There is a hole in our world with Dan's passing. He was a friend, mentor, an inspiration, an artist in the purest sense of the word. All of his lyrics are flooding my mind and heart. We have been so blessed that he has been a part of all our lives. To teach, to learn, to laugh and to cry, he has helped us soothe our hearts, minds, and spirits. Thank you is not nearly enough. May the love and peace that is here for you keep you safe on your next journey. Dear Jean, my heart goes out to you. Thank you for sharing Dan with us through his music. May you find the peace you need and know the love is there for you. And , Dan...from the tops of mountains to the rushing of the sea, may you always run with the whales and let it shine, oh let it shine. Thank you. ~ Joanie, Colorado
You touched our hearts and opened our eyes. Your music will live on in our
lives each and every time you are heard. May our glorious Lord bless you and
your family. Psalm 68:11 ~

He was a wonderful songwriter. He told such stories in his music. Although I never knew him, I'll miss him. We are almost the same age, and his music played through much of my life's story. My thoughts are with his family. ~

Music speaks when words fail. Thank you for the music Dan. You helped me
through some really rough times and touched my soul like no other!
My prayers are with you Jean. ~

At each piano lesson I taught today, I shared Dan's music with my students so
that my enjoyment of his music can inspire the next generation of music lovers.
My condolences to the family. His artistry will be missed. ~

I was so sorry to learn of this gentle soul and brilliant songwriter's death. I had gotten up Sunday morning and lit a candle in memory of the anniversary of my brother's death. I did not learn until today of Dan Fogelberg's death, and now, thinking of yesterday's candle burning brightly for my brother, I see how it was fitting that my brother, who was my biggest musical influence, would have been honored to have shared that burning candlelight tribute with Mr. Fogelberg. Love to my brother...Love to Dan Fogelberg for sharing his words and music. I extend my sympathy to Dan Fogelberg's family. Peace and love to his family, friends and fans ~ Tess Munoz, Corona, California
It's interesting that a person that I've never met or ever got to know can be a
friend and touch my heart through his music. The beauty, strength, and
gracefulness of this individual comes through in his writings and will forever
come through to all who listen with their hearts. Thank you Dan for the gift
you've given us all in this lifetime. We are forever grateful. ~
Gil Caro
Dear Mrs. Fogelberg, family and friends,
I am so terribly saddened to hear of your loss. I hope you all will find some comfort in knowing that Dan the singer/songwriter touched so many lives and hearts through sharing his gifts.

I was trying to think of some long heartfelt speech I could write, but
sometimes it's in the simplicity.
We'll miss you buddy.
My sincere and deeply felt condolences to the Family and Friends of Mr.
Fogelberg. He was a beautiful artist and brought a light to the world.
May your pain be short lived. May your memories be, as mine, forever. ~

Wish I were the poet that you were. In so many ways, your lyrics formed my life -- past, present and future. Your songs sounded out at my father's funeral and now I cry them silently for you. You were/are so brilliant. I wish my love (strength) to Jean for her missing love and partner and you will always be remembered in so many lives. ~ Judy
Believe it or not, you're even an influence to a hard rock band! We rock
your tunes in our van while on tour."I thank you for the music, and stories from the road" - We'll miss you.
Love & Mercy ~ Craig & Dave from Planeside
Dan's music has meant so much to me over the years and I will truly miss him. I had the pleasure of seeing him one time live in concert and was worth the experience. His music meant so much to our family as our leader of the band fought a noble fight to prostate cancer and lost his battle four years later at age 56. "Leader of the Band"always brought back fond memories of our father as the song seemed to be written for such a man. Thank You Dan for your poetic lyrics that will always have a place in our home.
Thanks ~ John
I am saddened by the news of Dan's passing. He was a musical genius, a wonderful songsmith.
Listening to his music now takes on a different dimension, a new meaning.
I am so glad he was here. ~
George Spink, Los Angeles,CA
I feel in love with Dan when I was at Ohio State in the late 70's. I lived in an all-girl's dorm in which his music was a staple! I imagined that I would marry this beautiful man and move away to Colorado. Instead, his music soothed and inspired me through the years that followed. "Dancing Shoes" and "Heart Hotels" remain favorites, as well as "Longer" which was played at my wedding. I was fortunate to see him in concert twice and loved every moment. Thanks for the beautiful music! ~ Joyce, Columbus, Ohio
Jean -- Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Dan's songs have always
meant so much to my wife and me. Now with his passing, there is a new level
of emotion. ~ Jeff Jackson, Bozeman, Montana
Ah, I am just heartsick with the news of Dan's passing. I feel like a part of my youth has just been sealed away. Souvenirs came out the year I graduated from high school and Dan's words and music were, and are, just so...perfect. Yet, what a gift he has left with his recordings, and for that, I am thankful. Each listening will have an added tear, however. Godspeed, Dan Fogelberg; see you on the other side. ~
Craig R. Busskohl,
Oregon
Peace, Dan. You are just a play button away.
Jean. I am so very sorry for your loss. ~

