personal emotion that many of us have experienced again and again with Dan's music. The curtains were closed while the crew set up his piano..his true voice. "Run for the Roses", "Leader of the Band" to "Same Old Lang Syne". Those moments will always hang in my memories at a moment's grasp.
We all have our special moments where his music has played a part in our lives. My wife and I still become very emotional when we hear his music as we fell in love listening to his melodies. We were one of many stories within "Same Old Lang Syne". We took a few lines from Dan's song and became friends, partners, lovers and family. For all of those memories, we thank you. Dan, you have made your mark on so many of us. Your musical voice and personal fight has reached many of us. As many of us grieve of your loss, your legacy lives on within us. Thank you for being the Leader of our Band. You will never be forgotten. In deepest thoughts to you and your family. ~
Brian Weaver, Dayton Ohio
Dan, you will be missed. I have a close friend of the same age who has prostate
cancer. The "sermon" says enough.
Thank you for the life you lived that gave so much. ~

I feel like a small part of my soul is missing because of Dan's passing. My
husband and I became great "Dan Fans" in the late 70's early 80's. "Dancing Shoes" is my favorite. I'm so sorry for his loss. Rest assured that Dan made
a difference in our lives with his music. My only regret is that my husband
and I didn't know him and his wife on a personal basis. For Christmas this year my husband and I will put on our DF LP's and
toast to his life and music. ~
Vickey K. Gray
That mellow, soulful voice has been silenced. Rest in peace. ~ mo

happiness himself. My sincere sympathies to his family and friends and know
that you are all in my prayers.
God bless his soul.

During my youth, many an hour was passed listening to Dan's music. I
always
anxiously awaited the next album as a robin looks forward to spring. I cried
when I heard of Dan's passing and I rejoice in the difference he made in the
world and for his relief from suffering. ~

I am so sorry that the world lost such an amazing talent. My love and
prayers go out to Jean and his family at the very sad time. I hope there is
comfort in knowing that Dan wrote music that not only touched so many people's
hearts, but is living in their souls. I never met Dan myself but he felt
like a friend to me. His music is what got me thru some hard times and help
me celebrate happy times. I will be forever grateful for the music on Dan
Fogelberg. Thank you Dan for the music and the love you brought to this
world. You will be greatly missed!!! Rest in Peace!

Dan Fogelberg was my favorite male vocalist and he gave me so many years of joy with his music and concerts. Please accept my sincere sympathy~ to his family and friends including all of his fans. I take comfort in feeling he's with his Dad he missed so much. ~

I am simply a fan who has been inspired by Dan Fogelberg since the 70s. Please know that in my heart Dan Fogelberg will always be a poet of the soul. I lost my mother this year to cancer and my consolation is that the mountains and songs of truth will carry me to my home. I just wanted to let those who were blessed to be a part of his life know that Dan Fogelberg's works are a beacon. My prayers are with you and all those who grieve the loss of those who inspired others. ~Tammy, Nashville, TN
Jean, and the whole Fogelberg family: I am truly sorry for your loss. I know he will be greatly missed as a person, friend, husband.
I know his music will live on forever, and that is a great legacy. The world has lost a tremendous talent, one that will not be forgotten. So much of Dan's material is timeless, so take comfort in that a huge part of him will never die. He poured out his heart and bared his soul for everyone to hear and many felt as he did, he helped so many people get through the rough parts of their lives with his music. I feel that he knew that, after reading the legacy so many had posted their warm wishes. I hope he took comfort in that. It's the least we could all do for someone that inspired so many.
Always know that Dan's music will always be some of my all-time favorites because the were songs from the heart.
May your sadness fade and peace fill your heart. ~
Cheryl Olis
How do you say "Goodbye and Thank You" to someone whose music lifted you during good times and bad times?
My heart is broken and my tears flow. To his family and friends, my heartfelt condolences. May God give you strength. ~

I was stunned to hear the news today. I honestly feel like I have lost a true friend,
even though I never even saw him in person. His lyrics inspired me, sometimes saddened
me, yet kept me going through some tough times in my life, going way back into the early
80's. God bless you Dan. I hope to finally meet you some day in the future. ~
Tom Drum
I can only pray that Dan has found the peace and love that he expressed so
profoundly in his music.
He'll always be one of my favorite singer/songwriters. He was the leader of
the band. ~

God bless and keep you. Happy Sailing Dan.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
My deepest sympathy to Jean and all family members.......and fans. Dan was
loved and will be missed. He will live forever in our memories through his
beautiful lyrics. "The Leader of the Band" had a lot of radio play when my Dad
was dying of cancer. It meant a lot to me then and still does. God bless
Dan. ~

I remember late nights in a small town in not far from Peoria, plowing through the darkness with Dan's music coming from the 8 track stereo in my tractor. I can still see an owl swoop into my tractor beams catching a small mouse while "Gambler" was playing, I never felt so humble and small as I did at that moment. Your music took me through so much, High School, College, divorce, the loss of a child. You always brought me hope and joy, I couldn't wait for the next album to carry me forward. May your family find the same peace you often brought me with each sweet song they hear.
Dan Fogelberg was the finest songwriter of our time. Heaven has the best of all things. Dan brings his beautiful music and beautiful self to God.
Thank you for the music and lyrics that you've brought us these so many
years. May God bless your family to go through these days and may your
poems to continue to bring warmth and help to many people in the world.
Dan, rest in the arms of God in peace. ~ John, from Hong Kong.
Today I learned of the passing of Dan, I have considered him for years to
have the finest voice I ever had the pleasure of listening to. His music always
touched me and many a times I attempted to imitate is voice and style. My prayers and thoughts are with you. May his music live on. ~
Paul
Your gift for songwriting and singing will live on forever. Thank you for sharing that amazing gift with so many of us. Fly free and fly far. You will always be the leader of the band.

