Dear Jean & Dan's Family,
Since I was thirteen Dan has been in my life. I've grown into adulthood with
Dan's music being part of my very soul. I've dreaded this day my whole life but never
imagined it to end this way.
There are few things in life that are a simple and wonderful gifts in an otherwise, crazy
world. Dan's words and music fill my life will simple joy, throughout and always will. I find myself overwhelmed with a sense of loss and grief. Yet, I'm merely one of
millions of fans of Dan's and my thoughts these days are with you, Jean and Dan's dear
family and friends.
May you find peace in the knowledge that Dan was a true gift of our Creator's voice that
I've always believed. May Dan's soul be celebrated into the heavens for his voice was a
gift to mankind. It's difficult to verbalize this loss. There has never been another artist, or person
that is not intimate to me that leaves me feeling so empty. Dan's music will carry me
all of my days and I will care for our earth to the end with Dan's wisdom in my heart.
May you be comforted in our love. He was an exceptional example of a life well lived &
a soul who gave so much to so many.
My heartfelt love ~ Sue
I discovered Dan's music in the late 70's and feel in love with his music.
It was so different than anyone else. He sang lyrics many guys wish they
could have thought of to say to the women in their lives. I cherish my Dan
Fogelberg music collection and plan to add to it. My wife and I caught him in
Houston once at The Summit in a theater setting show. I found out he was ill
shortly after hearing that he was coming to Houston. When I checked the
dates, I found out he was ill. Cancer of any kind is a word that strikes fear,
but from what I read it looks as if it brought out the best in Dan. As it can
in many. My little sister was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years
ago and my heart sank. I went to visit her in Dallas the day after her
surgery. I assisted her on her first walk down the hallway. I have never been
prouder of her in my life. Watching her, I wondered if I would be as strong.
Would I face this with the same courage she was. In the end, something will
get all of us. We have a friend that has been having issues with cancer and
he told me that instead of going "Why me?", he went "Why not me?". He said
we all will die of something, so "Why not me?". I had never thought of it in
that way.
Know that Dan's music will live forever. He made his mark and men and women
alike can't help but cherish his music. What a talent. What a loss. His
family is in my prayers and thoughts. ~

To the family and friends of Dan Fogelberg-
I was really saddened to hear of your loss of Dan. He was truly one of my
favorite singers and songwriters. When I drive through the woods of northern
Minnesota while on the job as campground enforcement officer I often like to
put one of his cassettes in the tape player in my pickup truck. He will be
very much missed here but at least we have his music and it will be always
with us. God bless you all.
Sincerely ~
Vance W Miller
The world stopped for several hours for me when I heard the news of Dan's passing. This momentous event is one of those that in 10 years you will still know where you were when you heard the sad news........sad for us, but a beautiful thing for Dan! I know you are up in heaven shining upon us. Your music has been such a huge part of my life - so much so that I brought my dying father in his last months of life to see you. He truly appreciated music and loved Dan almost as much as I did and do..You will forever be a part of this world. Your spirit will be kept alive through your amazing music. Jean, I've seen you back stage at concerts and believe that you are one of the luckiest women in the world to have been married to Dan and he must have been exceptionally lucky to have you. I love you forever and will continue to daily get my "Dan fix". I'll miss the anticipation of seeing you live again. I feel like I have lost a family
member. Much love and prayers for you in heaven and all your loved ones. ~
Mary F, Geneva, IL
May the God of all Comfort be with Dan's family, friends and fans. I pray
that all will remember the great man Dan is and will always be in our
hearts. Dan has left us so many beautiful songs that will live on. I am
thankful Dan informed everyone of his battle with cancer. Dan is two months
older than I, and I also have prostate cancer and had surgery four weeks
ago. Dan's courage has been a blessing to me as I join so many others
fighting cancer. I also pray all men will follow Dan's (and my) desire for
men to get tested and catch this disease early. ~ David Current, Lexington,
KY
I was so saddened and shocked to hear of Dan's passing. May his family
know what an inspiration his music was and still is. The world needs more
musicians like Dan. Whenever I listen to his music I feel at peace. May God
watch over your family during this difficult time. ~ Susan
To the Fogelberg family,
Music and the fondest of memories, that's what Dan Fogelberg has given to me. I hear the voice of an angel, a voice and talent that has been touched by God with his grace. A winter's early morning, tall pines dressed in white. The rising sun's light, sparkling like diamonds in the snow. I'll never forget the first time I heard his music. It was like a new beginning for me. I was young with love in my heart for a beautiful girl. Through the years his music has went with me, and Oh how I long for that winters morning sometimes. I close my eyes, put on that song and for a few fleeting moments I'm there. "Fly away my sweet bird over the land, take life for all the freedom you can".
God Bless his family and his dearest of friends, of which there are many I'm sure. ~
Phil Grimm
His music had the heart and soul of the Most High, our creator. I have never
been more saddened by an artist's death than that of the great Dan Fogelberg. I saw him live at the Beacon Theater (performing solo) a few years back. At the ticket window I found out that he was not performing with his band. I was so disappointed that I was considering asking for my money back. I asked the ticket agent how many tickets were sold and she said that it was practically sold out. To my absolute joy I kept the ticket and thought it was the best concert I had ever seen.
I guess I will have to wait to the New System to see him live once again.
Hope to see him in the resurrection.
Forever ~ Bob
I have listened and learned from Dan Fogelberg since 1976 when Joe Walsh found
him playing his guitar on a mountain somewhere out west. Thank you, Dan.