I can't believe it. Strange story...I don't know why, but I had been thinking
about my old girlfriend for a couple of weeks...lo and behold if she didn't
email me right out of the blue. I hadn't heard from her in at least ten
years. Well I couldn't help but think of Dan Fogelberg's song "Same Old Lang Syne" which I also hadn't heard for years...so I thought I'd look up the words today, and I discover this terrible news. I'm so sorry. He was a wonderful songwriter and a beautiful lyricist. He also inspired me to write a song about my own father who also passed away and for me was the leader of my own band. This is a sad day...my heart goes out...God bless you all.
To whom ever reads this and however way you are connected to Dan, I was sad to hear of his passing and also glad his fight and pain is over. I'm lucky to have discovered his music at the age of 14, and I changed from hearing Nether Lands. I started on a separate path from the others in 1978 who were into less complex music. I also got to hear Dan sing in concert at an arena, just him and a piano or guitar. Dan left the earth with a wonderful body of work that will continue to play all over, peace to you Dan, and those who love you. Your work is done......great job! While your physical being has left, your spirit has not, your music will now represent you. ~
Tom Pantaleo
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Fogelberg family. I will be ever grateful for his light that inspired my life in so many ways. Thank you Dan, you will never be forgotten.
This is so very sad, words can't express. Dan's music impacted me many years ago, and I
have always been a fan. My regret for your loss Jean and to the rest of his family, so
very sorry. His gentleness, his wonderful melodies, and his poetry in song will continue.
For those others who are close to him, celebrate a life obviously well lived.~ Karen in
Canada
For all of the songs that brought us such comfort and joy! May he rest in
peace and all that knew him, rejoice in his gift to each of us who appreciated
what his gift was able to give us. The world has lost a tremendous Voice!! May you rest in peace Dan. ~

After reading so many thoughtful, touching and poignant messages deservedly left
for Dan and his family, I am not sure what else is left to say. The only words that I can seem to type at this exact moment are....Thank God for the music and words of Dan Fogelberg. Though he will be missed by millions of people, we are so blessed to be able to continue listening to the gift he gave to us...one that we assuredly can never repay. God Bless and may the very first song I hear after my own departure be one from Dan Fogelberg. Take care and thank you for fighting the fight. ~ Todd E., Concord, North Carolina.
My wife and I have been a fan of Dan for many many years. What a great singer and writer
he was. I would always search Amazon just to find out if he had released anything new.
It was with great sadness that we learned that he had cancer, not long after we saw him
at one of the Concerts on the Pier in Seattle.
He will be greatly missed. His music never grows old, even as some of us boomers who
first listened to him in the 70s and 80 do get older. Our condolences to Dan's wife and
family. He will always have a place in our hearts. ~

An amazing songwriter. His deep lyrics and beautiful phrases inspired me to
strive for excellence. His music will touch me forever- his memory, his music is timeless. Thank you for giving me serious and sophisticated music. God bless. ~ jrc
I was fortunate enough to see Dan in an outdoor concert on Boston Common. He
had just started the show and the Park Street Church bells went off in the
middle of the set. He stopped until the chiming bell concluded. He quipped
that music seemed a bit more important.
His music touched so many people because it was truly genuine. Thank you for
those memories and the soundtrack of our lives. God Bless you Dan and your
family. ~

Today, the pure voice of an angel has been silenced. I am so sad. Thank God, Dan's music will live on for generations to come. The body of work Dan left behind is truly phenomenal. We have all been beneficiaries of his God-given talents and gifts. God is well pleased with the immeasurable contributions Dan made to the world. His clear and powerful voice will blend in well with the Heavenly Choir. Dan, your spirit is finally free...onward and upward dear brother. Godspeed, Jean. ~ Ron Rafn - Salem, Oregon
To Dan's family and friends,
I am so sorry for your loss. He seemed like such a special person. I am sure he was. Of course his music was the only way I knew him, but the countless hours of listening and the very special times my husband and I spent at his concerts made him feel a part of my life. Heck, his music has helped define my life. I am sad that there will be no new music. But the music he gave us will last forever. Thank you Dan Fogelberg. We will miss you so much. I am so sorry. Cancer Sucks. Sincerely ~ Kim Garrison-Kleinrock
You will be sadly missed. Your music helped me get through some tough times while I was in college. I hope they will put out a Dan Fogelberg's Best CD. For your family... I am so sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in knowing he and his music touched so many lives. May you rest in peace.
God Bless. ~

To Dan's Family.......I can never adequately express the effect
Dan's music has had on my life for many years now. From the second that I
was introduced to "Home Free", I knew that I had found a kindred spirit in
my outlook on what real music should be - a peaceful place to go when
the rest of the world just doesn't get it. Dan "got it" and in doing so, he took a part of my soul with him. It is my
sincere hope that his music will live on in the hearts and memories of his
many loving fans. I know
that he will always have a special place in my heart and soul. Thank you
for allowing me to express my feelings today. I was Christmas shopping
in a store and the radio station that was piped in broke the news after
playing "Same Old Land Syne". At that moment, my heart broke, but I then
found comfort in knowing that God only takes the very best in His own time.
May the pain of Dan's passing soon be replaced by the warmth of the
memories. What a treasure he was!
With the Peace of Christ in my Heart, Thank You Dan. ~
Ann Grassie
Many times I used Dan's songs to say what I was unable to say. He found perfection in the way he would weave his lyrics throughout his melodies. My old friend is now going on to spread his heavenly song to those who never knew him, but will. ~ Dennis J Huff,
Spring, TX
In memory of talented musician, Dan Fogelberg..a man who inhaled the
beauty of life and then shared it with others via his music. May his wife Jean find comfort in the many memories she had with him and knowing he is now in
heaven with his father. May Dan rest in peace. ~Cheryl~
"Same Old Lang Syne" one of my all time favorites...never fails to move me. Your family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace. ~