My hope is this profound soul is just getting started. Here's to his
spectacular physical life - a life lived so well and enjoyed by so many.

very much alive.

"Longer" has always had a special place for me. The song is an inspirational picture for me of what my love should be for my wife. Thanks for everything ~ Jeremiah, Virginia
As his music lives on so does his soul; Blessings to Dan, his wife and family. My
heartfelt sadness for the man I knew only through his music, and his loved ones. Cancer
is never an easy road to walk. I have walked it too many times with loved ones already.
Know that he is now without pain and in the hands of our creator. Be comforted in his
love which remains with you always. ~

"Across the vein of night there cuts a path of searing light burning like a beacon on the edges of our sight" - "Nexus", by Dan Fogelberg
Just such a path of searing light has Dan's life been for me. I've loved
this man for 25 years! I know all the words to his songs and have seen him in
concert a dozen times...in Omaha, Denver, Vail, Pueblo, Cleveland. I
lived in Colorado for a while and marveled at the mountains' magnificence that
inspired some of his work.
His work touched the tendrils of my soul like no one else's ever did. The
power of his playing...the sincerity in his voice...the pure heart in the
poetry of his lyrics. It was to his music I turned in my moments of greatest
travail...and greatest triumph. He wrote what I felt and his musical delivery
seeped into my very bones.
My heart goes out to you, his family. How MUCH he will be missed. May God
grant you peace and strength.
But Dan will always "burn like a beacon on the edge of our sight" because we
have the incredibly beautiful legacy he left us.
To all the fans as well, I bid you solace. Do as I've done this night.
Pull out the albums and CDs and rejoice in the wonder of this amazing talent.
Be glad he touched our lives.
My love to all of you, family and fans alike ~
Sharon
Dan, As the years have gone by and our time and our existence are coming to an eventual end, I pray that you are at peace..As I sit and weep at your passing I never realized how much your lyrics and music impacted me as I grew up with you. Your music will always touch our hearts and inner souls. You truly were a gift from above as I know that is where you will continue playing forever. It is truly a sad day as we mourn your passing. ~ David Shepetofsky, Parlin, NJ
The battle is over for you. May you now rest in peace. We have lost a beautiful voice,
an inspiration, and a beautiful soul. Godspeed, Dan....
Dan's music inspired me to move to Denver Colorado in 1975. I am very sad to learn of his passing. Dan music inspired me to buy a guitar and try to learn to play on my own. I had the opportunity to see him live in concert at Red Rocks on a few occasions.
This may sound silly, but I had such respect for his music and thought that he was the greatest of my generation. I did not have the opportunity to meet Dan, but will always have his music to listen to and share with my wife and sons.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family, may his music and memories live on. ~
David Simmons, 54
When I heard the news of Dan's passing last night it hit me like a ton of bricks. I remember where I was when my father told me he was first diagnosed and I also remember hearing the news that he was doing better. It was only this past summer when I whipped out the "Greatest Hits" CD again when a friend of mine played one of his new songs for me and I told him it sounded quite similar to "The Power of Gold." I am so saddened at his loss, not just because he was part of a dying breed - sensitive soft-rockers with thoughtful lyrics and unique, achingly beautiful melodies who were about the music, not the image - but because he was clearly a lovely person as evidenced by his actions not just on but offstage as well. Just last year my mother observed, when "Same Old Lang Syne" came on the radio, that even for just that one song alone, he will always be remembered in the musical landscape. I know I for one will always sorely miss Dan's presence but also treasure the beauty of the music he left us. ~ Rudy Palma
Godspeed on your journey to your 'Reach'.......
Dan's music and lyrics has enriched my life and will continue to do so. My
husband and I had the pleasure of seeing Dan in concert on many different
occasions in large and small venues and he always left a part of himself with
us. I wish Jean and his family my heartfelt condolences in this very difficult
time. ~ Lisa Bernett, Arapahoe, NC
My thoughts and prayers to Dan's immediate and extended families. Life is short and I'm glad you shared your music with so many. ~ Bill Lane, Tofte, Minnesota
I have never written anyone, of fame--was never moved to do such a thing.
Probably have thought in the past that my email would be insignificant among
the thousands of other letters, cards and emails.
But this is different. I just learned of Dan's passing. His music remains, such a distinctive memory of my days in college; back in the 70's. I
attended TCU in Ft. Worth,
Texas. The parties, dinners with friends or just hanging out with friends
and Dan's music playing in the background.
To this day, his music brings a smile to my face as I reflect on the
wonderful memories that are triggered by the sound of Dan's voice and his music.
Such a comfort at any given moment when I turned on the radio or listened to
one of his albums...yes, I still have his albums!
Please accept my deepest sympathy. Such a great guy, Dan must have been.
Thank you Dan and Jean for the wonderful music he created during a special
time in my life. ~
Paula Leone Mabry,
Argyle, Texas
Dan,
I enjoyed your music and it was a happy part of my youth. Thank you. ~