I was stunned and saddened to hear of Dan's passing. From the 70's in Boulder, his songs spoke to my heart and touched my soul more powerfully than any musician ever has. The world is blessed to have received the gift of his music. ~ Paula Barry Riebe, Doha, Qatar
We have lost the leader of OUR band... His music is his legacy.
To the Family and Friends of Dan: If I were to ever write an epitaph about Dan, I would say that Dan is not "gone", he has merely "gone ahead" to a place where we will all meet again. I only knew Dan through his music and lyrics, but I know that God has welcomed him with open arms for the inspiration that he brought to the world. I am certain that Dan showed strength of spirit during his struggle and now his suffering has turned to peace. Now his soulful and soothing voice sings with the angels in Heaven. He is truly with God for all eternity and His family will one day be at his side again. Dan, his family and friends are in my prayers. ~ Lisa Cameron
The news this week has created more than a few ripple affects. Friends I haven't heard
from in years have contacted me...they didn't call when their parents, spouses or even
children died, yet old college friends called to talk about how sad it was that Dan
Fogelberg died. 20 plus years ago we would listen to his music all night long and talk,
talk and talk. He bought us together then and now. He is an amazing artist and man.
Thank you for a life inspired and inspiring. ~
Denise Hayworth
Dear Jean and Fogelberg Family. My deepest condolences on your very sad
loss. Dan was a unique -- his gifts of poetry, lyrics, songwriting and
musicianship were rare and remarkable. My life was greatly enriched by his
sharing of his talents. Just think of all of the memories he helped create
for people through his recordings and live shows. I hope your personal
memories of and with him bring you comfort. May all the prayers and kind
thoughts people are sending your way lessen your sorrow.
I heard about his passing just after having watched a weather report and saw
that is was snowing in Maine. I instantly thought of his lyrics, "Lucky at
love, well, maybe so -- There's still alot of things you'll never know --
Like why each time that it begins to snow, you cry". My thoughts and
prayers are with you, and him. ~ Sally, California
Thank you for touching my life with your music and lyrics. "there's nothing much more to say, but be on your way".... rest in peace. You will always be with us in your music. ~ Sally
Deepest sympathy to Dan's family. His music is so great. I have listened to it
since I was a kid. What a great songwriter and storyteller he was! Forever lives
his memory in the greatest songs ever recorded!
I've been a fan of Dan Fogelberg since the early days of songs such as "Stars" and "Anyway I Love You." I had the pleasure of seeing him perform twice in
person, and the privilege of meeting him backstage after a concert in New
Haven in 1981. My husband and I also chose "Longer" as our wedding song. Dan was
an incredibly talented singer, songwriter and player of numerous musical
instruments. As a fellow musician I can thoroughly appreciate the vastness of his
gifts. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and the rest of his family, and
may he rest in peace.
Sincerely ~ Susan Fiorillo
We are so thankful that Dan chose to enrich our lives by sharing his wonderful gift of music. Our prayers are with Jean, Dan's family and friends. May God's comfort and peace be with you. ~ Gary & Lynne
I have to begin this message with a short background statement. Just a
month ago, I was in a record store and I found a Greatest Hits Dan
Fogelberg CD. Since this artist is a contemporary, and I hadn't heard
his music (regularly) in years, I bought the CD. Dan Fogelberg's music
brought back memories I hadn't thought of in years. To my surprise I
read in Monday's paper that Dan Fogelberg had passed away. As I gathered
information concerning the cause of his death, I was stunned to learn it
was from prostate cancer (he was so young). My thoughts were flooded
with my Father. My Father battled this disease for three years in the
early 1980's. His final relief was when he died on June 3, 1983. I am
52 years old and each and every year for the last 10 years I get a PSA
blood test and a digital exam. My last one was only a few weeks ago.
TO THE FOGELBERG FAMILY:
I cannot imagine the depths of your sorrow at this time. What I can say
is that Dan Fogelberg brought life to the music he wrote. He has
affected me personally in so many ways. I can tell you that I will put
each of you in my prayers and I imagine that Dan Fogelberg is leading a
band of Angels in Heavenly music. Dan Fogelberg's pain is no more. And
for that I am sure you are thankful. The pain is now with all of us to
endure without his physical presence. He will never die with me as long
as I have his music to play. God Bless you all. ~
William Snellgrove,
Tucson, Arizona
As a teenager in the seventy's, My friends and I listened to Dan's music all
of the time. He had a beautiful voice and the songs were so meaningful. I
never knew Dan, but feel like I lost a childhood friend. We will miss you
Dan. My condolences to the family. "Love when you can,
Cry when you have to.
Be who you must, that's a part of the plan" ~
Larry Cohen- Buffalo, New York.
My thoughts, heartfelt sympathies and prayers go out to the Fogelberg family
and his wife. I just heard on Monday, the 17th, about Mr. Fogelberg's
passing. I was terribly saddened and in utter disbelief at the news. I
remember seeing Dan for the first time in concert at Woolsey Hall on the college
campus of Yale in New Haven, Connecticut. It was 1975 I believe and I was 15 or
16, and a sophomore in high school. Fools Gold opened for him. He was slowly
becoming a name that people were beginning to notice. No one knew him well
then and he was just becoming "big". You could walk right up to the stage
and take pictures, which I still have. I thank my older brother who introduced
me to Mr. Fogelberg's music. We both "attempted" to play his music on our
own guitars. Not well, I might add, but we had fun. I continued to follow Mr.