Dan the Man is gone. It's a sad day! Ever since that fateful day in New Jersey '72, when I first heard "To The Morning", my life was forever changed. Thanks Dan! You inspired and lit a fire, not to mention the great songs of yours I played through the years. Always a fan ~ Richard from Colorado
Dan was a real inspiration to me. As a musician in my youth, hearing his songs and
watching him realize his dreams inspired me to do the same. It's hard to believe he has
left his human body, yet I know he is in an even more highly evolved star of being now.
Keep shining, Dan. Keep making beautiful music from beyond.
Love ~
Lindsay Tomasic
Your Spirit lives on through your music. My deepest sympathies and condolences to Dan's wife and family. God Bless each of you. ~ Paul
There simply are no words. How do we begin to speak of a Spirit who has given so much, in so many ways, for such a long time, and to so many? How do we grasp this, now, so heavily felt earthly absence? Bless you, Jean, as well as the rest of Dan's family -- know that our thoughts and love are with you... ~ Terri, WA State
Dan was an inspiration and a spirit that graced my life and filled my
soul with his music many times when it was needed. The leader of the
band has died but his living legacy lives on. God bless you, man. ~
Patrick DeBacker
Dan's music touched my heart and soul.
In 1974, at the age of 15, my dear friend Brenda turned me on to "Part of the
Plan"...and I have been a fan ever since.
Growing up in Indiana and attending Purdue University (less than 3 hours to
University of Illinois ..where Dan attended college). I was blessed to have
seen him perform live several times.
His place in music history is among some of the finest singer/songwriters
of my generation.
Gordon Lightfoot's music along with Dan's was like your favorite pair of
jeans on a warm fall Saturday. It just felt right.
I can't travel without your music. Several of your albums grace my I-Pod and
I too have a very special place in my heart for Colorado.
You are loved and missed my friend.
Thanks for the ride...you were a most gracious tour guide.
Cheers ~
Jeffrey Wine,
Phoenix,Arizona
My thoughts and prayers are with you all this evening.
A special thank you to Dan for sharing his gift with
all of us. Peace. ~

I didn't know you personally, Dan, but you were one of the most prevalent voices on the soundtrack of my life. I wept for your family and for all of us
who lost your beautiful clear voice and your wonderful music and lyrics.
Love to your family and peace to all of you. ~ Denise D
Your music buoyed me through dark times in the late 70s, and your songs are always a
comfort. We will miss you, Dan.

"I know he's not really gone, she said, but the world still feels smaller to me today"...'Smaller World' by Brian Andreas
To Dan: my world definitely feels smaller after hearing of your passing. I'm glad you're not suffering anymore, but I'm so very sad that you're gone. Your music and your words are totally interwoven into the last 35 years of my life. Thank you for helping me through all those times, both good and bad, and for giving voice to the things I needed to say, but I couldn't find the right words for. You'll live on in my heart forever...Love ~ PJ
Dan, I can't even express my feelings for your music. As a teen in the 70's you were my idol (unbeknownst to you I was supposed to marry you-those crazy teen years) and I took your music everywhere. "Part of the Plan" did it and I had to have every new album that you created after I heard that song. Every friend of mine then became your fan and we went to every concert you gave in central Indiana. You were the best concert ("Nether Lands" at Starlight Musicals at Butler University on the most beautiful starlit night ever), and you were my last concert I attended in my 40's (your last stop at Deer Creek) where I had to still flick my lighter to "There's a Place in the World for a Gambler". I have so many favorite songs from you, and I have now passed your musical legacy to my children who enjoy your music also. Thanks for sharing your beautiful songs with me. What a gift God gave us with you. I know you will enjoy entertaining the heavens. ~ AG
Mrs. Fogelberg,
As someone whom lost their mate of natural causes; I understand. I know your pain and anguish, your hope and peace. You've 'lost' your other half, that which made you whole. And yet you haven't. Dan is still here living on in your heart, your memories, and your very soul. My prayers to you.
Yes, Dan Fogelberg's music will live on to help continue his memory. I have always felt he had become a 'piece of Americana' for his music has touched me becoming a part of my life. The songs he created and sang that I have heard help me to remember some of the best parts of my life. May those songs do the same for you.
To Mr. Dan Fogelberg, thank you. Thank you for the music that has helped and inspired me in my life.
Again, My prayers to you. ~
David J. Strasser - a fan.
My prayers are with the family. ~