Jean, I am truly saddened to hear of the death of Dan. My wife and I went to see Dan play at Red Rocks during the 1980's and he was wonderful. He is just 7 months older than I, and I too am dealing with prostate cancer. I learned of my situation early in the process. I wish Dan could have learned earlier of the cancer. His passing has affected us greatly. Our love and best wishes.~ Mike and wife Patty
Many times my brother & I have played together at various functions and
have always included our favorite song "Place in the World for a
Gambler" from weddings to festivals to charities to funerals the message
that this song brings is second to none. I can only hope that there is
a light in the depth of your darkness. My deepest regards. ~
Ron Driedger,
Simcoe, Ontario
Goodbye to one of the great singers/songwriters--and such an inspiration. I read your "sermon" and wept. I have fought prostate cancer for the past year. I was lucky as it was contained but very close to spreading. I hope all men over 50 will heed your advice. If so you will save many lives. Thanks ~ Fred House
I am a classical musician, singer, and teacher. For 30 years I have admired
and loved the music of Dan Fogelberg. I saw him in concert in Tucson, AZ in
the 1980's and appreciated his talent in person. In my opinion, truly a
troubadour. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Our world is suddenly a
sadder place, but know that the music will live on. Sincerely ~ Jackie
Collett
I saw Dan live in 1981 it was a great concert. He was a big part of my teen
years. He will be missed and I am thankful for all the great music he made. My
heart goes out to his family. ~ Jim Fey, Livermore Ca.
Dear Jean, family, & friends:
Dan was and will always be a musical genius and an incredibly beautiful spirit.
The very first time I heard Dan was on the radio and they were playing a song from "Nether Lands".
I was mesmerized and immediately went out and bought the album. It remains a favorite of mine to
this day.
One time I saw Dan playing a concert at Arrow Head Stadium in Kansas City. For some reason, the
band didn't show up, so Dan came out and told the fans that he was going to play anyway, just him
and his guitar. We were all thrilled!! His solo style was amazing! I was so happy and grateful
that he had entertained us in such an intimate, wonderful way--one on one with audience. We sang
along with him and took pictures. It was truly one of the best musical experiences of my life!
My fellow musicians and I love to sit and jam to "Leader of the Band". The harmonies are so much
fun! What a great song Dan gave to us, as are all of his tunes!
I was so sad to hear of Dan's passing this morning. My heart goes out to all of you who loved
him. He left us his spirit in his music. No greater gift could he have given to this world.
Musically yours ~
Tammy Stuckey (Kansas City)
My deepest sympathy to Dan's family and friends.
I must share with you that I was thinking about Dan on my way to work today.
I had not yet heard the terribly sad news of his passing. The radio was on
in the car, but Dan was not on the air. He just came to my mind out of the
blue, and I was thinking about how much I love his songs. Then I remembered
hearing a radio DJ a few days ago say that he is always so happy to play "Same Old Lang Syne" at this time of year. It's one of his favorites.
I also thought back to being in summer camp in 1977 and overhearing my bunk
counselor saying to another bunk counselor, "Dan Fogelberg is playing in
concert! Dan Fogelberg is playing in concert!" I admit I had not yet heard
of Dan at that time, but I'll NEVER forget how excited those counselors were
at the idea of seeing Dan playing in concert. When I later became a fan, I
remembered that incident in camp.
So there I was today, in my car, just thinking about Dan. When I arrived to
work, I turned my computer on, and there was the news of his passing. I was
just devastated. And I would like to believe that Dan somehow reached out
to each and every one of his fans and came into their thoughts, to connect
with them.
He really touched my life with his music, and EVERYONE I know loves "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Leader of the Band", no matter what kind of music they
usually listen to.
I wish for you all strength during this very difficult time, and beautiful,
lasting memories of Dan.~
Stephanie Lambros
Thank you, God for allowing him to be here to spread his wonderful music. He
is now yours to enjoy once again.
I, like so many others, feel as though I lost a dear friend. I can only hope
that Dan realized as fully as possible what a magnificent influence he had
on the lives of his numerous admirers. I hope that his music made HIM as happy as it made us!
Listening to Dan's songs is an act of contemplation, and we will all be able
to enjoy his artistry for generations to come. I am still able to listen to
the same songs as 30 years ago, most especially "Lessons Learned", and get
something new from it depending upon my current life circumstances. And I
continue to marvel at the maturity and beauty of his compositions and lyrics.
Thank you Dan, from my heart and soul for some of the most beautiful songs I
will even listen to, and may God bring comfort, peace and love to all those
close to him, especially his wife Jean.