Fogelberg's music over the years and attend many more of his concerts,
purchasing most of all his albums. God blessed him with much talent and
creativity. He will be missed by many who will cherish the memories he gave us through
his music. My prayers continue for his family and Jean. God Bless. ~
Maureen in Ohio
Hearing on Sunday of the death of Dan Fogelberg was very sad as he provided much of the soundtrack of my life. He was one of the great musicians and yes, poets of the late 20th century. His music was always a pleasure to listen to no matter how many times you heard it. Few could put natural surroundings to words any better such as Dan did in "The Reach", which should be Maine's official state song. It is hard to believe that there will be no more new Fogelberg music, which after the loss of Dan himself is a tough loss to take. At least his tremendous musical legacy of this "Leader of the Band" will continue to live in the hearts and minds of his fans "Ever On". ~
Steven Kimmelman,
East Windsor, NJ
I feel like I have lost a friend. I was so saddened to hear of Dan's
passing. He has been in my life since the beginning....1972, when I was in college.
His music was comforting, uplifting, consoling, gentle, hopeful, peaceful and
so much more. And to Dan's family, my condolences. He was a wonderful human
being. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Dan.... ~Janice C, Orlando,
Florida
Jean, my heart goes out to you and Dan's family in this sad time. We pray you
will have the strength to carry on and cherish the good memories you had. I took
his advice seriously about getting checked regularly. He will be missed and
people needed to know more of the Dan Fogelberg his fans knew of him. The radio
only played a very small part of the awesome poetic music that Dan had composed.
Back from Nether Lands, there was "Dancing Shoes", "Lessons Learned", "Scarecrow's
Dream", from The Wild Places - "Bones in the Sky" (just to name a few). Sincerely ~ Greg in Ct.
Jean....words cannot express the feelings of gratitude for your husband and
his music. He has been an inspiration to many, many worldwide. I pray that
you know of all of us who stand with you in sorrow during this time. God
bless you sweetheart. May your thoughts of loss be filled with wonderful
memories of a many that so many appreciated...for his music and for who he was as a
man. ~ Mark Gregston
I fell in love in Dan's music and my wife of 30 years about the same
time. 4 of his songs were played at our wedding. I tried in vain to
learn every one of his songs I could. I was brought to tears by his
music on so many occasions. Outside of the Beatles, he was probably the
biggest musical influence on my playing. I can't sing, but if I could, I
would sound like Dan. I will miss the Man. ~ Mark Clark
I have always loved his music. So passionate, so real. Dan may have left us physically, but his music & spirit will always be here with us.
Sympathy for his entire family, especially his wife Jean. Dan Fogelberg's music was part of my growing up and still am listening today. He was a man of talent, blessed with a special gift. May he rest now and sing with angels. ~
Susie, VA Beach
Thank you for the gift I know I never can repay...
When I needed someone or something to fill the voids in my life it was Dan's music which carried me through. My sympathies to The Fogelberg family for the loss of a wonderful human being to God's peace.
Dan Fogelberg will always be remembered as my circle of musical friends meet, strum and sing his beautiful songs. His music basically got me through my college days. I know his music will continue on as I now watch my guitar playing daughter listening and learning his sounds. Thank you. ~
Gina Burke,
Atlanta, GA
Dan,
You will be missed. So many great songs you wrote. My favorite is "Run for
the Roses."
Say "hi" to Barbaro for me.
I am so sad and shocked. Dan's music is timeless and has such depth, expressing the joy and mystery of life so beautifully. My sisters and I will be listening to his wonderful music when we see each other on Christmas - through our sadness we are grateful for how his music touched our lives and so happy to have his music forever. Thank you Dan for all you have given us. May God bless and comfort your family. ~ Lucia
My sympathies are with Dan's wife and family.
Dan's music has been with me for a long time, and has marked times in my
life. "Longer" was "our song" at our wedding. And I related with "Exiles"
when going thru my divorce. Furthermore, when I needed comfort, I could put
on any of Dan's albums, and I felt better. He was a truly gifted musician,
and songwriter, and will be dearly missed everywhere.
Godspeed, Dan ~
Rick
Oh my, oh my, I will miss Dan more than I can express. He once came into the 'Old Stage Stop' in Rollinsville, Co. Where I lived. Joni Mitchell was there too. We put up 'CLOSED' signs and an 'out of order' sign on the pay phone outside and just had a 'HOOT'. Rollinsville is up the canyon from Boulder, Co. He loved the mountains as do I. Rest in peace, dear Dan, the Leader of the Band. ~ Paula Jo Clark, now in Walsenburg, Co.
One of the music world's most wonderful voices and gifted artist now belongs
to heaven. I thank God that we have been left with his legacy to enjoy for
years to come. My thoughts have been with Dan's family all week.
I shall never forget his music. It was one of the beautiful things I recall
from my tumultuous teen-age years.
Without a doubt, Dan is now a wonderful new addition in God's heavenly
choir. We shall join him soon.
Shedding tears of loss. ~
Anne Bryant-Hamon
I'm deeply crushed by the news and feel as though the way I listen to music will
never be the same. My thoughts and prayers go out to all Dan's family and
friends. I make my living as a professional singer and Dan's music was my first
real inspiration to pursue my dream and I feel without his music I wouldn't be
who and where I am today. God bless. ~ Brad
A part of who I am was inspired by the words and music of Dan Fogelberg. Part of
my emergence into adulthood was altered by his messages. It is with great
sadness that I acknowledge his passing. Feels like an old friend died- maybe a
piece of the 20 year old I still hold onto. Go in peace, Dan. Light the trail.
Thanks for giving.
My sympathy goes out to the Fogelberg family and also to his friends and
fans who feel a terrible loss as well. His music and lyrics touched us
during our youth and inspired us to reflect on our own lives and
relationships when we otherwise may not have. I had the pleasure of
attending 2 of his concerts, the first at Alpine Valley, WI and the second "unplugged" in Rockford, IL. He was amazing to watch - a remarkable
musician and songwriter. Thank you, Dan for giving us The Innocent Age.