From one Dan to another, and 56 as well, your journey continues, but in a different place. I saw you all so many years ago at a special place called Tanglewood in Massachusetts with my wife and a special memory it is for the two of us. You will be remembered fondly and your music is ours to treasure forever. Sweet prince rest in peace and Godspeed to your family. ~Dan in Cohoes,NY
Wonderful music. Wonderful person. I once sewed his ski pants at a
cleaners in Colorado, he was very kind, even to a young kid working at a cleaners!
My prayers to his family. I hope he saves other lives even in his passing. ~
Lisa Clay
Dan, I always loved you yet never knew you. Your passing tears a part of my soul. Your music touched my heart and so well expressed and deepened my experiences with my life and my friends, my hopes, my dreams. You were there through it all. With tears and great love for you I cherish and honor the gift of eloquent and beautiful expression you have given to the better side of our human nature, the depths of emotion we share,
in the best of the love in our hearts. Forever you are my hero.
See you in heaven. Love ~ Peggy
To all,
We have lost a beautiful person and should mourn Dan's departure. I am of the generation touched so skillfully by his music. His words shaped my life, his music inspired me and the man gave me comfort in a cruel world.
You will be missed desperately Dan Fogelberg. Rest in peace.
Sadly ~

Dan - I can remember putting your records on every night and I would fall
asleep to that beautiful music. When I was sad and alone you were there. You
helped shape me as a person and a songwriter. You will never be forgotten. ~

Dear Family -
I am saddened by this loss. Dan Fogelberg always
touched me with
his music and lyrics in a way no other one did. His
music helped get me
through high school. I pray that you are
comforted by this. And know that he is not in pain,

Dan Fogelberg has been my all time favorite musician for over thirty years - bringing me much solace in my tumultuous teen years and enriching my life from that point forward. His music was always something I could turn to for peace and comfort. I was fortunate enough to finally see him in concert a few years ago at the Bloomsburg Fair in Pennsylvania - a dream come true. It was something I wanted to experience from the time I first heard his music in the early seventies. It was everything I had imagined it would be and remains my most memorable concert. I only wish I could have somehow met him, as he was certainly an individual worth meeting. I am so saddened by this loss and feel a part of my life has been laid to rest as well, though I will continue to remain one of his biggest fans and will never stop listening to and praising his music. He will remain my all time favorite and will never really be gone to me. My most sincere condolences to you, Jean, and to his family and close friends at this most difficult time. I can only wish that you find peace in the legacy he left behind and in knowing how many lives he touched. Thank-you, Dan, and as you join the "Leader of the Band" may you continue to touch souls with your music as you venture into the next phase of your journey and make the most of this "Part of the Plan." Most Sincerely ~ Amy C. - Kingston, PA.
Thank you for all the great
music and memories.
God bless you Dan.
I was first introduced to Dan's music when "Home Free" was released. I have and listen to all of his records all the time. I got a chance to meet Dan in 1979. He was a man who didn't let the fact that he was experiencing fame affect him. He was down to earth. This was conveyed in his music. I finally got the opportunity to see him in concert in Sioux City at the auditorium. My wife knew how big a fan I was and got me front row tickets for the show. I am a guitar player and have made it my goal to play Dan's music flawlessly, as well as let his spirit influence the music I write. I will miss him, as will many other people, but, his music and message will live on. I wish to give my condolences to his family, as their loss is greater than the loss of all of the fans. Dan was a man who believed in family and his convictions, and his music and messages will live on forever.
"death is there to keep us honest, and constantly remind us we are free"
-Dan Fogelberg "Ghosts"-
You are free now, Daniel. The ghosts of your memory are left behind in the hearts of the countless thousands of souls whom you and your music touched. You are now "Home Free" and for that we must be grateful, although we grieve the loss of your luminous contributions to us in our forlorn Shadowlands. You are now set free to join in the "River of Souls" who, by Grace alone, will enter into the joy of Him whose humble birth we celebrate in just a week's short time hence. In whose "life was the light of men" (John 1:4) "Blessed the traveler who journeys the length of the Light" ~ Jere White, San Antonio, Texas

You were the sweetest voice in my collection of music. I will truly miss not hearing another new song. A piece of my youth is gone forever, but heaven is rejoicing!! I'll miss you. ~ Terri
Dan Fogelberg touched my life with the beauty of his music. Talented, sensitive, beautiful, he had a certain look in his eyes, something like peace. I will never forget how his music makes me feel, and I will never forget him. To his friends and family: my deepest sympathies go out to you. He was a beautiful human being. Thank you for sharing him with the world. ~