~ Gina Savonell
I was 15 when I first started listening to Dan. It was Home Free, and I knew that he had a completely unique voice, that he was not really a part of a 'trend' or 'style'. His music, really did go deep inside, and I carried him throughout my growing up years as I adopted each of his early albums up to age of innocence. I felt that his voice was also my voice in a way, I will never forget for a moment the opening chords to 'To the Morning'. I believe that song captures a sunrise perfectly. I remember the newspaper ad for his Carnegie Hall Concert (1979) but alas I called too late and it was sold out. The picture of that ad hung for a couple of years in my room.
I understand the loss must be incalculable for his loved ones, and I pray that the Lord will provide comfort and strength. May God bless you all.
Hi, When I heard the news I went right to the store to get any music I didn't
have. His illness was in my prayers as my husband and I were fighting
Multiple Myaloma. Now the two of them can enjoy his music as they swing on a star
somewhere out there. As much as I miss my husband, Chuck, it was time for
him to go. The alternative would have been far, far too painful. Joy to
you in knowing you did your best. The empty time is a desert, but the memories
are a blessing. ~ Mary Miller
I read the news of Dan's passing in the morning paper earlier this week. On my
way to
work, I popped "The First Christmas Morning" in my truck's CD player. "Snowfall" and "In
the Bleak Midwinter" amplified my sadness, but "Christ, the King" uplifted me. So yes, I
will lift my voice in a song of goodwill and I will lift my heart to the glorious season.
Yes, we are saddened by Dan's passing, but this song closes with the line "Bid all your
sorrows be still." I listened to that song about 3 or 4 times before I got to work and
each time, it was as if Dan was speaking to me personally, saying, "Don't feel sorrow for
my passing. Pass on my music to others and to generations to come."
When I arrived at the parking lot at work, I realized my eyes were a little bloodshot but
it wasn't because of sadness only. It was sadness mixed with joy - sadness because of
Dan's passing and joy because of all of this incredible music he wrote to which thousands
have been exposed. It's been a long road from "To the Morning" to "Earth Anthem," but
it's been a musical road paved with splendor, grace, beauty and dignity.
So Dan, thank you for "Stars" and "The Long Way" and "The Last Nail." Thank you for "False Faces" and "Paris Nocturne" and "Beggar's Game." Thank you for "Ghosts" and "Windows and Walls" and "Wolf Creek." Thank you for "Our Last Farewell" and "The Spirit
Trail" and "River of Souls." And thank you for "Isle Au Haut" and "Whispers in the Wind"
and "The First Christmas Morning." ~
Bob in Las Cruces, NM
Goodbye, gentle friend. I'll always be comforted by your sweet voice,
Dan.
Jean, my heart goes out to you. May you find comfort in your memories with Dan. Please know how much we all are with you.
With affection always ~
Barb
My brother and I loved Dan's music. I am so sorry to hear of his death. He will be missed. ~ Rachelle Kelley
Thank you for the music that touched our hearts and souls. Mr. Fogelberg's wife and family have our deepest sympathy. ~
Don and Laura in Richmond, VA
When I found out about your passing Dan, it literally was a physical blow! I am only 36 but i was raised on your hauntingly beautiful voice. I can't stop thinking about you and how Jean must feel. Tears just keep pouring down my face even when I'm feeding my beautiful daughter! No matter what I am doing your songs keep playing in my mind. "The River"...all of them are the greatest songs i have ever been blessed to hear. I feel like I knew you. I'm so glad Jean was in your life to take good care of you. God be with you Jean. I'm so sorry for your great loss. I love you Dan. I always will. ~ Inger - Virginia
My brother and I loved Dan's music. I am so sorry to hear of his death. He will be missed. ~ Rachelle Kelley
Dan your music has touched my life. I listen to it often and will continue to do so. You will be truly missed. ~ Craig Artzner
I drove around today listening to The Innocent Age, saddened by the loss of
Dan Fogelberg. His voice has been a consistent soothing source of comfort
and truth for the past 30 years of my life. I had the pleasure to see him
perform live about a dozen times throughout his career, and each was a joy
to experience. Though I never knew him personally, I sense I have lost a
cherished friend. His words and music connected powerfully and spoke to me
of beauty, peace and kindness, what is noble and good and hopeful about this
life we all are blessed to live. Rest in peace, Dan. You are a shining
light in my life and will be sorely missed. Nether Lands and your entire
catalog of music is a beautiful gift to the world, and will be gracefully
celebrated among my family the rest of my days. God bless Dan Fogelberg. ~
Randy Noe, Carlsbad, California.
There are no words to describe the deep sorrow that I feel in my heart in our
loss of Daniel Grayling Fogelberg this past Sunday morning. Dan, through his music, has been such an important part of my life for over 30 years. His music not only inspired me to learn to play guitar, sing, and write my own music, but also to focus more on my painting and drawing.
I know that I'm just one of thousands of devoted fans who can honestly say that Dan's music touched the very depths of our souls. He could say so eloquently, yet simply--and unlike no other--every thought, feeling...every single emotion...that we have felt in any situation. He was truly an Artist.
To Dan's wife, Jean, and his family, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and will continue to be in the days ahead. And, as difficult as this is for me as just one of his many, many fans, I cannot imagine the loss that Jean and Dan's families are feeling. But, they should know that we love them, and we know that Dan loved them very much. My husband and I were fortunate to see Dan in concert (my 8th time) at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS several years ago, and Jean was there, along with her parents, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. It was obvious that he was very happy and content and very much in love with Jean. That was such a special night, and we will never forget it.
And, I am sure of this--as beautiful as the music in Heaven must have been before, now that Dan is there, it will be even more beautiful!
I will never ever forget you, Dan. I love you so much! ~
Cindy Poole
I was totally shocked to hear the news of Dan's death. My brother
Michael
Murphy, knew Dan when he lived in Nashville & we were introduced one time, I
believe in a night club called "Mickey Finns." I have always loved Dan's
voice and have several of his albums that I still listen to. I lost Michael
in August 2003 at 52 to a massive heart attack. I am just sorry that Dan had
to suffer so. I know that it was a very difficult journey to endure. I am
saying prayers for family and friends and wife. Dan will not be forgotten. I
hope that men will follow his advice and get checked once a year like Dan
requested.
Love & peace ~
Sandy Murphy McBride
My deepest sympathy to Jean.
Dan's music is important to me because he wasn't afraid to show his vulnerability through
his music. Hearing his lyrics and music, you realized that he had gone through the same
heartaches, and moments of indecision, that we all felt from time to time, and you
realized that this genius of a lyricist and musician was making himself available
through it. I am truly saddened by his death and feel an emptiness that goes deep. I
would be a different person without Dan Fogelberg's music. ~ Foxglove; Maine
Just wanted to say how sad it made me feel when I heard Dan had left us. I
also grew up in the 70s listening to Dan's beautiful songs and ballads, he
just had such a way of connecting with people like few can. I was fortunate
enough to see him 3 times in concert with my wife and his concerts where magical
for all that attended them. My children grew up listening to his music and now
listen to him having heard my wife and me play his albums and songs out loud
to them when they were children. My son who was recently married had them
play "Longer" to his Wife, so his magic will continue to grow for
generations. What a legacy. My wife and I pray for strength to Jean and his family in
this sad time. We will always love your music and poetry set to words Dan. We
will always love you, Dan. ~ George and Sue from New York
Can't stop thinking about Dan. His words, his music and his goodness. He
will be missed by many people who loved him. ~
Melissa Downey
For most of my adult life, Dan help me through life changes, relationships, and the pain of my
father's death. A life ended too early, but well spent! The Leader of the Band.
Love ~ Sue
My heart and prayers go out to Jean and all of Dan's family. I will sadly miss never
again getting to see Dan perform his exquisitely crafted words and music. He was an
artist whose work I fell in love with in 1974. From there it only got better. No other
singer/songwriter ever put more of themselves into their music. His songs were made to
felt and visualized as much as they were to be listened to. Rest in peace, Dan. I'll be
waiting to hear you again on the other side. ~
Steve Sivek,
Baytown, TX
I am truly saddened- what a loss for us all. Dan will live forever in
his
music, and in that special place the music takes me to when I hear it. I
return to simpler times with my Dad when I hear Dan's music, and I can't
thank him enough. Thank you.
As a male nurse, I can't repeat Dan's message enough to get tested. It
really isn't as bad as you think, and it is generally a preventable disease
if caught early enough.
My condolences ~ Mike
Though I have no doubt that many, many are saying the same, Dan Fogelberg's music truly
shaped my life. No singer-songwriter touched me more deeply than Dan. His albums,
especially Souvenirs and Captured Angel, have remained on active duty in my collection
ever since I first owned them. I have countless memories accumulated from countless
hours of listening to Dan's music - on all of his albums in my possession.
Since hearing of Dan's death, there is an empty place in my heart that I know will never
be filled. I think there's something right about that. When someone has contributed so
much to a life as Dan has to mine, the loss is palpable, but the memories are made all
the richer.
For those who grieve, and I'm sure there are many, God bless you.
With heavy, but grateful heart ~
Brent Harris
My husband and I are very sad about the passing of our favorite singer Mr. Fogelberg. My most favorite song is "Leader of the Band". We are both Filipinos and I always sing that during parties while my husband plays the guitar. We were fortunate to have watched him in a concert about 13-14 years ago. He will be missed dearly.
Thank you for touching us with your beautiful music.
Dear Jean, even though I can't play an instrument, I am a lover of concerts
and a great listener of music. I did not have the chance to see Dan perform
but his music will carry his message forever. My condolences to you and
prayers ~ Alfonso
Such sorrow, so incredibly sad. Dan's wonderful songs have always been my favorites, and
I grieve over the silence of that achingly beautiful, angelic voice that I loved above
all others since I first heard it on his first album. His music has been a part of my
life ever since that time, and I will always remember him through his music. And all you
men out there, listen to Dan's words about prostate cancer testing. My father died of it
at 73. My two brothers were both diagnosed at 53, like Dan. It's not always an old
man's disease. Get tested, find it early. ~

I can't express enough how sad I was to hear the news last Sunday. Dan's music brings back so many good memories - and was an accompaniment to me when I moved to Colorado in 81'. I have seen him live more than any other artist - including two very memorable performances at Red Rocks. My thoughts go out to his wife and family - he brought us so much joy! ~ Laura
I would think about Dan often, and I would wonder how he was doing. A couple
of weeks ago, I started visiting his web site more often to see if there was
a change in his posted message. Then, on Monday (12/17/07), I heard the news
of his passing. I was heart broken. My husband and I loved his beautiful
music. It was hard for me to pick a favorite song. We send our deepest
condolences to his wife and family. ~

I have been a fan of Dan's music since the late 70's. I just found out by
accident of Dan's passing and his battle with cancer. "Leader of the Band"
holds a special place in my heart as it is one of songs I loved to play as a
young DJ on my high school radio station. My deepest sympathy goes out to Dan's wife and family first and foremost. And to all of Dan's fans new and old. As
long as the music plays Dan shall live on forever in our hearts and our
souls. Godspeed Dan and thank you for your words that touched my life in a very
special way.