There's a magic every moment. It is true. The leader of the band has died. It
is gravely true. I grew up with Dan forging my path, although he never knew
it. I am like hundreds, thousands, even millions who were touched and
inspired by his golden words. God Bless you Dan, and peace be with you,
Jean. My heart is heavily sad. ~ Nancy, Columbus Ohio.
Jean, my heart was so heavy with sadness when I heard the news today. Dan's
music touched my heart deeply. He will be missed. You and your family are in
my thoughts and prayers. God Bless ~ Sue - Corona, CA
I was awakened by a phone call from my sister this morning. Her first words
were, "I just heard about Dan Fogelberg. I just was thinking of you and wanted to say how sorry I am that he's passed on..."
Dan never met me. And my youngest sister and I rarely even get the chance to communicate anymore. But that phone call says it all. I've been so well-acquainted with him for over 30 years now that my sister instinctively knew how deeply I'd be feeling his loss. Long since having drifted apart, I was very nearly stunned for a moment -- amazed to recall that she ever knew me so well. I wondered how she could remember how much I loved Dan's music -- a subject we hadn't discussed in over twenty-five years. Then suddenly I realized the obvious: How could anyone forget?
Dan's music accompanied nearly every milestone of my 'adult' life. In high school I began to understand that I was part of the plan... My freshman year of college as an undergrad music major, strains of the Twin Sons album's tunes could be heard swirling around the halls outside the practice rooms of pianists, flautists and guitarists. The first night I spent in the dorm room of the girl who made my own chains fall free, the entire Phoenix album played on an endless loop until dawn... And as I emerged from my own innocent age, Dan's music made the trip to Ann Arbor with me (along with the woman who was to be my wife) from Charlotte as I successfully auditioned to be part of the first ever musical theater class at the University of Michigan.
I could, of course, go on and on. But I'll save some just for myself. I'm forty-six years old now. And I've been married for over half of that time. Much has passed in my life -- individuals have come and gone. Yet thru it all I have known Dan Fogelberg. His voice and talents have given expression to--and provided the accompaniment for--virtually every kind of emotion I've ever felt. His music has brought me joy, peace, comfort. It has at various times stirred me to both action and inaction --to move forward as well as backward-- but always, ultimately, ever onward.
Few artists have the compositional skill necessary to create such a diverse body of work that allows at least some appeal for literally every listener. But Dan did. Years ago I began telling anyone who'd listen that if I were ever stranded on the proverbial desert island I could make it as long as I had all of Dan's music with me. Quite literally all my musical needs are met collectively thru his recorded talents. There was a lot of music in him; he certainly had something to 'say'-- and it absolutely spoke to me. It lives in all of us now. And as we continue to take from the vastness of Dan's 'reach' all he has to teach, the depths of our souls will forever be filled with the essence of this marvelous musician. ~
Marty -- North Carolina
....through my tears, Dan really did leave a wonderful legacy of poetry,
thoughts and love. My heartfelt wishes to his Mom and his wife. I just know
from the gravity of his songs, he loved you both so deeply. I do believe you two seemed to have been his joy in life, but you are blessed for having known
him and being his inspiration. May the love of God shine on you both. Shalom ~ Lesleigh Hershkowitz
Dear Jean: May you find a lasting peace that can only come from above at this difficult time. Your husband touched so many lives with his words and melodies. They will live on to touch new generations. Blessings ~ Frank Walker, Gig Harbor, WA

Shock and sadness. Sigh. ~ KJ
Rest in peace old friend. As you are an old friend to us. My wife and I have
always been fans of yours - since the early eighties anyway - and your music has
been with us on so many special occasions. I only wish we could have given you
back in equal measure what you gave to us. We are truly sad that you're gone. But
if this was one of your songs, youd surely end with a positive. You're free from pain, you're free to roam the wilderness you love. Our very solemn condolences to Jean and your family. You will live on forever in our family. ~ Ray & Kirsten Mattos, Placerville CA
Dan, I'm very sad today learning of your passing to Heaven. Your music
and your words have always been SO close to me and have shaped my life
in some ways. I miss you! ~ Jeff Hurst, San Diego, CA
Dan Fogelberg was America's greatest poet of the latter half of the
twentieth Century. There is a void left filled only by great words and songs
as played by a master of his time. ~ AC & SS WHITE FL
I just heard the news this evening on the news. My heart sank. Then my mind and heart raced back to the 70s and 80's where his music and lyrics held my life's soul and spirit in his hands. His music was a "kindred spirit" in my times of heartache, love-lost, learning to hang-on, love again, and rebuild my life into new and better times. I was young, in my twenties and early thirties. His music resonated with and sustained me on so many levels. May I simply say that I truly loved him and his beautiful music in a special way, and the gifts he so generously bestowed to us through the music he shared. I had always held out hope to see him just one more time in concert here in San Diego. Now that dream too must die. Dearest Jean, my heart is deeply saddened for you and that of your families. May God's peace and that of the places and people he held dear in his life bring your souls together forever. ~ Kim
My deepest and heartfelt thoughts goes out to him, for the gift he left in
my soul. RIP..

'A punch to the gut'. It's the only real way my feelings of loss can be adequately described tonight. This sense of loss today is very similar in nature to the day I heard that John Lennon had been killed. The world was suddenly missing something very special and dear to it. So I'll grieve today for an artist that I feel I knew personally, but in reality only from afar at his concerts. I feel as though I've lost a brother and a mentor. I've always known that Dan's musical influence lived in my own music. I'm very proud of that. My thoughts and prayers go out tonight for Dan's family and to the rest of his fans. ~ Rand Milone
As a longtime fan of Dan Fogelberg I was saddened to learn of his
passing. I had the opportunity to interview Dan in 1997 while he was in
San Diego for a show at Humphrey's on Shelter Island. We talked about
many aspects of his career and I really felt his passion for life and
his music. Being a guitarist myself, Dan has been a huge inspiration in
my playing style and passion for music. Dan will truly be missed but we know that he lives on in the music that
has touched our lives.
Mr. Fogelberg,
Your music made life beautiful. Leonard (my brother), Gizmo, Jesse, Richard, and the rest of the Drake Avenue, CCHS, St.M.U., & Lambda Chi boys will miss you for the rest of our days. We studied your music and felt somewhat accomplished when we finally learned your tunes on guitar and bass. Leonard and his wife celebrated their wedding with your loving tune, "Longer". On behalf of our extended family in San Antonio, we will miss you. ~ RGomez
The world must once again weep farewell to a truly gifted man of music . . . and a gift of music whose heart whispered oh so sweet. ~ Darren
I cannot be as eloquent as others who have written, but nonetheless, I feel
compelled to write something. Having worked in the record business in the 70s, I vividly remember when "Home Free" was released. Since that time, Dan Fogelberg music has never been too far away from my turntable and has always been in my head and heart. I had the distinct privilege of working with Dan on a few of his early records and concerts. He was always a gentleman and a gentle man. Dan's music is as important to the history of music in the 70s and 80s as the Tin Pan Alley writers were to the 20s and 30s and the Brill Building writers were to the 50s and 60s. His contributions to American Popular Music are incalculable. I did not cry when Hendrix, Joplin and Morrison passed away. I didn't cry when John Lennon and George Harrison left us; but I cried yesterday when I heard about Dan. My sincere condolences to Dan's family and to all of us who appreciated and admired Dan Fogelberg. ~ DW, Phoenix, Arizona
Such tragic news - Dan your passing is an immeasurable loss to the
conscious World. Thank you for sharing the beauty of your inner soul
with us mere mortals. ~ Malcolm - Melbourne Australia
Dear Dan,
When I was a girl your music brought a world of true romance to my young heart - a
feeling I can still remember to this day: bittersweet, a walk in the woods, love meant to
be and not meant to be. I thought of you today, December 17, 2007, when another Dan's cd
caught my eye - I thought it was you. I hadn't even heard that you left us. Thank you
for giving me a feeling so long ago, when I was just a girl, that I can still remember
and feel to the core to this day as a woman in her 40s. My heart goes out to your Jean. ~ Cynthia
I have loved the music of Dan Fogelberg for almost 30 years and was privileged to see him twice at Red Rocks. I am blessed by his music and thank God so much for the talent and heart he gave Dan to put into his music. My prayers and sympathy go to his family. I enjoy his music as much today as I did when I heard "Longer" for the first time and became a fan.
We called him "The Poet Laureate of Colorado" when he was there and were fortunate to hear him perform at Red Rocks. Such beautiful music that still touches so many people all around the world...and we were lucky to have him on this Earth for too short a time. A great loss also for his work on the environment and for Native Americans. He will be missed, but we have the legacy of his music to comfort us. ~ Susan ~ Georgia
I am very saddened by Dan Fogelberg's passing. I was in my 20's when I discovered his music in the 1970's and I have loved just about every song he recorded. I have many memories of where I was in my life during certain songs of his. May God comfort his loved ones and that he has a place in Heaven. Sincerely ~ Kerry Schlieder
Dear Jean, family and friends of Dan,
I am so deeply sorry for your loss.
I am thankful that God spared him any further physical suffering on this
earth and guided him to a very special place in heaven.
I pray that God will provide for you now, in your time of sorrow, and grant
you serenity and peace.
I will always be grateful to God for the gift of life of Dan Fogelberg to
the universe, and the way he touched our hearts and souls so profoundly with
his music, along with his passions for love, life, the environment, and
education of prostate cancer. God bless you. ~ Ruth Sorge Highlands Ranch, CO
I always loved your song "Same Old Lang Syne." Especially since I had the same experience that you so articulately illustrated in that song. My best to your family, who are no doubt in great pain. I know your pain, since I lost my precious brother (a police officer) recently at the age of 32. Hang in there, Dan would want you to. Love ~ Marla
God Bless you in this very sad time.
He will be missed by so many. ~ a long time fan from Illinois.
Dan Fogelberg's voice and songs exemplify my youth and love for his music. From "Souvenirs" to "Captured Angel", "The Innocent Age", on and on, his musical soul and legacy will outlive the body by an eternity. As long as there are singer/songwriters, there will always be a deep love and affinity for Dan and his music. His connection to spirit made him so peaceful and honest. His name will also be synonymous with the "L.A. Sound", along with Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. The production and attention to perfection in both musical and vocal performance of the mid-seventies was the first time I really ever heard music jump off the radio the way it did.
I am a professional (lesser) musician who actually covers some of Dan's songs, and we will continue to do so with pride and excellence, imagining he is in the audience listening with a smile on his face. I am deeply saddened by his passing, but am consoled in the fact that if there is a better place, he is there. We should all be so fortunate to have so many people care when we pass. All any musician/artist/human being wants to do on this Earth is to contribute something special and be remembered for what they did and believed in. Thank You, Dan Fogelberg, you will be missed. ~ Tom Kennedy Tonasket, WA