Your poetry is such a big part of my life. Your words will always stay with me..I fell
in love listening to you. You will be forever missed. ~ jill
Dan's legacy of music will forever live on. His lyrics weren't just
beautiful; they told a story that touched my heart. To Jean, you had a
gift of the love of a man who was a poet and a storyteller. He has been
released from his suffering and the world is richer for having heard the
beauty of his music. God bless. ~

Dan's music has always played a prevalent part in the soundtrack of my
life's journey. Dan, thank you so much for the gift! ~ Kathleen
Thank you, Daniel Grayling Fogelberg, for your music and your spirit that have touched many. Your music soothed my soul during tough times growing up in the 70's. Earth is a little dimmer without you, but they are rejoicing in Heaven. Though you will be greatly missed, your music will live forever. I wish your wife, Jean, and your family all the best. ~ Carmen
In the Orthodox Christian Church we sing: "Memory Eternal!" for our beloved Dan Fogelberg of Peoria, IL. May his memory be ever eternal not only in the hearts of his Fans, but most importantly in the Heart of God and in His Heavenly Kingdom.
From a fellow Woodruff High School Graduate ... Your first Peoria Concert at the Glen Oak Park Amphitheatre after the success of "Part of the Plan" was my first concert. I was always proud to claim Dan as a fellow alumni. I pray that Dan will rest eternally in our Lord's Kingdom where all of His Blessed Saints do repose; and I ask that God will grant His Peace (John 14:27) & Comfort to Dan's wife and his Family! Love in Christ ~ Very Rev. Fr. Donald E. Shadid, Woodruff High School Class of 1977 - Peoria, IL
Our family was devastated to hear the news of Dan's passing. His was a
gentle voice in a world filled with so much noise. We'll keep his music
playing in our house and his memory alive. Our thoughts and prayers are
with the Fogelberg family as they cope with his passing. Much love ~ The
Rosens
Thank you.
My brother Tim and I saw him in Costa Mesa,CA back in the 90's. It was such
a GREAT show we couldn't believe it! Wishing that we'd make that moment
last forever! "Sketches"...My favorite song of his. "Why did you leave at all?"
We will miss you Dan but will play your music until WE die!
Love you...and my condolences to your family. ~

There are truly no words to express my sadness of Dan's passing. He took all the words with him. While I have known of his illness, his death somehow feels so unreal. l have loved Dan's music since I was in high school and it has continued to touch me and speak to my soul throughout the years. What a beautiful man he was. We are blessed to have "known" him. May his family find peace in their memories. ~
Stacey Peyer, Los Angeles
My thoughts and prayers go to his mother, brothers and
wife. I have fond memories of listening to his
wonderful music and getting to play his music as it
was arranged for band by "the leader of the band". He
will be missed by many. Take care. ~ Joan
Thanks for the many years of great music and memories Dan provided myself and his legion of fans worldwide. ~

Dan, I was a sophomore in college during the early 70's when I first heard
the "Home Free" album. Your soothing melodies, the resonance of your clear
acoustic musicianship and your poignant lyrics instills within me a profound sense
of serenity. I have been an avid fan for over 30 years. Thank you for sharing
your wonderful talent and thank you for the poetic words that will forever
remain influential. Peace to you my friend. Also, to your wife Jean and family,
during this most difficult time. ~ kth
I am deeply saddened at the passing of Dan. His voice was like that of an angel. His music touched the lives of so many and I know he will live on forever through that. I am glad his suffering is no longer and that he can finally find eternal rest and peace. My deepest sympathies to his wife Jean and all other family members. Rest in peace Dan! You will truly be missed!
Where do I begin? First to Jean and his family, my deepest sympathy. I got
online Sunday night and read the news and was shocked, heartbroken and yes
couldn't stop crying and I still can't. I still can't believe he is gone! I had a
cousin that first introduced me to his music when I was in high school in the
70's. I bought the Home Free album I still have it. It is still one of my
favorites. I later bought it when CD's came out. I love all of his work, but
the Home Free album remained my favorite. It's just so peaceful and the
melodies are wonderful. Please don't stop putting out his works so that other
generations can know him. I think that's what it is about his work you feel the
power of his songs so deeply, that you feel that you know the man. We as fans
have lost a wonderful artist, musician and the world lost a wonderful human
being. Dan thanks for being you, for giving us your wonderful music. The world
was a better place with you in it. Your battle is over. ~ Renee', Mississippi
I will die by a river as it rolls away
Bury me in the nighttime...do not waste the day
High above the waters that roll on to the sea
All the angels in heaven will laugh at me
They will laugh at me....they will laugh at me
They will laugh at me
My life was naught but a river rolling through my brain
Made of so many teardrops...made of so much pain.
"The River"...Home Free
My deepest condolences on the loss of a great man and artist. His amazing
words meant so much to me and to others. His beautiful song "Longer" was the song I shared as "our song" with my high school sweetheart. When in college, if I had had a difficult day or was sad about something, I would listen to "Hard to Say" over and over again. I am a piano player, and spent many years working on learning some of Dan's beautiful songs for the piano...my favorites were "Nexus" and "Run for the Roses". I am so sad that he had to leave us while so young. I have no doubt that he is changing more lives wherever he is. ~ Sharon in Connecticut
I was in shock when I heard the news of Dan's passing. Dan, you fought a long battle and there are many Cries in the Forest today. Your voice was truly the Power of Gold. I remember hearing Dan at Red Rocks twice and how incredible. Those memories will last forever. Thank you for your gift of music. Jean, my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours and Dan's families. God's Peace. Peace ~ Todd Grivetti, Longmont, CO.
About six months ago the songwriter of Windows and Walls and The Innocent Age: Dan Fogelberg, came to my memory has one of the good singers of my teenage. At this time, I put his name to my list of artists to look at, the next time I'd go to a music store. Time is going fast and I didn't take the time... Last Sunday morning, December 16th, my husband and I were coming back home from a family weekend. It was snow tempest here in Quebec, so we stopped to take a coffee and gasoline on our way home. When I went to pay the gasoline, there was a rack of different music near the cashier. One cd took my attention: The Best of Dan Fogelberg, the artist that I was thinking about a few months ago. I bought the cd and put it immediately in my car remembering some great musical souvenirs. I'm listening it since this time. Talking about him to my friends I decided to make a search on internet this morning, and I found out the news. For me Dan Fogelberg is coming back to my life since last Sunday, and I want to tell that his music is making him alive more than ever. My sympathy to his wife and family. My thoughts are with you. ~ Josee Drouin from Quebec City.
My formative years as a musician were blessed to have encountered the work
of Dan. My high school friends and I cut our teeth on the intricate and
elegant music that seemed to speak directly to our souls. Music that was
haunting and raucous, courageous and intimate, music that changed and
challenged us in a multitude of ways. His arrangements pushed us as
musicians, his words told the story of our loves and lives, and our joy was
measured through his performances.
To this day, one of my most memorable musical moments I've ever had (and
I've had thousands) was seeing Dan (along with Fool's Gold) at the then
Santa Monica Civic auditorium in the 70's. Oh, the harmonies and music
struck the deepest chord with me and mine like a rite of passage as a
musician and music lover.
Time has passed and many notes under the bridge, I still reflect in
reverence for what he gave to me. Those albums were so worn out from
dropping the needle time and time again to figure out exactly how he played
a song harkens me back to a time lost.
Thank you, Dan. You gave me so much and although we never met, I know that
you were my brother.
My condolences to your family and loved ones. My heart grieves with you and
my prayers are those of comfort and joyful remembrances.
Peace ~
Brian
Dan...May you rejoice in the heaven's with those loved ones gone before, sing onto the highest....YOUR legend will live on for us down here and will simply have to do until we all meet again. To Jean and family, my deepest sympathies are extended to you today and always. ~ Gayla-IL
My first guitar song book was Neither Lands and I spent countless hours
learning every song and tried to do them justice. I have been a fan of
you and your music since the 70's. You will be in my prayers and I am
thankful for all that you have shared with the world. ~
Joel Booker
My sister Toni and I have been fans since the early 70s
we traveled together many times during those years to
see Dan and every event was a love letter to us and all
those who were there. The last time we saw him was a few years ago
at a winery in Napa California.... just Dan and his
piano. It's a memory I know my sister and I will remember
forever.... God bless you, Dan.
Mr. Fogelberg will always be my favorite singer / songwriter. I am so disappointed that I never had the opportunity to see his show in person. My father committed suicide when I was nine years old and I felt as though Mr. Fogelberg had written the song "Leader of the Band" for him. It still brings a tear to my eye.
Peace to all and may God Bless ~
Kelley David Cole
I am incredibly sad. I send my condolences to his family, and to us, his
fans. RIP Dan.
Peace and Love
~ Caroline
It has been a true privilege to know your music. It was a true privilege to meet you in Aspen (I still talk about it and over 25 years have passed). It is a true privilege to perform your music in my own band. Your influence is in every song I write. Thank you! ~ Brian
"Longer" was our wedding song in Nov. 1981. You and your words live within
us.
Blessings ~

Godspeed and rest in peace, Dan. I never met you but your music has
touched and inspired me. My condolences to Dan's wife, family and
friends on your immense loss. ~ Mike Da Silva - Manila, Philippines
Thank you to all of the Fogelberg family! Without the support of a man's family and friends, he can accomplish nothing. You have all helped the
joy and talent of Dan spread all over the world. May God's peace be with all of you!
~ Garrett
We will miss you and your great songs will live forever. ~ DJ Basil Philistin
I have only cried at one concert in my lifetime, Dan Fogelberg. His
lyrics were unmatched. I think amongst them that "Run For The Roses"
is some of the most beautiful poetry ever written. "It's the chance
of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance." Thank you Dan. You dominated
my IPod and moved my soul. ~
Jeff Detrow
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dan and his family. We feel that we have lost a good friend. My wife and I have been huge fans since the mid-70s and Dan's CDs are an active part of our music collection. When we celebrated our 20th anniversary 4 years ago, we were in the 2nd row of the Murat Theater here in Indianapolis. Dan never sounded better (we've seen him several other times over the years). Dan's music truly touched our lives and from the thousands of emails from around the world, he obviously touched several generations of music lovers. Dan, thank you for your gift of music and sharing your talent and heart with the world. God Bless you and your family. You will be missed but never forgotten. ~ Dave and Terry Witzerman
This morning I turned on "The Innocent Age" and throughout the day listened to it from beginning to end. Enjoying it so much I then moved on to "Phoenix", then "Souvenirs". Just an hour ago I learned from a friend that Dan had passed and I am deeply saddened. His music was an inspiration to us all and will always be an integral part of the soundtrack of my life. My heartfelt prayers go out to his family.