I feel like I've lost a part of me. Dan Fogelberg's music was woven into
the
fiber of my life in the 70's. Many memories were made alongside the songs of
his albums released in the 70's and early 80's. The songs on Nether Lands carried me through what was a most tumultuous time in my life. I love them
all and will continue to enjoy them with the bittersweet sadness of knowing
he is gone. I know there's a place for him in "Rock 'N Roll Heaven!" ~ Jeanne Breault
The music and songs of Dan Fogelberg have always been a favorite of mine, since the mid
70's when I lived in Denver. His heartfelt songs reached into places of sadness inside me
and gave me hope and joy so many times. I am sad for Dan's family and hope your memories will cling to you as I am sure his love for you will, too. I still listen regularly to Dan's songs and am glad that he was a part of my life, too. love to all. ~ Catherine S. Albuquerque, NM
It is with great sadness to learn of Dan's passing and my thoughts are with his family. We have lost a major talent in this man's going too soon. I have always loved those musicians who had a story to tell, could write and put it to music and then present it as well as he did. Again my condolence to his family and friends. ~ dave wells , victoria harbour, ontario
Dan, No one's music ever meant more to me than yours. My husband Mark
played your album "The Innocent Age" for me when we were first dating In 1982, and I fell in love with your music right then. At our wedding we danced our first dance together to "Longer", and every year on our anniversary (20 years next month), we listen to that song. One of my greatest memories was getting first row center seats to see you and your band in concert at the Greek Theater in LA (15 or so years ago). I made eye contact with members of your band several times, as I was the woman in the front row that knew every word to every song. Dan, I'm so grateful for you. ~ Kim.
To the family of Dan Fogelberg - you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Godspeed Dan. Our hearts are heavy now but your music will be with us forever. Thank you. ~
Your fans in Alabama.
Please know that Dan Fogelberg's light will never go out because his beautiful spirit will continue to live on in his music. I wish his family strength and comfort in this difficult time. Many blessings ~ Bobbi Bornstein
I will always be grateful to Dan for the beautiful amazing music. It has been a constant
companion in my life since I discovered it over 30 years ago and will continue with me
for the rest of my life. What a gift. Thank you Dan. Peace ~ Cheryl
We were very sad to hear that Mr. Fogelberg is gone. We never had the
opportunity to meet him, although we were ecstatic to be able to attend a "Concert
on the Pier" he performed in Seattle in the late 90's. It was a beautiful
night and many sailboats were sailing back and forth by the pier to add to the
ambience of the evening. We have been sailors for years and have enjoyed listening to his music in
many different anchorages. His words and music spoke to us of a gentle soul
who we would have loved to meet. Listening to "The Minstrel", we felt like we
were there. I know the entire world is feeling the loss of such a fine musician and
person. Our prayers go out to his family and friends. Because of your message, I am
making my husband an appointment to get checked. I know that not only will
Mr. Fogelberg be remembered for his music, but also for his message regarding
Prostate Cancer and the lives he may be saving. ~ Gayle and Roy Chambers
I cannot begin to tell you how much some of your music has meant to me. I know you are
gone from this earth, but your music will continue to live on in our hearts! Our prayers
are with you, now, Jean. ~ Gloria Haworth
I am glad I have a record player - I will pull out "Souvenirs" and play it
when guests come over this weekend. I am grateful to have had such great
music to listen to growing up! So sad to hear the news though. Take good
care of yourselves. ~ Brynne Poole - Winfield, IL
My son, friends and I wish to express our condolences to Dan Fogelberg's family.
Dan was truly an artist; being a composer and musician. He refined the
expression of being passionate about living, love, family and many other things
to a fine art. Among those was showing others that expressing yourself could be
a blessing to others. Our prayers are with you. ~ Helen and David Moyle
I've known Dan through his music since "Home free", and had the pleasure of
his live performances over the years. He has and will continue to inspire me
in my life and music. Thanks Dan, Godspeed. ~ Peter, Gig Harbor Wa
Dear Jean and surviving loved ones,
My prayers of support and strength are with you.
The much too soon loss of Dan Fogelberg is a tragedy.
During my teens and twenties, his music meant so much to me personally and gave many, many hours of joy and comfort.
Today, his songs immediately transport me to those fond memories of youth.
Such is the power of music.
Such was the gift he gave to us all. May God give you strength and comfort this day forward. Sincerely ~ Buster
My heart is saddened and very sorrowful today of learning of Dan's passing.
I've always loved his music, he was such a wonderful singer and musician. My
love, thoughts and prayers go out to Jean and his family. Truly God looked
down upon Dan and wanted him to be with Him. I believe that the angels from
Heaven came into that room and took him by the hand, and ushered him into the
arms of God. He is no longer suffering, but is made whole. I know that his
family is hurting, but we will continue to pray for them that God will comfort
them, and wrap His arms around them, as He did for Dan. And one day soon, they
will all be together with Dan again, and we'll be hearing the wonderful praises
that he will be singing to our Lord! ~Liz B.~
My heart holds a sadness tonight. I think of the beautiful music that will live on, though. I have had Dan on my mind recently, so today when I saw the news, I knew why. I hope that where he is now, he is at peace and has no pain. And I thank you, Dan Fogelberg, for sharing your gift with me. You have a place in my heart always.
Yours ~
Linda Matson, New York
Dan's family, God Bless and keep you strong. I have always loved Dan's song "Longer". My husband and I had it played during our Wedding Ceremony in 1983. We always felt like it was our song. I wish that I had told Dan how we loved his songs before this. You are all in our prayers and thought's at this time. ~ Veronica, Plainfield, IL