My prayers are with the family. Dan provided the soundtrack for my life for over 25 years, from the time my sister lent me her copy of Souvenirs in 1974. (I don't think I ever returned it.). "I thank you for your music and your stories of the road...". God bless you Dan. Rest in peace. ~
Jay
Dan, your music gives me peace of mind when I need it most. I will
appreciate your gifts for as long as I live. Thanks and may you rest in
peace. ~Tony
What a sad week...Like many others, Dan's music was the soundtrack to my life
from when I was 12 (and I'm now 42). His music always took me places - really making me think and feel. Wishing I could create music, his talent stunned and amazed me. When I attended the art school at the University of Illinois, I had some of the same professors as he did and felt so special! In drawing class we took turns playing our favorite music, so of course, I always brought Dan Fogelberg. The beauty of his music always brought out the best in me. I feel like a big part of my life is gone with his passing, but then he brought so much to my life with his music. Thank you for everything. May you rest in peace and may your family's grief heal with each passing day. ~ Dory Dickman, Jersey City, NJ
I never met Dan Fogelberg, however I spent many youthful nights listening to his
records and searching the album covers
for lyrics I hoped that someone would write for me some day.
His poetry drew tears to my eyes and memories to my mind. I lived my youth through his music and somehow knew that I wasn't alone in this world. There was a man who had drawn the same experiences in his life and knew how to put them on Paper.
No one will every fill his shoes. He was every woman's dream of a man, and devoted to his one true love.
We were all blessed to have experienced his music.
Sincerely Touched ~
Karla Yuncker
Dan's music has been part of my life since 1975 when I learned to play and sing
"There's a place in the world for a gambler". I can't tell you how many times I have performed his songs over the years. I played and sang "Longer" to my wife during our wedding. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. His music is and will be a blessing to all who listen. It truly has touched my soul. Thank you Dan for sharing your gift, you will live on for a long, long time. Sincerely ~ Ron Moore, Orangevale, Ca.
Dear Jean, God we loved him. His song "Same Old Lang Syne" is fitting tribute to him
his song is popular at this Christmas time. As he passes during this time the
words will always ring out ...
"the snow turned into rain." - a line I'll remember him for always. God I still can't believe it. We are gonna miss him so badly. God bless him. He lives with us forever. ~ Joe Marzano
My God - I can't believe Dan is gone. He was a constant in my life in college in the early '80's. I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dan and sympathy to his family for giving us a person that made such an incredible influence on our lives. God's blessings on all of you who survived him - may the wonderful spirit of his music make you glad to have known him. With love ~ Alan & Maddy Thal
For you Dan,
My heartfelt thanks for the music that you wrote and sang. Your voice will be missed by me forever. I was a child of the 70's and learned of your music through an affair with
a ballerina whose husband did not take kindly to it.
Somehow, your music gave us the strength to fight against all odds to our affair and it
will forever be etched in my memory. To you and your great gift, I thank you from the
bottom of my heart. I continue today to live with memories of your words and hope to
live up to your integrity.
Forever yours Dan ~
David Tonooka-Chong
My deepest sympathy to the Fogelberg family in the loss of a very talented
and gifted artist who spoke for many of us through the years. As an adolescent,
I loved Dan's music and had all of his albums. The passage of time has not
dimmed the beauty of his music nor the poignancy of his messages.
My father, who recently entered a nursing home, was a professional colleague
who liked and respected Larry Fogelberg, given that they both were band
directors who hailed from Central Illinois. I have thought often of the lyrics to
the song, "Leader of the Band" as I have observed my father's failing health
over the last few years. That song has always been special to me and continues
to touch me today.
Thanks to Dan Fogelberg for sharing his very special gift with so many. My
thoughts and prayers are with his family and with him. ~
Nancy Allan Koets,
Minneapolis, MN
To the friends, and family of Mr Fogelberg - We wish to send our sincere condolences. My husband told me of his passing as he heard it on the evening news, saying that if it weren't for me, he would probably wouldn't have heard his music. I had chosen the song "Longer" for our wedding, fifteen years ago. His music connected our hearts then, and will continue to connect hearts for years to come. Sincerely ~ Ronnie and Dennis Faucher
Dan, your music will live on in our hearts forever! I've been a big fan
of yours since the 70's. Your music, the words you sing...just
beautiful! Thank you for everything and rest in peace. God Bless You!
Very Respectfully ~
Jojo Cinco
On this cold 40 below zero night in Fairbanks, Alaska, a new star has been added to the deep darkness of our winter sky. Dan, may your spirit continue to shine and enlighten. Thank you for many of my life's adventures forever entwined in your songs. Love and peace to the Fogelberg family. ~ Stacy
I thought i write in to express my condolences to the family of Dan, for his
passing. He
brought up a generation of people all over the world with his music, and I can't thank
him enough for the inspiring song in 'Leader of the Band'. It remains a significant part
of my growing up. He will be fondly remembered, and missed, even by many of us here in Singapore.
RIP Dan. May you share your endless music with wherever you are.
Dear Dan,
I first heard your music in 1976 (it took me a while to get hip) when I was painting the house where I was living on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. The album was Souvenirs, and I wore that LP out. The words from "Part of the Plan" have always stayed with me. Later, after I started playing guitar, I bought the songbook with all your music and lyrics. Although I never did your songs true justice, they were an inspiration.
Now you have gone on and are waiting, while we look for...as you say....all of the answers you seek can be found by dreams that you dream on the way.
Although gone, your spirit will live forever through your music. Thanks
for
leaving such an incredible legacy behind. ~ Marty McDermott (bass player, and D.F. fan)
My deepest condolences to Dan and family I have been a lover of Dan's work
for a long time and will treasure the music for a long time to come. Dan
will be with us forever in his music. I will always remember his song "Longer" as we had it as our bridal waltz. A brilliant man taken way too early.
Yours truly ~ John Webster,
Cranbourne Victoria Australia
The world has lost one of the true giants of poem and song. His music will