I first heard Dan's songs on the album - "Twin Sons of Different Mothers". I
am a flutist and to this day no songs touch me more. I played flute and my
husband sang "Longer" at my sister's wedding. I listen to Dan's songs so
often and always hear something new and wonderful in his voice. I was able
to hear one of his concerts in Reno, Nevada a few years ago and it was a
highlight in my life. I am truly saddened for all of us but especially for
his family. My heart aches for your loss - and all of ours. ~ Martha Damon O'Neill
After nearly four decades of following the words and music of Dan Fogelberg, his
voice is
today stilled. But his music and his words, companions on my own journey of the last 35
years, now take on an even more gracious poignancy -- with songs like "Scarecrow's Dream"
and "Leader of the Band" shining even brighter through the tears of the loss. There is a
majesty in songs like the two just mentioned, along with many others like "Run For The
Roses" and "Nether Lands" -- it is a beauty drawn from a soul that drank deep the
understanding that life is drawn not merely from random chance but from something more
noble, beautiful, connected, enduring and far-reaching. Dan sang of things that were
deceptively direct in their simplicity but which were so filled with the glimpse and the
struggle to connect with true meaning in life. He found the honor that comes when frailty
is covered over with mercy. Through his eyes and words, Dan taught me to love my own
father more and to reach into life and drink it deep, letting the weakness draw us closer
-- for the frailty is part of our wiring and one day the spark will cease. You shared
your own dreams, your thoughts, the extent of your reach and the places where your hands
failed and came up with only shattered pieces. For your honesty and your all too human
but true nobility, I am grateful to have shared some of these beauties and struggles
through your music. As I think of the close of your life, I remember your words from "
Nether Lands": "Off in the Nether Lands I heard the sound, like the beating of heavenly
wings and deep in my brain I can hear a refrain of my soul as she rises and sings,
anthems to glory and anthems to love and hymns filled with earthly delight. Like the
songs that the darkness composes to worship the light." Long ago you pondered that there
is a place in the world for a gambler, and indeed there must be -- it is a place of
beauty, simplicity, of children, of honor, of a love that goes beyond one's self. I have
no doubt that you fit in quite nicely, Dan. Our blessings and prayers to you, Jean, in this time of sorrow. Though our sorrow is easily not as yours, our own is quite real and we wanted to share it with you in this
time of grief. Our love and prayers to you and your family in these trying times. We hope
that in some small way that you find a spark of comfort in our words. ~ Ron & Kathlyn Lindeboom
Dan, thanks for the beautiful gift of music. I've listened to you since I was a teenager and continue to do so. I will miss you. ~ Tim
I have played his music every year for at least 20 years.
I will continue to do so... I'm wishing on a "Serengeti Moon". Thank you Dan.
Dan was one of the few ideal musicians. He lacked no talent and his music came from his heart and was inspirational. May he rest in Christ Jesus.
To the Dan Fogelberg Family:
I was very sorry to hear of your loss. Dan Fogelberg was my "American Idol"
for so many years, and his songs still touch my heart as they did when I
first heard them over 30 years ago. As a teenager, I fell in love with Dan
and his music, and have never forgotten what his songs meant to me. Auld
Lang Syne, Dan, I hope you are resting in peace with no more suffering. God
Bless you and your family. ~ Linda Crone Virginia
Our hearts have been very sad since learning of Dan's passing yesterday afternoon. My wife and I have followed Dan since the early 70's when we first purchased "Home Free" and then every album thereafter. He has touched our lives and we are forever grateful. To Jean, to his family and to his friends thank you for sharing so much of Dan with us. At a time like this words seem so powerless to express the thoughts this message is intended to bring. We hope you'll understand what words must leave unspoken and know the heartfelt sympathy that to comes to you today. In peace ~ Gary and Lisa P.
Dan, thanks so much for the great inspirations your music brought to me. I came
to love you late in life due to the influence of a dear friend, but love you I
and my wife did.
To your family we offer our heart felt condolences and prayers for comfort and remembrances of wonderful memories. Blessings ~ Johnnie and Carolyn McNellie
First of all, let me offer my heartfelt condolences to the people close to
Dan that are now left without him in their lives. Though nothing will ever
fill that void, please take comfort in the fact that he touched many, many
lives with his music. Although I was aware of some of his songs previously, I first really became
familiar with Dan Fogelberg's music while in College in Sarnia, Ontario in
the mid eighties. I found the College experience very stressful for a
number of reasons, including being away from my home town for an extended
period for the first time and also the burden of my school work. I
designated Sunday nights as my 'quiet time' in which I tried as best I could
to unwind from a hard week before starting a new one. To do this, I locked
my residence room door, turned off the lights, and listened over and over to
Dan's Greatest Hits (on cassette) on the headphones. Doing this not only
relaxed me, it transported me from my reality to a place where I
contemplated love and loss, triumph and tragedy, honor and heartache
through Dan's songs. I was particularly touched by songs such as "Longer",
"Leader of the Band", "Run For The Roses" and "Same Old Lang Syne". Dan was a great storyteller, and I felt the passion he had for his music and
his world through those songs . I view him as a craftsman in the same way a
carpenter shapes the wood into a sturdy finished product that can not only
be enjoyed for its beauty, but also provide the recipient with comfort. I
am thankful for the gifts Dan gave to us all through his songs and saddened
that he had to leave this world so young. Again, my best wishes, thoughts and prayers to Dan's family and circle of
friends. We are all poorer for his loss, but richer in our hearts for
having heard his music. Sincerely ~ Cory McCrindle
It is a sad day for the world has lost a beautiful person inside and out. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. His music will live on forever....he is timeless...and will be missed dearly. Sincerely ~ Julie Martin, La Vernia Tx
